Oregon Nonprofit Supports Some Bend Homeowners Fighting Plans to Pipe Their Canal

"Restore Oregon" heard from many of these homeowners seeking help on what to do.

The group that helps save historic places supports their effort to keep the canal as is and not pipe it for historic reasons.

It was built in the early 1900's and Restore Oregon's Executive Director Peggy Moretti says they recently wrote an article in support of preserving the canal.

"The goal isn't to freeze them in amber or stop progress. Often these things there is a way to preserve some piece or structure or resources and be able to keep evidence of that past and what it represents.  And there's a beauty aspect, the community benefits from the aesthetics of it."

The Central Oregon Irrigation District wants to pipe the canal north of Bend to reduce water leaks and to create hydroelectric power for its plant.

The Deschutes County Commissioners are expected to decide this month whether to approve the piping project.
