Bend Gas Tax Decision Expected This Week

BEND, OR -- The Bend City Council will decide this week whether to put a local gas tax on the November ballot. The group Bend 2030 has advocated Councilors wait to allow for more public input. Erin Foote Marlowe with Bend 2030 tells KBND Monday afternoon's meeting at city hall. "If the minimum thing we come away with is a really good understanding of different options, I think it's valuable information as you consider whether to put the gas tax on the ballot."

Bend City Councilors are considering a local gas tax to help fund deferred street improvements. Victor Martinez, Board Chair of Bend 2030 has warned against "rushing" forward with the issue. "We are concerned there is going to be strong opposition to this, and if we partner up with the opposition to work on a comprehensive plan - we won't have a strong effort without engaging the opposition to work closely with them."

The Council is expected to make a final decision on August 5, whether to put the issue on the November ballot.
