BEND, OR -- Oregon State University made its planned expansion in Bend official Friday. The Board of Trustees voted to authorize the purchase of a 72-acre former landfill from Deschutes County.
The site, along with a former pumice mine the university already owns, will take the Bend campus to a total of 128 acres, which officials say will allow the school to enroll between 3,000 and 5,000 students.
OSU-Cascades Vice President Becky Johnson says remediated landfill soil will be used to help fill the pumice mine site. In a statement issued Friday, Johnson said, "This will benefit Central Oregon, the community, the economy and students thanks to the collaboration of Deschutes County commissioners and staff."
