Bend-La Pine Schools announced Monday Silver Rail Elementary will re-open November 12th. Crews are wrapping up repairs on the building, following last month’s shooting, where three special education students and their teacher were killed. That work is expected to be done by next Monday. Teachers and staff will be allowed back in on Monday and Tuesday to prepare classrooms. Silver Rail families will be allowed to walk through on Tuesday and Wednesday, before students return for a half day on Thursday. Friday, November 13th, will be the first full school day. A school resource officer is assigned to the campus through the end of the school year and additional staff will be on hand for the transition back to a regular routine.

The Bend teacher credited with helping stop the deadly shooting at Silver Rail has now come forward. Police say Certified Learning Specialist Cassidy Schutz threw her cell phone at the suspect, then tackled him and fought to take the firearm away. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said her actions almost certainly prevented more bloodshed. Schutz, who was not injured, released a statement saying there are no words to describe the depth of her sadness. She says her focus remains on the families of those killed, the injured, and everyone who was there. Schutz is asking for privacy as the Bend community heals.
