High School football started over the weekend. 

Caldera overpowerd visiting Beaverton 26 to 6.

Mountain View won their contest over visiting West Albany, 13 to 10.

Remond Panthers traveled to LaGrande and were beat 30 to 13.

Ridgeview traveled to Lebanon and thumped the Warriors 35 to 21.

Bend and Summit travel next week for non-league openers.

BEAVERS

Oregon State has its starting quarterback. Head coach JaMarcus Shephard confirmed that Braden Atkinson has won a tight fall-camp competition, saying the numbers gave Atkinson a slight edge. Shephard called the transfer a “total football junkie,” praising his focus on learning the offense over everything else. The Beavers now turn toward Shephard’s head coaching debut, Saturday at Houston, with kickoff set for 9 a.m.

OREGON DUCKS

Coach Dan Lanning says Oregon’s preseason work is showing signs of a team ready to lead from within. Lanning pointed to a growing player-led identity throughout fall camp, saying that leadership has become more visible with each practice. His overall takeaway: Oregon has a hungry group, working hard, and building toward the season with purpose.  Oregon hosts Boise State Saturday. Pre-game at 10:30; kickoff at 12:30 here on KBND!

MARINERS

The Seattle Mariners hit another low point Sunday, falling 7-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays and getting swept over the weekend. The loss comes at a critical time, with less than a month left to turn things around. The Mariners remain in the AL West mix, but missed a chance to gain ground in a division still very much up for grabs.

Defensive Coordinator Mike Macintyre spoke to the press after practice yesterday about preparing for their first opponent.

“You're looking at Houston, just like Houston's looking at us and, and different things, and, so we're working on, you know, Houston's offense and looking at their players that are coming back, and they've got a lot of excellent players coming back.”

OSU’s season opens at Houston next Saturday.

NFL:

Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams will continue his career in Seattle.  Big Cat agreed to a three-year 90-million-dollar extension.  Williams was entering the last year of his contract after helping the Hawks win Super Bowl 60.

Seattle has a preseason game at Kansas City today with a 5pm kickoff.

WNBA:

The Fire look to snap a three-game losing streak when they play the Atlanta Dream tonight on the road. Portland will then host the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday before the break for the FIBA World Cup.

LOCAL:

The Bend Beer Run is tomorrow. The 5K goes through Drake Park and downtown Bend with four craft beer stops featuring local breweries along the race course.

Offensive Coordinator Mitch Dahlen spoke to the press after practice yesterday about why Sophomore Braiden Atkinson was picked to be starting quarterback.

“What he does well is he takes care of the ball and the ball just moves. It's kind of what I talked about before is he is able to move the ball down the field and we've tracked every single drive with those free call periods and he's been awesome.”

In Eugene,

The Ducks have a day off practice today, before getting into a regular season practice schedule starting tomorrow and this weekend.

Head Coach Dan Lanning said during his media availability yesterday the team’s leaders have set an example during training camp.

“The continuity you get from going to practice every single day, getting out there, I mean, you become a better team each and every day, and then there's been really good back and forth, right? Whether it's offense, defense, special teams, I think in all those areas, we're proven in a lot of situations that we're making sure we expose our players to, but overall, I think we have a group that's hungry and, and working really hard.”

The Big Ten is taking a stand against a potential wave of NFL players who want to return to school to play football. Conference leaders voted today to block anyone who didn't withdraw from the NFL Draft, appeared on a roster or signed a pro contract from playing. The league drafted the rule after a Louisiana judge cleared the way for at least two players who were in NFL training camps to sign with LSU for a fifth season under the NCAA's "five in five" eligibility model.

NFL:

The sale of the Seattle Seahawks has cleared a major hurdle.  Brad Ford reports.

“NFL owners are approving the record sale of the Seattle Seahawks to an ownership group led by the Khosla family.  Multiple reports say league owners unanimously approved the deal Wednesday during a special meeting in Atlanta.  The decision clears the final major hurdle before the sale can be completed.  The Khosla group agreed in July to buy the team from the Paul G. Allen Estate for an NFL-record deal worth more than nine-point-six-billion-dollars.  The sale is expected to become final within the next week, ending 29 years of Allen family ownership.”

Seattle has a preseason game at Kansas City tomorrow.

MLS:

The Portland Timbers have agreed to transfer forward Kevin Kelsey to a professional football team in Glasgow, Scotland. A club source said Kelsey will join the Rangers in a club record thirteen-million-dollar transfer. Kelsey joined the Timbers in January of 2025 for a fee just under six-million-dollars. He has scored sixteen goals in 43 MLS appearances and leads the Timbers with nine goals this season.

The final week of Fall Camp.

In Eugene, the Ducks started their morning practice routine yesterday, which they’ll continue the rest of the season.

It was Defensive coordinator Chris Hampton’s turn to talk to the media yesterday.

Hampton was asked about how the defense is competing with the offense.

“You know, I think we had the better of them one day. They've had the better of us some days. I think it's been a lot of good back and forth. I think we've made a lot of strides; we still got a ways to go, before September 5th.”

In Corvallis, Head Coach JaMarcus Shephard addressed the selection of Braden Atkinson as the team’s starting quarterback.

“When I talk about Braden, that does not mean that I have an indictment on anybody else, and how they played. It is just really truly highlighting him as a person and it does not mean that the other players did not showcase the things that were necessary as well to be the starting quarterback, Braden just rose to the top.”

The Seahawks put safety Bud Clark and offensive lineman Mason Richman on injured reserve yesterday, after they both suffered injuries in Sunday’s game.  Seattle signed three players to replace Clark, Mason, and former OSU running back Anthony Hankerson, including former Oregon safety Tysheem Johnson.

In Corvallis, the quarterback battle is over. Braden Atkinson will be the starter when OSU’s season opens at Houston September 5^th.

Atkinson is a transfer from Mercer University where he won the Jerry Rice Award for top freshman last season.

Atkinson beat out returning starter Maalik Murphy and another transfer Brady Jones for the job.

In Eugene,

The Ducks offense was outplayed by the defense in Saturday’s scrimmage but the offensive coordinator Drew Mehringher said after yesterday’s practice the squad was able to re-set and refocus, and come out much sharper.

NBA:

The Trail Blazers announced their 2026 Rip City Rally Locations which includes stops in Bend, Prineville and Madras next month.

On the court some bad news as guard Shaedon Sharpe will reportedly miss up to six months after tearing the meniscus in his right knee.

Sharpe is expected to have surgery this week.

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Fire visit the Dallas Wings tonight, while the Storm host Toronto tomorrow. Portland sits at 15-and-22 on the season, currently six-and-a-half games behind Dallas for the eighth and final playoff spot. Seattle is just 7-and-31.

NFL:

The Seahawks waived former Oregon State running back Anthony Hankerson.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

In Eugene,

DB Brandon Finney Jr., LB Matayo Uiagalelei and DL A'Mauri Washington are on the preseason watch list for the 2026 Chuck Bednarik Award, which is presented to the outstanding defensive player in college football.

Finney and Washington were previously on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which also recognizes the nation's top defensive player, and they were both named preseason all-Americans.

The Ducks held one last Fall Camp scrimmage Saturday.

Coach Dan Lanning said the Defense got the better of the Offense, and he saw many bright spots from all sides of the ball.

“You know, there's some takeaways. The kicking game was much better today. Rocco did a good job. He's 4 for 4. Gage did a good job. We had good kick locations from our punters. But overall, really good compete and something to build off of once we watched the film.”

Lanning’s comments on the ability for 5^th year players coming back from the NFL to play again in college drew national media coverage after he called it ‘unfair to the sport”.

Friday’s court ruling blocking 5^th year players means defensive back Jaheim Patterson and Center Van Wells would not be eligible.

The Beavers held their final camp scrimmage which served as another audition for who will be starting quarterback.

The Seahawks placed receiver Jake Bobo on injured reserve Saturday, the result of the knee injury he suffered in Friday's joint practice with the Titans. He’ll miss the entire season.

Seattle started their 2^nd string offense and scored on their first two possessions.

WNBA:

Quarterback Dante Moore is up the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award.

Wide receiver Iverson Hooks and tight end Jamari Johnson are on the Biletnikoff watchlist for most outstanding receiver.

Four Ducks are on the pre-season Associated Press All American Teams. Moore is first team Quarterback. A’Mauri Washington is first team Edge, Koi Perich, first team DB, and Brandon Finney Jr is second team DB.

In Corvallis, Oregon State defensive coordinator Mike Macintyre said after practice yesterday he wants to see how his squad understands their assignments during this Saturday’s scrimmage.

“I feel like they have a good knowledge, a really good knowledge of what we're doing, because they're, the reason I say that is they're asking great questions. You know, it's not just like I'm talking and it's numb, and it's not, I'm talking and then they make, what about this? What about that? What about that? So, it shows me they're kind of going to the next level. Just seeing that Saturday and then, keep improving on our tackling.”

Former Oregon Ducks wide receiver Traeshon Holden is searching for his next opportunity. The Dallas Cowboys waived Holden after signing outside linebacker Von Miller. In Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks, Holden competed for a spot in the receiver room with CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, KaVontae Turpin, Ryan Flournoy and Camden Brown, among others. He didn't help his case when he muffed a punt. Holden was an undrafted free agent out of Oregon in 2025 and spent the entire season on the practice squad.

WNBA

In WNBA action, the Fire visit Toronto tomorrow, while the Storm are back in action on Sunday when they visit Dallas. Portland sits ninth in the WNBA standings at 15-and-20 on the season. Seattle is last at 7-and-30.

Alright. I ask our guys often, alright, ‘do you have a practice mindset right now, a game day mindset or a daily mindset?’ And it should be a daily mindset every single day.

Oregon football is starting with its highest preseason ranking ever. The Ducks came in at number two in the Associated Press Top 25, matching their number two debut in the preseason Coaches Poll.

Oregon’s previous best preseason AP ranking was third, reached four times, including in 2024.

The Ducks have now opened in the AP top ten for three straight seasons, their longest such run since 2011 through 2015, and have appeared in the preseason top 25 for nine consecutive years.

Also yesterday quarterback Dante Moore was named to the preseason watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. 
Moore was previously named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which also goes to the nation's most outstanding player.

NFL:

Seahawks’ head coach Mike Macdonald spoke to the media after practice yesterday about their game against Dallas Saturday.

Macdonald says the coaching operation needs work and the team needs to finish plays better.

Seattle also signed former Oregon State running back Anthony Hankerson.

The value of NFL franchises continues to surge.  Sportico reports the average team is worth 9.34-billion-dollars, an increase of more than 31-percent over last year.  It's the largest one-year increase in at least a decade.  The Dallas Cowboys lead the way at 15.5-billion-dollars.  The Seahawks rank 12th on the list at more than 9.6-billion.

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Fire will visit Toronto on Friday, while the Storm are off until Sunday when they travel to face Dallas. Portland sits ninth in the WNBA standings at 15-and-20 on the season. Seattle is last at 7-and-30.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

In Eugene, the Ducks scrimmaged Saturday.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning liked he saw on the field.

ACT “Good scrimmage. The thing you're always hoping for as a coach in this moment is you want to test physicality, the ability to tackle and break tackles, but you also want to walk away healthy and we were able to do that today. Some overall really good reps from both sides of the ball got to do a better job when it comes to ball security at times; got to clean up some special teams play, make sure we're able to get the kicks that we need to be able to get. But overall, a solid performance, got to go back and evaluate the film.”

Lanning speaking to the media after the session at Autzen Stadium said there is room for improvement, however.

In Corvallis, 5^th year seniors Jaheim Patterson and Van Wells both participated in practice Friday, according to reports. Patterson, a safety, and Wells, a center are waiting on a court decision on whether the players who started their college careers in 2022 can play this season.

The NCAA is cracking down on player eligibility rules with an appeals court potentially making a ruling this week.

NBA:

Reports say the Trail Blazers and City of Portland will meet today to discuss a new lease agreement for the Moda Center.

Nearly 600-million dollars in city, county, and state tax payer money is being put up to renovate the arena.

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Storm lost at home to the Chicago Sky 82-80, while the Fire won 88-85 at the Phoenix Mercury. Seattle is now 7-and-30 on the season and will visit Dallas in its next game this Sunday. Portland improved to 15-and-20 and visits Toronto on Friday.

NFL:

The Seahawks first preseason game against Dallas showed promise for some young players including receiver Montorie Foster Jr. who scored Seattle’s only touchdown, and could have had another had the pass been on target.

The biggest news of the weekend was the contract extension for defensive back Devon Witherspoon. The three-time Pro Bowler, who had a case for Super Bowl MVP signed a six-year deal.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Fall Camp is underway.

Oregon State wide receiver Eddie Freauff met with the media after practice this week.

The stand out from Crook County High battled back from injuries last season and is now one of the veteran pass catchers.

He says the new coaching staff has got the offense firing.

"Fall camp everything is starting to click. You can see that in the receiver room, running back room, o line room, quarterback room. Everybody’s finally on the same page so like we're rolling right now."

Freauff points to head coach JaMarcus Shephard’s experience as a receivers coach with making that squad better and setting high expectations.

Meanwhile in Eugene, Ducks coaches refuted reports that running back Jordan Davison would be missing significant time after getting banged up in practice.

The sophomore was injured late last season and didn’t play in the Peach Bowl loss to Indiana.

The NBA schedule is out and the Portland Trail Blazers will open their season October 21st at the Moda Center against the Phoenix Suns. Then, it's on the road to play Sacramento and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Tomorrow we’ll hear from Oregon State’s Eddie Freauf. The wide receiver out of Crook County has impressed head coach JaMarcus Shephard with his athleticism and work ethic.

NBA:

Portland’s city council yesterday (Wed) approved putting 120-million dollars toward renovating the Moda Center. The 8 – 4 decision means the city, Multnomah county, and the State have agreed to put tax-payer money into the aging arena to keep the Trail Blazers. The team now has a December 31^st deadline to sign a lease to stay. Negotiations on the lease agreement will need to get done in the next 3 and half months.

Meanwhile, the Blazers’ NBA Cup schedule has been released. They’ll play the Lakers, Kings, Spurs, and Warriors in their group play starting November 6^th.
 

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Fire lost at home to the Minnesota Lynx 85-81. Portland is now 13-and-20 on the season and will visit Seattle tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Storm sit at 7-and-28 after beating Chicago on Monday, which ended their 11-game losing streak.

NFL:

Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald is getting a new found respect from fans around the league after the latest episode of Hard Knocks. The normally mild-mannered coach ripped into a defensive player for getting too close to quarterback Sam Darnold. Macdonald’s Not Safe For Work comments about him running the practice got a lot of play on social media.

The Seahawks first preseason game is Saturday against Dallas.

LOCAL:

The Bend North Little League team was eliminated yesterday (Wed) from Northwest Regionals. The Bend team, representing Oregon lost to Washington to end their run in the tournament.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Fall Camp is underway.

In Corvallis, head coach JaMarcus Shephard told reporters at yesterday’s media availability he’s working on a culture change for the Beavers.

"Part of that is just redefining that for our players. I’m consistently doing that within the program. It really starts with ‘how to win, how do you win’."

Shephard says turnovers, field position, and explosive plays are three areas of focus.

In Eugene, Oregon leads the country with five players on the 2026 Lombardi Award watch list: tight end Jamari Johnson, offensive lineman Pancho Laloulu, linebackers Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei, and defensive lineman A’Mauri Washington.

The honor recognizes college football’s top lineman.

Ducks’ Quarterback Dante Moore also earned a spot on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list for community service.

NBA:

Portland’s city council is expected to vote Wednesday morning on an agreement to spend public money on the renovations for the Moda Center to get the Trail Blazers to stay in the arena.

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Fire will host the Minnesota Lynx tonight in Portland. The Fire have won two in-a-row to improve to 13-and-19 on the season. Meanwhile, the Storm are back in action Friday when they host the Fire. Seattle is 7-and-28.

NFL:

One of the Seattle Seahawks' defensive stars is back on the field.

Safety Nick Emmanwori passed his physical and was activated from the physically unable to perform list ahead of yesterday’s practice.

The 2^nd year player underwent offseason ankle surgery.

LOCAL:

The Bend North Little League team will play Washington today in a semifinal game for a chance to make it to the Northwest Regional Final.

The Bend team, representing Oregon plays Soundview again after losing to them in the tournament opener.

First pitch is at Noon.

Oregon defensive back Koi Perich is on the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, for the nation's most versatile player.

Perich is also preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, and he was also one of 12 players on the Big Ten Preseason Honors list.

Perich transferred from Minnesota.

Seattle was back to practice Monday at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center following Saturday night’s practice at Lumen Field. While rookie running back Jadarian Price sat out again with lower body soreness, receiver Jake Bobo was among players suiting up for the first time during training camp. Another episode of the Seahawks’ Hard Knocks series airs Tuesday on HBO.

WNBA:

The Portland Fire are preparing to host one of the hottest teams in the WNBA right now. The Fire will host the Minnesota Lynx tomorrow night in Portland. The Lynx have been on a tear, winning 12 of their last 13 games. The Fire have won two in-a-row to improve to 13-and-19. Later this week, Portland will head to Seattle on Friday to take on the Storm.

LOCAL:

The Bend North Little League beat Alaska Monday to advance to a semifinal game Wednesday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

In Corvallis, the Beavers aren’t totally starting from scratch despite turnover in the entire coaching staff.

Returning Running Back Cornell Hatcher Jr says he was convinced to stay after meeting with coach JaMarcus Shephard, “He brings a whole other level of intensity that I haven’t had before and I just felt like it was something I couldn’t miss out on.”

In Eugene, Ducks offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer says quarterback Dante Moore is more comfortable taking command of the team, “I think his biggest growth and development has been in his leadership role and the way that he pushes guys outside. And not just does it with his words; does it with his actions.”

Practice for week 2 of fall camp continues today.

NBA:

The Trail Blazers, and officials from City of Portland and the State have reportedly met with an architecture firm to go over steps on choosing a general contractor for Moda Center’s almost 600-million dollars in renovations.

The city council is set to vote Wednesday on the final terms of the agreement to use tax dollars to pay for upgrading the aging arena.

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Fire will host the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday. Portland has won two in-a-row to improve to 13-and-19. Meanwhile, the Storm host the Chicago Sky tonight in Seattle. The Storm have now lost 11 straight to slip to 6-and-28.

LOCAL:

The Bend All-stars 12U Little League team plays a loser-out game Southern California at the Northwest Regionals.

Fall Camp is underway.

Another day, another pre-season watchlist: Poncho is a Rimington Trophy candidate again. Iapani Laloulu was a finalist in his junior season, and is once again up for the top Center award.

Ducks defensive coordinator Chris Hampton said after yesterday’s practice the team is installing new schemes and self-scouting.

The team is hoping to be able to practice outside today after indoor sessions the past two days because of wildfire smoke.

In Corvallis, both offensive coordinator Mitch Dahlen, and defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre at yesterday’s media session spoke about players getting bigger and faster over the summer.
Both U of O and OSU plan to have players in pads today and this weekend.

NBA:

The State of Oregon has hired a Special Assistant Attorney General to advise the Oregon Department of Administrative Services on the 600-million dollar renovation project at the Moda Center.

Multnomah County commissioners yesterday (Th) approved on a 4 – 1 vote contributing 100-million dollars to the reno.

Although, there is still a question of where that hundred-mill is coming.

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Fire crushed Toronto 97-83 at home to end their five-game skid. Portland improved to 12-and-19 on the season. The Fire will host the Seattle Storm tomorrow. Seattle is just 6-and-27 and riding a 10-game losing streak.

Fall Camp is underway, and the preseason number 2 ranked Ducks continue practice this week in what coach Dan Lanning says is his favorite time of year. Another preseason watch list recognition goes to tight end Jamari Johnson for the John Mackey tight end Award.

In Corvallis, head coach JaMarcus Shephard met with the media after yesterday’s first practice.

Coach Shephard says the team is focusing on this season but creating habits that will form a legacy.

NBA:

A prediction market has St Louis as the leading city to get the Trail Blazers if the team relocates.

Portland is heavily favored to keep the team, according to Kalshi.

WNBA:

In WNBA action, the Fire host Toronto tonight. Portland has lost five straight to fall to 11-and-19. Later this weekend, Portland will host the Seattle Storm on Saturday. Seattle is 6-and-27 on the season after losing to the New York Liberty 96-82 last night for their 10th straight setback.

Fall Camp is starting in Corvallis for new Oregon State head coach JaMarcus Shephard looking to rebuild the Beavers in the new Pac 12.

As the Ducks begin practice in Eugene some preseason watch list announcements: Brandon Finney Jr., Koi Perich and A’Mauri Washington are up for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the best defensive player.

Washington was joined by defensive lineman Bear Alexander and center Pancho Laloulu on the Outland Trophy list for best lineman.

And quarterback Dante Moore makes preseason Maxwell Award given to the best all-around player.

The countdown to the start of the college football season continues today with the release of the preseason coaches' poll. Ohio State will open the campaign on top of the rankings, followed by Oregon. Georgia, Texas and Notre Dame round out the top five.

NBA:

In Portland, Trail Blazers’ management are asking fans to show up to this morning’s City Council meeting to support the team during a public hearing.

This as city leaders are looking at paying $120-million to renovate the Moda Center.

Funding would also come from Multnomah County, state money would carry the bulk of it at 365-million.

A council vote on the proposal is set for Wednesday the 12^th.

NFL:

The Seahawks rookie safety Bud Clark appears to be a breakout star for this season’s Hard Knocks series on HBO. But the 2^rd round pick is proving it on the field, as he has been getting reps at several spots in the defensive backfield, including with the first-team defense.

Oregon held its media day in Eugene Monday with players and coaching staff answering questions from local reporters.

Head Coach Dan Lanning talked about his team’s sky-high expectations, and the pressure on his assistants, particularly new offensive and defensive coordinators.

“Our players are, are certainly very excited to get out there and get in the action. They've worked really, really hard this summer. I think anytime any of us coaches or staff get the opportunity to be away from Eugene for a little bit in the summer, when we come back, we recognize how beautiful and special this place is. So, we're excited to get back to work. We talk about being here and now and focusing on the moment and, and that's really where our guys' focus is.”

The Ducks start fall practice Wednesday.

MLB:
A flurry of deals yesterday at the trade deadline saw Seattle send a relief pitcher and a couple of minor league prospects to Baltimore for outfielder Taylor Ward. This season with the Orioles, Ward leads the AL in walks and ranks 6th in On Base Percentage. The right-handed hitter has some power and can drive in runs also. Ward will be needed right away as the Ms announced outfielder Luke Raley is done for the season with an arm injury.

Seattle sits three games under .500 and three games behind Houston for first place in the AL West with a week-long homestand beginning tonight with the visiting Detroit Tigers.

NFL:

The Seahawks’ first episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks streams at 6 p.m. on HBO Max tonight, and airs on HBO at 9 p.m.

The series has been around since 2001, but this is the first time it will follow a reigning Super Bowl champion.

Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald says the team is not trying to act differently for the cameras.

Quarterback Sam Darnold told Seahawks dot com it will be cool for fans to get to see more of Macdonald’s personality.

The Portland Trail Blazers’ preseason schedule is out and includes a historic matchup at Moda Center. On Monday, October 12th, Portland will host the BC London Lions. The Lions are the reigning champions of the UK’s top pro league, and it’ll be the first time a British club faces an NBA team.

The four-game preseason schedule runs October 7^th through 16^th.
