(Portland, OR) -- Fall is here, and fire season isn't over yet. The Oregon Department of Forestry reports seven large active fires are burning. Four of the fires are on land that's protected by the State of Oregon. The Narrows, Austin, Grasshopper and Rowe Creek fires are all at least 98-percent contained. There are more than 24-hundred personnel working the seven large fires.

The investigation resulted in the closure of more than 81 open cases, representing more than 32-hundred-dollars in stolen merchandise. Officers also conducted a retail theft mission at Jantzen Beach Shopping Center. 13 people were arrested and 22-hundred-dollars in stolen items were recovered.

(Rogue River, OR) -- A teenager is facing charges in connection with a deadly crash that caused the East Evans Creek Fire. The crash happened July 10th. A 17-year-old driver was speeding in rural Rogue River, hit a power pole, and rolled over killing an 18-year-old passenger. An Oregon Department of Forestry fire engine was nearby and started fighting the fire and trying to save the victim who died. The fire burned more than 15-thousand-acres. The driver is charged with criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving and criminal mischief.

(Corvallis, OR) -- Social media is no substitute for emotional support people receive from in-person relationships. Two studies from Oregon State University looked at social media use. One study found that people with lowest levels of real-life emotional support had more than eight times the odds of loneliness. Another study found people who read social media within 30 minutes of waking were strongly associated with depression. They don't know if social media causes the depression or if depression causes people to use social media as soon as they wake up.

(Newport, OR) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a small plane that crashed into the ocean west of Newport, Oregon. It was reported just before one o'clock local time Monday afternoon. The 78-year-old pilot was the only person on the twin-engine plane. The aircraft reportedly entered the water at a high rate of speed, and the pilot wasn't seen getting out. The 12-hour search covered 124 square miles. The pilot remains missing.

I-5 Closure Delays Get Longer

(Portland, OR) -- ODOT reports the delay on I-5 southbound because of the closure at I-405 is now twice as long. During the afternoon peak hour, it normally takes nine minutes to travel from the Columbia River to the I-405 junction. Now it's taking 22 minutes. Drivers are using alternate routes including I-205, I-84, Interstate Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. They're also shifting the time of their commute. Peak travel times on I-5 now start at 5 a.m. instead of 6 a.m. The evening commute is lasting about 90 minutes longer.

A new report from Valley Spring Recovery Center ranks Oregon 25th among the 50 states for binge drinking levels. Researchers analyzed data on excessive alcohol consumption and found that nearly 16-percent of Oregon adults reported binge drinking in 2023. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as five or more drinks for men and four or more drinks for women. Iowa had the highest binge drinking rate followed by North Dakota. Utah had the lowest rate in the country. The rankings are based on 2023 federal CDC health data on excessive alcohol consumption.

(Portland, OR) -- The victim of a hit and run crash near Southeast 174th and Division Street in Portland on August 9th has died. Police responded to a welfare check and found 48-year-old Lisa Straine with serious injuries. She died on August 22nd. Police identified and interviewed the driver. (Portland, OR) -- Portland Police and other city agencies cleared squatters from a nuisance property near Southeast 111th Avenue and Powell Boulevard last week. The house has been abandoned for several years. It's known for criminal activity and stolen vehicles. Twelve people were at the house and five people were arrested for previous warrants, a stolen vehicle and two for barricading themselves in the home. (Burns, OR) -- An emergency rescue is underway to save wild horses in remote southeastern Oregon. Water sources on the Sheepshead-Heath Creek Herd Management Area have dwindled from 63 to just two this year because of drought. There are up to 12-hundred wild horses on the 200-thousand acres. It can only support 900 horses. The Bureau of Land Management plans to move around 500 horses to an off-range facility where they'll be evaluated and some will eventually become available for adoption.

(Medford, OR) -- A Medford man has been indicted on illegal gun and destructive device charges. In February, a witness reported 32-year-old Michael Beugli throwing guns out of his Medford home. Beugli is a convicted felon and is not allowed to possess firearms. There were nine guns and homemade silencers. About a month later, court documents show Beugli threatened the witness. An explosive device was detonated inside of the witness's car. Beugli was arrested at a nearby home. He had similar destructive devices and explosive materials.

(Beaverton, OR) -- The arrest of a wanted suspect has led to a major identity theft operation in Beaverton. A Beaverton Police officer saw Joseph Gregori at an apartment complex and arrested him for outstanding warrants. During a search, they found hundreds of pieces of suspected stolen mail, 34 credit cards, stolen and altered checks, three U.S. passports belonging to other people, thousands of collectible trading cards and counterfeit U.S. Postal Service master keys. Gregori was indicted for identity theft, mail theft and drug charges.

(Clatsop County, OR) -- Oregon State Police have released more details about a crash Friday night on Highway 26 in the Coast Range. Five vehicles were involved. Investigators say a 77-year-old Portland man was eastbound when he crossed into oncoming traffic and sideswiped another vehicle before striking a pickup head-on. Vancouver firefighters responded to a report of a dumpster fire against the Furniture World building on Northeast St. John's Road. (Parkdale, OR) -- Two people are dead following a plane crash Monday near Parkdale. The Hood River County Sheriff's Office received reports of a plane crash. The Sheriff's Office plane and Parkdale Fire Department crews searched the area and found the crash scene near an orchard. The pilot and passenger in the single-engine plane were both killed. They're identified as James Crain and Scott Perry, both of Hood River. The NTSB will investigate the cause of the crash.

(Cave junction, OR) -- An abducted child in Josephine County was safely recovered Monday morning. An Amber Alert was issued for an eight-month-old infant who was taken by a noncustodial parent from a residence southwest of Cave Junction. The suspect was believed to be armed.
