(Salt Lake City, UT)  -- The Bruins went to Salt Lake City and stifled number-13 Utah in a 17-9 win at Rice-Eccles Stadium.  Josh Rosen threw for 220 yards and a touchdown in the low-scoring affair.  Paul Perkins padded the slim lead in the fourth quarter with a two-yard touchdown run as the Bruins get set for a showdown with USC next week for the Pac-12 South title.  The Utes were 8-of-19 on third down and fumbled twice as they lost their third game in five weeks after starting the year 6-and-0.  Joe Williams ran for 121 yards as he started in place of the injured Devontae Booker.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Trail Blazers welcome back big man LaMarcus Aldridge to the Moda Center tonight.  Aldridge returns for the first time since bolting the Blazers for San Antonio via free agency.  Portland is 4-and-4 overall, and have lost two straight games.  The Spurs are 5-and-2 on the season.  Tip tonight at 7:30.

(Portland, OR)  --  Gerald Henderson could make his Trail Blazers debut tonight at home against the San Antonio Spurs.  Henderson has sat out the first eight games of the season while he worked his way back from offseason hip surgery.  He is listed as "probable" for the contest.  The seventh-year veteran came to the Blazers in a July trade that sent forward Nicolas Batum to Charlotte.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State senior guard Gary Payton the Second is adding to his list of preseason accolades.  Payton has been added to the Lute Olson Player of the Year watch list.  The honor goes to the top player in college basketball who has played at least two seasons.  The Beavers tip their season Saturday at home against Northwest Christian.

(Kennewick, WA)  --  The Portland Winterhawks are on the road tonight at Tri-City.  The 'Hawks fell to 7-9-and-0 with an 8-5 loss to the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday.  Portland has split its two games this season with the Americans.  Puck drop from Kennewick, Washington at 7:05.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners are hoping free-agent pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma will remain in Seattle.  The team has extended Iwakuma a 15-point-eight-million-dollar qualifying offer for a year, which he has until Friday to accept of reject.  CBSSports.com reports if Iwakuma rejects the offer, Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto will offer him a two-year deal "on top of" the qualifying offer.  If Iwakuma signs with another club, the Mariners will get that team's top draft pick if it's outside the top ten.

(Denver, CO)  --  J.J. Hickson had 19 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks as the Nuggets knocked off the Trail Blazers, 108-104, in Denver.  Damian Lillard netted a game-high 30 to go along with seven assists for Portland, which has dropped two straight to fall to 4-and-4.  All five Blazer starters scored in double-figures in defeat.  The Blazers return home to the Moda Center to host the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon Ducks may be without defensive back Juwaan Williams for the rest of the season.  Defensive backs coach John Neal hinted Williams could miss an extended period of time.  Head coach Mark Helfrich did not comment on Williams' injury, and how long he could be out.  He registered eight tackles against Washington.  Up next the Ducks visit seventh-ranked Stanford.

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland State is slipping in the latest college football rankings.  The FCS Coaches Poll has the Vikings dropping from 11th to 16th after losing 35-32 to Northern Colorado.  Up next PSU hosts 15th-ranked Southern Utah.

(Atlanta, GA)  --  Former Braves and Angels pitcher Tommy Hanson is dead at 29.   Hanson had been in a coma in an Atlanta-area hospital.  The Braves tweeted a photo of Hanson early this morning with the quote "RIP, Tommy".  Hanson hadn't pitched in the majors since 2013 and spent the last two years in the minors.

(Columbus, OH)  --  Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett is retaining his starting role as he returns from a one-game suspension for his arrest on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence.  Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyers says as long as the redshirt sophomore has a good week of practice, he will return as the starter.

(Undated)  --  Longtime Seattle Mariners star Ken Griffey Jr. is among the 37 players on the ballot for enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame.  In 22 seasons, Griffey racked up 630 home runs, was a ten-time Gold Glove recipient, and made the Major League All-Star team 13 times.  Mariners icon Edgar Martinez is also on the ballot for the seventh time, after being cited last year on 27-percent of returned ballots.  Seventy-five percent is required to make the Hall of Fame.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Pistons outscored the Trail Blazers 41-11 in the fourth quarter as they rallied for a 120-103 win at the Moda Center.  Damian Lillard posted 26 points and 11 assists to pace the Blazers, who fell to 4-and-3.  C.J. McCollum scored 18 points and Meyers Leonard had 17 in the setback.  Portland is right back in action tonight against the Nuggets in Denver.

(Vancouver, British Columbia) --  The Portland Timbers punched a ticket to the Western Conference final with a 2-0 win over Vancouver.  Diego Chara and Fanendo Adi had the goals for Portland, which will face FC Dallas in the final.  The first leg is on November 22nd.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Ducks amassed a school-record 777 total yards in a 44-28 blow out of Pac-12 rival California at Autzen Stadium.  Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns for Oregon, which won its third straight game.  Royce Freeman ran for 180 of the 477 total rushing yards for the Ducks, who sit at 6-and-3.  The team hits the road next week for a showdown with 11th-ranked Stanford.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Beavers were shutout for the first time in five years in a 41-0 loss to UCLA at Reser Stadium.  Freshman quarterback Nick Mitchell threw three interceptions in his third straight start.  Oregon State allowed 674 total yards and has yet to win a conference game this season.  The team looks to snap a six-game losing streak when it heads Cal this weekend.

(Arlington, TX)  --  Sam Bradford's 41-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Matthews in overtime gave the Eagles a 33-27 win over the Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football".  Philadelphia evened its record at 4-and-4.  Dallas has lost six straight in Tony Romo's absence.

(Indianapolis, IN)  --  Peyton Manning's return to Indianapolis resulted in the Broncos' first loss of the year.  Andrew Luck threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Colts to a 27-24 win over Denver.  The Broncos dropped to 7-and-1.

(Columbia, MO)  --  Dozens of black football players at the University of Missouri say they won't take part in team activities unless university president Tim Wolfe resigns.  Wolfe has come under fire for his lack of action following a some racial incidents on campus.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers' backcourt combined for 11 three-pointers as they blew out the Grizzlies, 115-96, at the Moda Center.  Damian Lillard knocked down seven from deep on his way to 27 points, while C.J. McCollum connected on four threes and scored 20 points.  Portland improved to a surprising 4-and-2 through six games.  The Blazers host Detroit on Sunday.

(New Orleans, LA)  --  Marcus Mariota is in line to start for the Tennessee Titans on Sunday when they visit the New Orleans Saints.  The rookie signal-caller has missed the past two games due to a knee injury.  He was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.  Mariota has thrown for just over 12-hundred yards and nine touchdowns in his first pro season after winning the Heisman Trophy while at Oregon last year.

(Vancouver, British Columbia)  --  The Portland Timbers clash with Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Game Two of the Western Conference semifinals at BC Place on Sunday.  The Timbers played to a scoreless draw last Sunday against Vancouver at home.  The Timbers will advance to the conference finals with a win or draw.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon Ducks go for their third straight win tomorrow night when they host the Cal Golden Bears at Autzen Stadium.  The Ducks are 5-and-3 on the year and 3-and-2 in the Pac-12.  Cal is 5-and-3 as well, with a 2-and-3 conference mark.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State attempts to stop a five-game losing streak as they host number-23 UCLA at Reser Stadium tomorrow.  The Beavers' last win came on September 19th against San Jose State, and they're winless in the Pac-12.  The Bruins are 6-and-2.

(Greeley, CO)  --  The 7-and-1 Portland State Vikings hit the road to clash with Northern Colorado tomorrow.  The Vikings have won four straight games and are third in the Big Sky at 4-and-1.  Northern Colorado is 4-and-4, with a 2-and-4 conference mark.

(Seattle, WA)  --  Two pitchers and an outfielder are now with the Seattle Mariners' organization, following a six-player deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.  Seattle has sent utility man Brad Miller, first baseman Logan Morrison, and pitcher Danny Farquhar to the Rays for right-handed starter Nathan Karns, reliever C.J. Riefenhauser, and Minor League outfielder Boog Powell.  It was the first trade completed by new Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto.

(Portland, OR)  --  A report from Arizona's senate delegation shows the Portland Trail Blazers made tens of thousands on "paid patriotism" events.  A report from Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain shows the Blazers got about 35-thousand bucks for military promotion at games in 2012 and 2013.  Nationwide, more than nine-million dollars was spent on similar events with various professional teams.

(Cleveland, OH)  --  LeBron James scored 23 points and tore two sleeves as the Cavaliers rallied for a 96-86 win over the Knicks.  James personally customized the sleeved jersey while the game was in progress after struggling to shoot in the first half.

(Oakland, CA)  --  Steph Curry scored 31 points as the Warriors cut down the Clippers, 112-108, in a see-saw affair in Oakland.  The defending NBA champions improved to 5-and-0 and handed the Clippers their first loss of the season.
 

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke is opting out of the final three years of his contract to become a free agent.  The 32-year-old will pass up a guaranteed 71-million dollars to test the open market.  Greinke is a leading NL Cy Young candidate after going 19-and-3 with a major league-best 1.66 ERA this past season.

(Chapel Hill, NC)  --  The co-top-ranked basketball team in the country will open the year without one of its best players.  North Carolina star Marcus Paige will miss three-to-four weeks with a broken non-shooting hand.  The college hoops season begins a week from tomorrow.

(Berea, OH)  --  "Johnny Football" will be in the spotlight on "Thursday Night Football".  Johnny Manziel will start at quarterback for the Browns when they clash with the Bengals tonight in Cincinnati.  The Heisman Trophy winner is stepping in for the injured Josh McCown.

(Undated)  --  Clemson is number-one in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season.  The 8-and-0 Tigers got the nod over 7-and-0 LSU.  Defending national champion Ohio State and 7-and-1 Alabama round out the top four.  LSU and Alabama meet in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.

(Nashville, TN)  --  The NFL has claimed its second coaching casualty of the season.  The Titans have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after a 1-and-6 start to the year.  Former Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey will replace Whisenhunt on an interim basis.

(Washington, DC)  --  Dusty Baker is the new manager of the Nationals.  The 66-year-old Baker replaces Matt Williams, who was fired after the Nats failed to make the playoffs this past season.  Baker has been named Manager of the Year three times in his career.

(Irving, TX)  --  The Cowboys are giving running back Joseph Randle his walking papers.  The third-year back has been waived by the Cowboys.  Randle was already away from the team to deal with an unspecified personal issue.  He recently lost his starting job to Darren McFadden.

(Flushing, NY)  --  The Mets didn't win it all, but they are still rewarding manager Terry Collins for a trip to the World Series.  They have agreed to a new two-year contract with the 66-year-old through 2017.  Collins just finished his fifth year with the Mets.

(Minneapolis, MN)  --  Damian Lillard dropped in a game-high 34 points as the Trail Blazers spoiled the Timberwolves home opener with a 106-101 victory at the Target Center.  C.J. McCollum netted 18 points, while Al-Farouq Aminu added 17 points and nine rebounds for Portland, which evened up its record at 2-and-2.  The Blazers remain on the road to visit the Utah Jazz tomorrow.

(Philadelphia, PA)  --  Cavaliers star LeBron James is the youngest player to score 25-thousand career points in NBA history.  The 30-year-old James reached the milestone on a dunk in the fourth quarter of Cleveland's 107-100 win over the 76ers.  James is only the 20th player to ever reach the 25-thousand-point mark.

(Eugene, OR)  -  Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost says Arizona State the "diligent" attempt at stealing signs he has ever seen.  Frost tells "Oregon Live" the Sun Devils were relentless last week in the Ducks' 61-55 triple overtime victory.  This is the second time a Pac-12 opponent has accused ASU of trying to steal signals, as Utah claimed the same thing after their October 17th tilt.

(Englewood, CO)  --  The Broncos are beefing up their passing attack for the second half of the season.  Denver has acquired veteran tight end Vernon Davis from the 49ers.   Davis had 18 catches for 194 yards with San Francisco this season.  Meanwhile, the NFL trading deadline is at 4:00 p.m. Eastern today.

(Portland, OR)  -  After playing to a draw in their first match, the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps face-off in the MLS playoffs on Sunday.  It is the second of a two-leg series, and the match takes place at BC Place in Vancouver.  The Timbers can advance with a win or a draw.

(Charlotte, NC)  --  Graham Gano's 52-yard field goal with just over five minutes left in overtime gave the Panthers a wild 29-26 win over the Colts on "Monday Night Football".  Indy scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth and briefly led in overtime before Gano's boot sent Carolina to 7-and-0.

(Renton, WA)  --  Team officials say Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette has undergone successful neck surgery.  Lockette will be out for the season after he was the target of a violent block by the Cowboys' Jeff Heath during a punt return in Sunday's game.  Lockette suffered a concussion and serious neck ligament and disc issues.  Head coach Pete Carroll says it's too early to tell whether the injury is career-threatening.

(Minneapolis, MN)  --  The Trail Blazers begin a brief two-game road trip tonight in Minnesota against the Timberwolves.  They will then head to Utah to play the Jazz on Wednesday.  The Blazers are 1-and-2 after losing both games in their home-and-home series with Phoenix.  The Wolves are 2-and-0. Tip-off on KBND is at 5:00 p.m.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon Ducks are back to work preparing for this Saturday's showdown with Cal at Autzen Stadium.  The Ducks aim for a third straight win after beating Arizona State 61-55 in triple-overtime last Thursday.  OU is 5-and-3 overall and 3-and-2 in Pac-12 play.

(Arlington, TX)  --  The Seahawks are at .500 after squeezing out a win over the Dallas Cowboys, 13-12.  Steven Hauschka put Seattle ahead for good with a 26-yard field goal with a little over a minute remaining in yesterday's game.  Russell Wilson accounted for the Seahawks' only touchdown, with a 22-yard pass to Luke Willson in the second quarter.  Seattle will host division rival Arizona Next Sunday night in prime time.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Timbers will move on to the second leg of their Western Conference semifinal, after battling Vancouver to a scoreless draw.  The Timbers can advance with a tie, should they net a goal at BC Place against the Whitecaps.  The second-leg match will begin at seven o'clock next Sunday night.

(Flushing, NY)  --  The Royals are World Series champions for the first time in 30 years.  Kansas City scored two runs in the ninth and five more in the 12th to pull out a 7-2 win over the Mets in Game Five of the Fall Classic.  The Royals clinched their first title since 1985.

(Portland, OR)  --  Eric Bledsoe went off for 33 points as the Suns knocked off the Trail Blazers 101-90 at the Moda Center.  It was the second straight win for Phoenix over Portland as part of a home-and-home series.  Brandon Knight finished with 27 points while Tyson Chandler grabbed 11 boards.  Markieff Morris finished with 15 points for the 2-and-1 Suns.  Damian Lillard recorded 23 points and eight assists in the loss.  C.J. McCollum added 15 points and Allen Crabbe chipped in 11 off the bench.  The Trail Blazers sit at 1-and-2.
