Timbers Fall To Galaxy In U.S. Open Cup

(Portland, OR)  --  The LA Galaxy edged the Timbers, 1-nil, in the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup at Providence Park.  Raul Mendiola's fifth-minute goal was the only score of the match.  Darlington Nagbe rejoined Portland after playing for the U.S. Men's National Team in the Copa America Centenario but was unable to find the net.  The Timbers return to MLS action on Monday when they travel to Colorado to face the Rapids.

Trail Blazers Extend Offers To Crabbe, Harkless, Leonard

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers have extended qualifying offers to Allen Crabbe, Maurice Harkless and Meyers Leonard.  Portland now has the right to match any offers they receive from other teams.  All three players become restricted free agents tomorrow.

Tumolo Joins Ducks' Lacrosse Staff

(Eugene, OR)  --  Michelle Tumolo has been named an assistant coach for Oregon's women's lacrosse team.  Tumolo will help coordinate the team's offense.  She previously was an assistant coach at Florida and Syracuse.  Tumolo is a member of the U.S. Women's National Team.

Pirates Clobber Mariners, 8-1

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will host a four-game series with Baltimore after losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-1.  Sean Rodriguez drove in four runs to help Pittsburgh split the two-game series with Seattle.  Mariners starter Wade Miley picked up the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings.  The Mariners and Orioles will get started at Safeco Field tonight at 7:10.

Oregon's Hawkins, Maasland Awarded Hansen Medals

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins and Daan Maasland have been awarded the Pac-12's Tom Hansen Conference Medal.  Hawkins concluded her Ducks' softball career as a three-time All-American.  Maasland helped lead the Ducks' men's tennis team to a number-34 ranking this past season.  The medals are "based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership."

Ducks' Inglis To Make LPGA Debut

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Caroline Inglis is set to make her LPGA Tour debut this weekend at the Portland Classic after receiving an exemption from the Tournament Golf Foundation.  Inglis is the Ducks' all-time scoring leader with an average of 72.21.  She won the Pac-12 individual golf title in 2015.

Barnard Named OSU Volleyball Coach

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Mark Barnard has been named head coach of the Oregon State volleyball team.  Barnard spent the past 11 seasons as a member of the Beavers' volleyball staff.  He replaces former head coach Taras Liskevych, who retired last month.

Steel Off This Week

(Portland, OR)  --  The Steel will try to get things turned around while on a bye this week.  Portland is 1-11 on the season, including a 59-38 loss to the Philadelphia Soul on Monday.  The Steel return to action on Saturday, July 9th when they host the Orlando Predators at the Moda Center.
 

Skinkis Joins PSU Basketball Staff

(Portland, OR)  --  Chris Skinkis has been named an assistant coach for the Portland State men's basketball team.  Skinkis spent the past two season as an assistant coach at North Carolina Central University.  He has experience coaching at the division one, division two, and community college levels over the past decade.

Hops Top Volcanoes With RBI In Ninth

(Hillsboro, OR)  --  The Hops topped the Volcanoes, 4-3, on an RBI single by Matt Railey in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Jake Winston picked up the win, striking out five over two innings of one-hit ball.  Hillsboro improved to 5-and-8 on the season.  The three-game series wraps up tonight at Ron Tonkin Field.

Timbers Host LA Galaxy Tonight

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Timbers host the LA Galaxy tonight from Providence Park as part of the 2016 US Open Cup.  The Timbers and Galaxy will battle to see who reaches the quarterfinals.  Opening kick at 7:30.

Portland Timbers' CONCACAF Champions League Schedule Announced

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Timbers open up their CONCACAF Champions League slate on August 3rd.  The team was drawn into Group B, and will face C.D. Dragon of El Salvador in their opening match from Providence Park.  The Timbers also will face Costa Deportivo Saprissa on the road on September 14th.

Nike Lands Top NBA Pick Simmons

(Beaverton, OR)  --  Sports apparel giant Nike is landing top NBA Draft pick Ben Simmons on a shoe deal.  Simmons signed a five-year, guaranteed 20-million-dollar contract earlier this month.  He visited with Nike reps last month after meeting with Adidas in Los Angeles.

Mariners Defeat Pirates, 5-2

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners are back above .500, after beating Pittsburgh, 5-2.  Nelson Cruz got his 20th home run of the year for Seattle, which has won three of its last four games.  Hisashi Iwakuma earned his seventh victory of the year after allowing two runs on six hits over six-and-two-thirds innings.  The Mariners and Pirates will play again tonight at Safeco Field.

Baldwin Agrees To Contract Extension With Seahawks

(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin will be staying in Seattle a while longer.  Baldwin has agreed to a four-year contract extension to keep him with the Seahawks through the 2020 season.  ESPN reports the deal averages more than eleven-million dollars per season and guarantees Baldwin 24-million.  Baldwin caught a career-high 78 passes for nearly eleven-hundred yards and 14 touchdowns in 2015.

Hops Blank Salem-Keizer

(Hillsboro, OR)  --  Tyler Mark fired seven shutout innings as Hillsboro blanked Salem-Keizer 6-0 at Ron Tonkin Field.  Matt Railey drove in a pair of runs for the Hops, who snapped a three-game skid.  The series continues tonight.

Blazers TV Contract Remains "Wide Open"

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Trail Blazers television broadcasting future remains very much up in the air.  The "Oregonian" reports the team has until 11:59 p.m. Thursday to ink a deal with a new television partner.  Potential suitors are in the running and competition remains "wide open."  The "Seattle Times" suggested the Blazers were leaving Comcast SportsNet Northwest, whom they have partnered with the last nine years, in favor of a new deal with ROOT Sports Northwest.  Team officials call those reports "untrue."

Report Smith, Bachynski To Join Blazers Summer League Team

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers continue to add to their Las Vegas Summer League roster.  The "Oregonian" reports big man Jordan Bachynski and guard Russ Smith will join the squad.  Four players from last year's roster including Pat Connaughton, Cliff Alexander, Luis Montero and Noah Vonleh are all slated to play in Vegas this summer.  Second-round draft pick Jake Layman also will join the team.

Hops Blanked In Vancouver

(Vancouver, British Columbia)  --  The Hops managed five hits in a 3-0 loss in Vancouver.  Anfernee Benitez allowed all three runs in six innings as he fell to 1-and-2.  Hillsboro is now 3-and-8.  The Hops host the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes starting tonight.

Seahawks Announce 13 Open Training-camp Practices

(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks fans are happy to hear the team has announced the dates of 13 open training-camp practices.  They'll begin July 30th and end on August 26th, with each practice to be held at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.  Fans can register for tickets online beginning Thursday morning at ten at Seahawks.com.  Fans age 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Timbers Rally For Win Over Dynamo

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers trailed by two goals at the half but rallied for a 3-2 win over the Dynamo at Providence Park on Sunday.  Lucas Melano put Portland on the board in the 64th minute.  Diego Valeri fired the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute and followed it up with the game-winning PK in stoppage time.  It was the first time in the team's MLS history that Portland has overcome a two-goal deficit to win a match.  The Timbers host the LA Galaxy on Wednesday night.

Trail Blazers Acquire Rights To Layman

(Portland, OR)  --  Despite not having a pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, the Trail Blazers still are getting a player.  Portland has acquired the rights to forward Jake Layman from Orlando in exchange for a future second-round pick and cash considerations.  Layman was originally chosen by the Magic with the 47th overall selection.  He averaged over 10 points and four rebounds per game in four seasons at the University of Maryland.

Oregon's Cheserek Named Finalist For Bowerman Award

(Eugene, OR)  --  University of Oregon distance runner Edward Cheserek has been named a finalist for the Bowerman award for the third consecutive year.  Cheserek is the only athlete to be named a three-time finalist for the Bowerman award, which is track and field's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.  The winner will be announced in December.

PSU's Peterson Wins Oregon Women's Amateur Championship

(Sisters, OR)  --  PSU golfer Krissy Peterson has won the Oregon Women's Amateur Championship.  She defeated Madison Odiorne of Washington State University in the semifinals and followed that up with a win over Gigi Stoll of the University of Arizona for the title.  With the win, Peterson becomes the first-ever Viking golfer to win the Oregon Amateur Championship.

Portland's Templin Nominated For Woman Of The Year Award

(Portland, OR)  --  Former Portland rower Molly Templin has been nominated for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year award.  Templin earned All-Conference honors as a senior and helped lead the Pilots to a fourth-place finish at the 2016 West Coast Conference Rowing Championships.  She was also named a National Scholar Athlete by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association and selected to the WCC's All-Academic Team.

St. Louis Powers Past Mariners, 11-6

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will have the day off after winning two of three against St. Louis.  The Cardinals hit six home runs yesterday to defeat Seattle, 11-6.  Nelson Cruz and Franklin Gutierrez each hit a solo homer for the Mariners.  Seattle is set to play two games at home against Pittsburgh, starting tomorrow night.

Steel Host Soul Tonight

(Portland, OR)  --  The Steel will be in search of their second win of the season when they host the Philadelphia Soul tonight at the Moda Center.  Portland is 1-and-10 on the year.  Philadelphia is 9-and-3.  The Steel made a pair of roster moves over the weekend, placing defensive back Arness Ikner on injured reserve and activating wide receiver Nick Truesdell from the injured reserve.

Mariners Swept By Detroit

(Detroit, MI)  --  The Mariners are now a game below .500 after losing to Detroit in ten innings, 5-4, completing a sweep for the Tigers.  Nelson Cruz slammed two home runs yesterday for Seattle, but the M's lost on a walk-off, bases-loaded wild pitch in the tenth.  Seattle, who has lost six in a row, will return home
to begin a three-game series against St. Louis tonight.  First pitch will be at 7:10. 
 

PSU's Peterson Advances To Oregon Amateur Semifinals

(Sisters, OR)  --  PSU golfer Krissy Peterson has advanced to the semifinals of the Oregon Women's Amateur Championship.  Peterson will face Madison Odiorne of Washington State University in an 8:54 a.m. tee time.  The winner will advance to tomorrow's championship.  
 

Portland's Lillard Withdraws From Team USA

(Portland, OR)  --  Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard will not play for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics.  Lillard has chosen to continue rehabilitating the plantar fasciitis injury that bothered him for much of the season.  Portland forward Al-Farouq Aminu will participate in the Games as part of Team Nigeria.  
 
 

OSU's Payton To Sign With Houston

(New York, NY)  --  Gary Payton the Second went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft.  Chris Haynes of "The Cleveland Plain Dealer" is reporting that Payton will sign a three-year contract with the Houston Rockets.  Payton led Oregon State in points, rebounds, assists and steals during his senior season. 
 
 

Oregon's Prakel Named All-American

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Sam Prakel has been named a first-team Academic All-American. The redshirt sophomore has a 3.95 GPA while majoring in biochemistry.  Prakel was previously named an Elite 90 award winner by the NCAA.  
 
 

Blazers Begin Summer League Play On July 9th

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers will tip off summer league play on Saturday, July 9th against the Phoenix Suns.  Portland will have a minimum of five games over a 10-day period, with the first three games all being played on the UNLV campus.  The rest of the schedule has not yet been released.  NBA TV will broadcast all of the Blazers' games. 
 
 

Timbers Host Dynamo On Sunday

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers continue to prepare for their upcoming match against the Dynamo.  Portland hosts Houston at Providence Park on Sunday.  The Timbers are eighth in the Western Conference with a record of 5-6-and-5 and 20 points.  The Dynamo are last in the west at 3-7-and-5 and 14 points.  
 
 

Trail Blazers Lack Pick In Tonight's NBA Draft

 (New York, NY)  --  The 2016 NBA Draft is tonight at the Barclays Center.  The Trail Blazers are one of six teams who do not own a pick in this year's draft.  According to "The Oregonian," Portland will be aggressive in tonight's draft despite not having any picks.  The Blazers ended last season with a record of 44-and-38. 
 

Mariners Fall To Detroit, 5-1

(Detroit, MI)  --  The Seattle Mariners are now in third place in the AL west, after losing their third game in a row in Detroit.  The Tigers defeated Seattle last night, 5-1, with help from Steven Moya's two home runs.  Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma [[ hee-SAH-shee EE-wah-KOO-mah ]] was knocked out in the fifth inning after allowing five runs on eleven hits.  The two teams will wrap up their four-game series later today. 
 

Mariners Bring Back Wilhelmsen

(Detroit, MI)  --  Relief pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen is back with the Seattle Mariners. Wilhelmsen, who was traded to Texas earlier this year in a multi-player deal, elected to become a free agent after being designated for assignment last week by the Rangers.  The Mariners, who need help with their bullpen, have signed Wilhelmsen to a one-year deal.  He compiled 67 saves over his previous five seasons in Seattle. 
 

Timbers Remove Controversial Chant

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers Army will no longer be singing or promoting a controversial chant that some fans called offensive to women.  The fan base is removing "Portland Boys" chant from its website.  Chant sheets distributed at matches will no longer include the chant and the Timbers Army will no longer lead the singing of the chant at matches as well. 

 

OSU's Casey Turns Down Texas Job

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State head baseball coach Pat Casey isn't going anywhere.  Casey says he was offered the Texas position following an interview, but he turned down the job the next morning.  The Oregon-native just completed his 22nd season at OSU, and could receive a bump to his 3.3-million-dollar annual salary. 

 

Mariners Lose To Detroit In 12 M

(Detroit, MI)  --  The Mariners are falling further back of first place in the AL West after dropping a 4-2 decision to Detroit.  The Tigers put on a late-inning rally last night to overcome a 2-0 deficit.  Kyle Seager got his 15th home run of the year in the 6th inning with a two-run shot for Seattle.  The Mariners will play again at Detroit this evening. 
 
 
 

NBA Draft Is Tomorrow

(Brooklyn, NY)  --  The 2016 NBA Draft is tomorrow at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.  The Trail Blazers do not own a draft pick.  The Nuggets acquired the Blazers first round selection, which is 19th overall.  Portland's second round pick went to the Chicago Bulls via the Cleveland Cavaliers.

 

Mariners Lose To Detroit In 12

(Detroit, MI)  --  The Seattle Mariners will try to even up their series with Detroit this evening, after losing the first game to the Tigers, 8-7, in 12 innings.  Justin Upton slammed a walk-off home run in the 12th to secure the win for Detroit.  Kyle Seager and Adam Lind each had homers for the Mariners, who have lost three straight. 
 

Blazers' McCollum To Intern At "Players' Tribune"

(Portland, OR)  --  Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum is getting a summer gig.  McCollum is participating in a week-long internship with The Player's Tribune.  He will assist The Players' Tribune editorial team in covering the upcoming NBA draft, interviewing top draft picks and getting a one-on-one sit down with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.  

 

Timbers Have No Interest In Transferring Adi

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Timbers have no interest in transferring striker Fanendo Adi to the Mexican side Tigres.  Adi's representatives told Goal.com that he is looking to move to a stronger league.  The "Oregonian" reports the Timbers won't be engaging Tigres on their offer for the 25-year-old.  

 

Gladiators Down Steel

(Portland, OR)  --  The Cleveland Gladiators downed the Portland Steel, 58-49, at the Moda Center on Saturday.  Portland quarterback Shane Austin threw for 291 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions in the loss.  The Steel dropped to 1-and-10 on the season.  Portland returns to action on Monday, June 27th, when it hosts the Philadelphia Soul. 

 

Ducks Sign National Player Of The Year

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon women's basketball team has signed Sabrina Ionescu [[ yah-ness-coo ]], the "USA Today" National Player of the Year.  Ionescu averaged over 25 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals as a high school senior.  According to ESPN, she is the fourth-ranked incoming freshman in the country. 

Timbers Draw Real Salt Lake

(Sandy, UT)  --  The Timbers held on for a 2-2 draw against Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.  Portland led 2-1 at the half with goals by Fanendo Adi [[ fah-NEN-doe ah-dee ]] and Lucas Melano.  RSL scored the equalizer in the second half on a penalty kick by Yura Movsisyan [[ mowv-SIS-ee-un ]].  The Timbers return to Providence Park to host the Houston Dynamo on Sunday. 
 

Trail Blazers Name Calabro New Play-By-Play Voice

(Portland, OR)  --  Kevin Calabro has been named the new television play-by-play voice of the Portland Trail Blazers.  Calabro is not a stranger to the NBA.  He previously spent 21 years as the play-by-play voice of the Seattle SuperSonics prior to the team moving to Oklahoma City.  Calabro has also worked for ESPN, TBS, NBA TV, and Westwood One Radio. 

Oregon's Nogosek Named All-American

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Stephen Nogosek has been named a second team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.  Nogosek finished the season with a 1.11 ERA and a 2-and-2 record.  He led the Pac-12 with 16 saves.  

Ducks Named Program Of The Year

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon track and field teams have been named the programs of the year.  The men's team received the John McDonnell Program of the Year Award for the fifth time in eight years.  The Oregon women's team won its eighth straight Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award.  

Timbers Prep For RSL

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers hit the road tomorrow night to take on Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium.  Portland is coming off a 2-nil win over the San Jose Earthquakes in U.S. Open Cup play on Tuesday.  The Timbers are seventh in the Western Conference with a record of 5-6-and-4 and 19 points.  

Lillard Unsure On Team USA

(Portland, OR)  --  Blazers guard Damian Lillard was non-committal when asked about playing for Team USA in the 2016 Summer Olympics.  The "Philippine Star" reports Lillard said he hadn't thought about playing in Rio this summer.  Point guards Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and John Wall have already bowed out of the Rio Games, leaving a hole at the point guard spot.  Team USA will hold a training camp next month in Las Vegas.

Blazers Fire TV, Radio Mainstays

(Portland, OR)  --  The Blazers are revamping their television and radio broadcasts after firing Mike Barrett, Mike Rice and Antonio Harvey.  Barrett was the team's lead TV announcer and Rice was the team's TV commentator.  Both had been with Blazers for 15-plus years.  Harvey has served as a radio analyst for 11 years after playing for Portland from 1999-2001.  Blazers' CEO Chris McGowan says the team is undergoing a nationwide search for their replacements.
 

Timbers Visit Real Salt Lake

(Sandy, UT)  --  The Portland Timbers return to MLS action on Saturday with a road game against Real Salt Lake.  The Timbers have 19 points in the standings, one behind San Jose for sixth place in the Western Conference.  The Timbers hope to clinch their first road win.
 

Hops, Emeralds Open Season Friday

(Undated)  --  The Hillsboro Hops and Eugene Emeralds both open their Northwest League schedules on Friday.  The defending champion Hops visit the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, while the Emeralds host the Boise Hawks.  Each team will play a 76-game Short Season Single-A slate.
 

Ex-Beaver Williams Killed In Los Angeles

(Inglewood, CA)  --  Former Oregon State linebacker Josh Williams is dead after being shot in Inglewood, California on Tuesday evening.  The 24-year-old Williams spent 2011-2013 with Oregon State, finishing his career with four tackles.  Williams spent the past two seasons playing for Kentucky State.

Oregon-UNLV Basketball Date Announced

(Portland, OR)  --  The Oregon Ducks men's basketball team will host the University of Nevada-Las Vegas at the Moda Center on December 17th.  The Ducks fell to UNLV last year, 80-69 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.  It'll be Oregon's first game in Portland since 2013.

Bases-loaded Walk Seals Mariners' Fate

(St. Petersburg, FL)  --  The Seattle Mariners are in the middle of a four-game losing streak, with their latest setback being a 3-2 decision in 13 innings to Tampa Bay.  A bases-loaded walk in the 13th allowed the winning run to cross the plate for the Rays.  Nelson Cruz got a two-run homer in the 4th inning for Seattle.  The two teams will wrap up their three-game series later today.
 

Timbers Beat Earthquakes, 2-0

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Timbers will move on to the Round of 16 in U.S. Open Cup play, after shutting out San Jose, 2-0, at Providence Park.  Dairon Asprilla and Jack McInerney each scored in the first half for the Timbers, who were able to make the lead stand up the rest of the way.  Portland will return to MLS play Saturday evening, when they visit Real Salt Lake.
 

Pair Of Beavers Expected To Sign With MLB Teams

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State is expected to lose a pair of players to the Major League Baseball draft.  The "Oregonian" reports junior reliever John Pomeroy is expected to take a physical and sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.  Junior infielder Caleb Hamilton says he is "leaning toward" signing with the Minnesota Twins.

OSU's Harrison Earns Team USA Invite

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State first baseman KJ Harrison is getting a chance to represent his country.  Harrison has accepted an invitation to join the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team over the summer.  This is the second consecutive season in which Harrison will play for Team USA, joining freshman second baseman Nick Madrigal on the squad.

Tampa Bay Rallies Past Mariners

(St. Petersburg, FL)  --  The Seattle Mariners are further back in second place in the AL West, after losing to Tampa Bay, 8-7.  The Rays rallied from a 7-4 deficit with help from a three-run homer by Evan Longoria.  Kyle Seager had a two-run round-tripper in the second inning for the Mariners.  Seattle will play again at Tampa Bay this evening.
 

Report: Texas Interested In OSU's Casey

(Corvallis, OR)  --  University of Texas is interested in Oregon State head baseball coach Pat Casey for their coaching vacancy.  The "Austin American-Statesman" reports Casey is on the short list to replace Augie Garrido, who stepped down after 20 seasons in Austin.  Casey is under contract with Oregon State through the 2020 season, which would mark his 26th year with the school.  Casey is scheduled to make 3.3-million-dollars in base salary over the course of the next four years.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers host the San Jose Earthquakes tonight at Providence Park in a U.S. Open Cup match.  Portland returns to MLS action on the road against Real Salt Lake on Saturday.  The Timbers are in seventh in the Western Conference with a record of 5-6-and-4 and 19 points.

Oregon, Nebraska Kickoff Time Scheduled

(Eugene, OR)  --  The biggest non-conference game of the Oregon Ducks football schedule is set.  Oregon will meet Nebraska at 12:30 Pacific on September 17th from Lincoln.  The Ducks are 1-and-5 all-time against the Cornhuskers, but have not played each other since 1986.

Lillard Releases New Song

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard is releasing his latest rap track.  Lillard dropped his third "Music Monday" of the offseason with a song called "hook Ones Freestyle."  This is the third song Lillard has released this summer after he put out "Talk to Em" and "Isley."
 

Hops, Emeralds Open Season Friday

(Undated)  --  The Hillsboro Hops and Eugene Emeralds both open their Northwest League schedules on Friday.  The defending champion Hops visit the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, while the Emeralds host the Boise Hawks.  Each team will play a 76-game Short Season Single-A slate.  
 

Ducks Finish As Runner-Up At NCAA Championships

(Eugene, OR)  --  The University of Oregon's women's outdoor team finished as runner-up at the NCAA Division One Track and Field Championships in Eugene.  The Ducks finished with 62 points, ten points behind winner Arkansas.  The Oregon men's team finished in fourth place with 48 points.

Ducks Win Individual Championships

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Ducks won multiple individual titles at the NCAA Division One Track and Field Championships in Eugene.  Ariana Washington took the title in the 100 and 200 meter events, and Raevyn Rogers won her third straight title in the 800.  On the men's side, Devon Allen won the 110 meter hurdles, and Edward Cheserek took him titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter events.

Five Beavers Selected In MLB Draft

(Secaucus, NJ)  --  Five members of the Oregon State baseball team have been selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.  Catcher Logan Ice was picked 72nd overall by the Cleveland Indians.  Pitcher Travis Eckert was selected with the 223rd pick by Kansas City.  Infielder Trever Morrison was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 351st pick.  The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up pitcher John Pomeroy with the 405th selection.  Infielder Caleb Hamilton rounded out the Beavers who were drafted, as he was taken 693rd by the Minnesota Twins.

Five Ducks Selected In MLB Draft

(Secaucus, NJ) --  Five members of the University of Oregon baseball team have been selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.  Pitcher Matt Krook was picked 125th by the San Francisco Giants.  Pitcher Cole Irvin was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 137th selection.  The Boston Red Sox selected pitcher Steve Nogosek at number-178.  Infielder Mark Karaviotis was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 569th choice.  The Seattle Mariners took outfielder Austin Grebeck with the 627th pick.

Portland's Hummel, Whalen Selected In MLB Draft

(Secaucus, NJ)  --  The Milwaukee Brewers selected a pair of Pilots in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.  Catcher Cooper Hummel was taken in the 18th round.  Outfielder Caleb Whalen was picked in the 38th round.  The duo was the first University of Portland players selected in the MLB draft since 2014.

Timbers Host Earthquakes

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers host the San Jose Earthquakes tomorrow night at Providence Park in a U.S. Open Cup match.  Portland returns to MLS action on the road against Real Salt Lake on Saturday.  The Timbers are in seventh in the Western Conference with a record of 5-6-and-4 and 19 points.

Nagbe, Team USA Advance in Copa America

(Philadelphia, PA)  --  Darlington Nagbe and Team USA have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa America Centenario.  Team USA will face Ecuador on Thursday at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.  The Americans downed Team Paraguay, 1-0, at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday.  Clint Dempsey scored the lone goal of the match for Team USA.

Rattlers Throttle Steel

(Phoenix, AZ)  --  The Arizona Rattlers throttled the Portland Steel, 76-49, in Phoenix on Saturday.  Portland dropped to 1-and-9 on the season with the loss.  The Steel return home to the Moda Center to open a four-game homestand which begins on Saturday.  Portland will host the Cleveland Gladiators, who are in second place in the National Conference with a record of 5-and-6.

Mariners Bow To Texas, 6-4

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners have today off, after losing two of three at home to Texas.  The Rangers held off the M's yesterday, 6-4, handing Seattle its eighth loss in its last 12 games.  Leonys Martin got his tenth home run of the year for the Mariners.  Seattle will begin a three-game series at Tampa Bay tomorrow.

Ducks Struggle In NCAA Tournament

(Eugene, OR)  --  The University of Oregon's women's track and field team is tied for 22nd place after their first day of competition at the NCAA Championships.  The Ducks scored four points but sit 22 points behind leader Arkansas.  The Oregon men's team leads the competition by a single point over Texas A&M, 19-18.

OSU's Ice Drafted By Indians

(Secaucus, NJ)  --  Oregon State baseball player Logan Ice has been selected by the Cleveland Indians with the 72nd pick of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft.  The junior catcher will have until July 15th to decided if he wants to sign with Cleveland or return to Oregon State for his senior season.  Ice was an All-Pac-12 first team selection this season for the Beavers.

Mexico Downs Taylor, Jamaica

(Pasadena, CA)  --  Timbers defender Jermaine Taylor and Team Jamaica dropped their second straight match of the Copa America Centenario.  Mexico blanked Jamaica, 2-nil, at the Rose Bowl.  Jamaica, which has been held scoreless in the tournament, will face Uruguay on Monday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Steel Seek Second Win

(Portland, OR)  --  The Steel will be in search of their second win of the season when they travel to Arizona to face the Rattlers tomorrow night.  Portland dropped its first eight games of the season before winning last week against Tampa Bay.  The Steel have allowed the second-most points in the league and scored the second-fewest.

Mariners Take Lewis In 1st Round Of MLB Draft

(Seattle, WA)  --  Baseball America's reigning college player of the year is the first player chosen by the Seattle Mariners in this year's Major League Baseball draft.  Kyle Lewis was picked eleventh overall out of Mercer University.  The center fielder hit .395 with 70 runs, eleven doubles, two triples, 20 homers, and 72 RBI this past season.

Mariners Lose To Cleveland, 5-3

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners will try to close in on first-place Texas when they host the Rangers in a three-game series starting tonight.  The M's lost last night to Cleveland, 5-3, to split that series at two games apiece.  Seattle got two home runs from Robinson Cano and one from Adam Lind.  The Mariners and Rangers will start play tonight at 7:10.

Portland's McCollum Added To USA Basketball Select Team

(Portland, OR)  --  Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum has named to the USA Basketball Select Team.  The 25-man team features some of the NBA's best young players.  The Select Team will scrimmage and train with the Men's National Team, which is preparing for the Olympics, during a four-day training camp in Las Vegas in July.

Ducks Top Leaderboard At NCAA Championships

(Eugene, OR)  --  The University of Oregon's men's track and field team sits atop the leaderboard at the NCAA Championships.  The Ducks, who are hosting the event at historic Hayward Field, have a three-point lead over second-place Arkansas.  The championships conclude on Saturday.

Timbers' Taylor To Face Mexico Today

(Pasadena, CA)  --  Timbers defender Jermaine Taylor will face Mexico today in the Copa America Centenario at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.  Taylor and Team Jamaica lost in the opening round to Venezuela, 1-nil.  Mexico defeated Uruguay in the opening round, 3-1.

Oregon's Hawkins Named Athlete Of The Year

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon pitcher Cheridan Hawkins has been named the Pac-12 Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  The three-time All-American led the conference with a 1.77 ERA this season.  The Ducks' softball season ended in the NCAA Super Regionals with a record of 48-and-10.

Steel DB Named Player Of The Week

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland's Sergio Gilliam has been named the Arena Football League Defensive Player of the Week.  The defensive back tallied six tackles and two interceptions in Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Storm in which Portland picked up its first win of the season.  The Steel return to action on Saturday as they travel to Phoenix to take on the Arizona Rattlers.

Mariners Blank Cleveland, 5-0

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners are gaining ground in the AL West after winning their second straight game over Cleveland, 5-0.  Taijuan Walker pitched eight shutout innings and struck out eleven for Seattle.  Chris Iannetta slammed two home runs for the Mariners.  Seattle and Cleveland will wrap up a four-game series tonight at Safeco Field.

Tinkle Signs Contract Extension With OSU

(Corvallis, OR)  --  It appears Oregon State head men's basketball coach Wayne Tinkle will be staying around for another couple of years in Corvallis.  The university announced Tinkle has signed a two-year contract extension, meaning he's now scheduled to coach through the 2021-22 season.  "The Oregonian" reported in March that Tinkle had verbally agreed to the extension after the Beavers' first-round loss to VCU in the NCAA Tournament.  Before that, Tinkle interviewed for the head-coaching vacancy at Stanford before withdrawing his name from consideration.

Despite "Oregon Blood," Thompson To Play In Olympics

(Cleveland, OH)  --  Warriors sharp shooter Klay Thompson says "mosquitoes love me. I grew up in Oregon."  Thompson says that will not keep him from playing in the Rio Olympics, but he is worried about the Zike virus.  Klay's dad, Mychal Thompson, was a Portland Trail Blazer from 1978 to 1986, and Thompson lived in Lake Oswego from ages two-to-14.

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  Former Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is getting a chance to play at the next level.  Mannion is working out with the Los Angeles Rams.  He has been sharing reps with top NFL Draft pick Jared Goff and veteran Case Keenum.

Mariners Snap Losing Streak, Defeat Cleveland

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners are hoping to build some new momentum after defeating Cleveland, 7-1.  Nelson Cruz clubbed two home runs last night to help the M's snap a four-game losing streak.  Wade Miley pitched seven solid innings to earn his sixth victory of the year.  Seattle and Cleveland will play the third game of their four-game series tonight at Safeco Field.

Lillard Releases New Track

Report: Finger Injury To Keep Former Blazer Aldridge Out Of Olympics

(San Antonio, TX)  --  USA Basketball won't have the services of former Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge this summer.  ESPN reports the Spurs' big man will miss the Rio Olympics due to a lingering finger injury.  The Summer Games are set to open Friday, August 5th.  Aldridge left Portland via free agency last offseason.

Oregon State's Ice Up For Honor

(Corvallis, OR)  --   Oregon State catcher Logan Ice is a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award.  The honor is given annually to the best catcher in college baseball.  Ice was named first team All-Pac-12, and hit .310 for the Beavers.

Mariners Fall To Cleveland

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners are on a four-game losing streak, after falling at home to Cleveland, 3-1.  The Mariners managed only five hits and struck out 14 times.  Starter James Paxton allowed three runs on five hits over six innings to get the loss.  Seattle and Cleveland will play again tonight.

Lynch Confirms He's Done

(Undated)  --  Marshawn Lynch says he's done.  As in he's "not playing football anymore."  With rampant rumors of Lynch considering coming back into the NFL after announcing his retirement earlier this year, the former Seahawks running back said in an interview on "Sports 60 Minutes" on Showtime he's retired from pro football.  The episode is slated to be shown tonight at six.

Timbers' Nagbe, Taylor Fall In Copa America

(Undated)  --  Portland's Darlington Nagbe and Jermaine Taylor each lost their opening round match of the Copa America Centenario.  Nagbe and Team USA lost to Colombia, 2-nil, at Levi's Stadium on Friday.  The U.S. will face Costa Rica tomorrow at Soldier Field.  Taylor and Jamaica fell to Venezuela, 1-nil, at Soldier Field yesterday.  Jamaica takes on Mexico at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.  The Timbers are off until Tuesday, June 14th when the San Jose Earthquakes visit Providence Park.
 

Steel Get First Win Of Season

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Steel picked up their first win of the season with a 68-35 victory over Tampa Bay at the Moda Center on Friday.  The 33-point win set the franchise record for the largest margin of victory.  Portland's defense forced seven turnovers, resulting in 40 points.  Wide Receiver Tyrone Goard was named the Offensive Player of the Game for hauling in four catches and scoring two touchdowns.  The Steel hit the road this weekend as they travel to Phoenix to take on the Arizona Rattlers on Saturday.

Texas Sweeps Mariners

(Arlington, TX)  --  The Seattle Mariners suddenly find themselves three games out of first in the AL West, after losing to Texas, 3-2.  The Rangers completed the sweep yesterday by scoring three fifth-inning runs.  Nelson Cruz got a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Mariners.  Seattle will be back home to host Cleveland for a four-game series, starting tonight.

Ducks Win National Championship

(Eugene, OR)  --  The University of Oregon's men's golf team has won its first ever national championship.  Sulman Raza's putt on the 21st hole clinched the title for the Ducks over the University of Texas.  The men's golf team becomes the third program in Oregon's history to win an NCAA championship.
 

Timbers Shake Earthquakes

(Portland, OR)  --  Liam Ridgewell scored the lone goal of the match as the Timbers downed the Earthquakes, 1-nil, at Providence Park.  Playing in his 100th regular season game with the Timbers, Diego Valeri notched an assist.  Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson earned his first career shutout in the win.  Portland is off until Tuesday, June 14th when it hosts the Earthquakes again at Providence Park.  The Timbers are 5-6-and-4 with 19 points.

Ducks' Softball Trio Named All-Americans

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Koral Costa, Nikki Udria and Cheridan Hawkins have been named All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.  Costa was a first team selection, Udria was a second team choice and Hawkins was a third team selection.  The Ducks' season ended on Sunday in the NCAA Super Regionals with a record of 48-and-10.

Tables Turn On Mariners In San Diego

(San Diego, CA)  --  After two wins over the Padres in Seattle, the Mariners are smarting from a 14-6 loss in San Diego.  Alexei Ramirez launched two home runs to help the Padres stop a four-game losing streak.  Seattle starter James Paxton was roughed up for eight runs on ten hits over three-and-two-thirds innings.  The Mariners and Padres will wrap up their series tonight in San Diego.

Trail Blazers Make Staff Moves

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers have made some moves on their coaching staff.  "The Oregonian" is reporting that Dale Osbourne has been promoted to the front of the bench and John McCullough has been promoted to assistant coach.  Portland is coming off a 44-and-38 season.

Timbers Host Earthquakes

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers get back to work tonight as they welcome the San Jose Earthquakes to Providence Park.  Portland was last in action Saturday, battling to a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire on the road.  The Timbers are 4-6-and-4 with 16 points so far this season, good for eighth place in the Western Conference.

A Pair Of Beavers Heading To Australia

(San Francisco, CA)  --  A pair of Oregon State men's basketball players are heading down under to represent the school and Pac-12 conference.  Beavers' Stephen Thompson Jr. and Drew Eubanks have been named to a team of 12 players from 10 schools will play two games against the Australian National Team in Melbourne and another against a team from the semi-pro South East Australian Basketball League.

Former Seahawk Thurmond Retiring From NFL

(Philadelphia, PA)  --  A former member of the Seattle Seahawks' vaunted "Legion of Boom" defense is retiring from the NFL.  Walter Thurmond confirmed the ESPN report in a tweet yesterday, saying he's leaving the game after only six seasons.  Thurmond, who was drafted by Seattle out of Oregon in 2010, was a member of the Super Bowl 48 champions and spent the past two seasons with the Giants and Eagles, respectively.  The "Philadelphia Daily News" reports Thurmond has aspired to be a film director and has been working on a documentary about recording artist Eddie Levert.

Oregon Golf Survives Bumpy Start In Match Play

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon golf survived a slow start to beat LSU 3-1-1 in the opening round of match play of the NCAA Championship at Eugene Country Club.  The win gave Oregon a 3-and-0 record in the quarterfinals in the three times it qualified for match play since the format was instituted in 2009.  Ducks will have to beat Illinois, who coasted to a 4-1-0 win over South Carolina.
