(Portland, OR)  --  The LA Galaxy edged the Timbers, 1-nil, in the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup at Providence Park.  Raul Mendiola's fifth-minute goal was the only score of the match.  Darlington Nagbe rejoined Portland after playing for the U.S. Men's National Team in the Copa America Centenario but was unable to find the net.  The Timbers return to MLS action on Monday when they travel to Colorado to face the Rapids.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers have extended qualifying offers to Allen Crabbe, Maurice Harkless and Meyers Leonard.  Portland now has the right to match any offers they receive from other teams.  All three players become restricted free agents tomorrow.

(Eugene, OR)  --  Michelle Tumolo has been named an assistant coach for Oregon's women's lacrosse team.  Tumolo will help coordinate the team's offense.  She previously was an assistant coach at Florida and Syracuse.  Tumolo is a member of the U.S. Women's National Team.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will host a four-game series with Baltimore after losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-1.  Sean Rodriguez drove in four runs to help Pittsburgh split the two-game series with Seattle.  Mariners starter Wade Miley picked up the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings.  The Mariners and Orioles will get started at Safeco Field tonight at 7:10.

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins and Daan Maasland have been awarded the Pac-12's Tom Hansen Conference Medal.  Hawkins concluded her Ducks' softball career as a three-time All-American.  Maasland helped lead the Ducks' men's tennis team to a number-34 ranking this past season.  The medals are "based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership."

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Caroline Inglis is set to make her LPGA Tour debut this weekend at the Portland Classic after receiving an exemption from the Tournament Golf Foundation.  Inglis is the Ducks' all-time scoring leader with an average of 72.21.  She won the Pac-12 individual golf title in 2015.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Mark Barnard has been named head coach of the Oregon State volleyball team.  Barnard spent the past 11 seasons as a member of the Beavers' volleyball staff.  He replaces former head coach Taras Liskevych, who retired last month.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Steel will try to get things turned around while on a bye this week.  Portland is 1-11 on the season, including a 59-38 loss to the Philadelphia Soul on Monday.  The Steel return to action on Saturday, July 9th when they host the Orlando Predators at the Moda Center.

(Beaverton, OR)  --  Sports apparel giant Nike is landing top NBA Draft pick Ben Simmons on a shoe deal.  Simmons signed a five-year, guaranteed 20-million-dollar contract earlier this month.  He visited with Nike reps last month after meeting with Adidas in Los Angeles.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners are back above .500, after beating Pittsburgh, 5-2.  Nelson Cruz got his 20th home run of the year for Seattle, which has won three of its last four games.  Hisashi Iwakuma earned his seventh victory of the year after allowing two runs on six hits over six-and-two-thirds innings.  The Mariners and Pirates will play again tonight at Safeco Field.

(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin will be staying in Seattle a while longer.  Baldwin has agreed to a four-year contract extension to keep him with the Seahawks through the 2020 season.  ESPN reports the deal averages more than eleven-million dollars per season and guarantees Baldwin 24-million.  Baldwin caught a career-high 78 passes for nearly eleven-hundred yards and 14 touchdowns in 2015.

(Hillsboro, OR)  --  Tyler Mark fired seven shutout innings as Hillsboro blanked Salem-Keizer 6-0 at Ron Tonkin Field.  Matt Railey drove in a pair of runs for the Hops, who snapped a three-game skid.  The series continues tonight.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Trail Blazers television broadcasting future remains very much up in the air.  The "Oregonian" reports the team has until 11:59 p.m. Thursday to ink a deal with a new television partner.  Potential suitors are in the running and competition remains "wide open."  The "Seattle Times" suggested the Blazers were leaving Comcast SportsNet Northwest, whom they have partnered with the last nine years, in favor of a new deal with ROOT Sports Northwest.  Team officials call those reports "untrue."

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers continue to add to their Las Vegas Summer League roster.  The "Oregonian" reports big man Jordan Bachynski and guard Russ Smith will join the squad.  Four players from last year's roster including Pat Connaughton, Cliff Alexander, Luis Montero and Noah Vonleh are all slated to play in Vegas this summer.  Second-round draft pick Jake Layman also will join the team.

(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks fans are happy to hear the team has announced the dates of 13 open training-camp practices.  They'll begin July 30th and end on August 26th, with each practice to be held at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.  Fans can register for tickets online beginning Thursday morning at ten at Seahawks.com.  Fans age 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers trailed by two goals at the half but rallied for a 3-2 win over the Dynamo at Providence Park on Sunday.  Lucas Melano put Portland on the board in the 64th minute.  Diego Valeri fired the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute and followed it up with the game-winning PK in stoppage time.  It was the first time in the team's MLS history that Portland has overcome a two-goal deficit to win a match.  The Timbers host the LA Galaxy on Wednesday night.

(Portland, OR)  --  Despite not having a pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, the Trail Blazers still are getting a player.  Portland has acquired the rights to forward Jake Layman from Orlando in exchange for a future second-round pick and cash considerations.  Layman was originally chosen by the Magic with the 47th overall selection.  He averaged over 10 points and four rebounds per game in four seasons at the University of Maryland.

(Eugene, OR)  --  University of Oregon distance runner Edward Cheserek has been named a finalist for the Bowerman award for the third consecutive year.  Cheserek is the only athlete to be named a three-time finalist for the Bowerman award, which is track and field's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.  The winner will be announced in December.

(Sisters, OR)  --  PSU golfer Krissy Peterson has won the Oregon Women's Amateur Championship.  She defeated Madison Odiorne of Washington State University in the semifinals and followed that up with a win over Gigi Stoll of the University of Arizona for the title.  With the win, Peterson becomes the first-ever Viking golfer to win the Oregon Amateur Championship.

(Portland, OR)  --  Former Portland rower Molly Templin has been nominated for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year award.  Templin earned All-Conference honors as a senior and helped lead the Pilots to a fourth-place finish at the 2016 West Coast Conference Rowing Championships.  She was also named a National Scholar Athlete by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association and selected to the WCC's All-Academic Team.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will have the day off after winning two of three against St. Louis.  The Cardinals hit six home runs yesterday to defeat Seattle, 11-6.  Nelson Cruz and Franklin Gutierrez each hit a solo homer for the Mariners.  Seattle is set to play two games at home against Pittsburgh, starting tomorrow night.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Steel will be in search of their second win of the season when they host the Philadelphia Soul tonight at the Moda Center.  Portland is 1-and-10 on the year.  Philadelphia is 9-and-3.  The Steel made a pair of roster moves over the weekend, placing defensive back Arness Ikner on injured reserve and activating wide receiver Nick Truesdell from the injured reserve.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers Army will no longer be singing or promoting a controversial chant that some fans called offensive to women.  The fan base is removing "Portland Boys" chant from its website.  Chant sheets distributed at matches will no longer include the chant and the Timbers Army will no longer lead the singing of the chant at matches as well. 

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State head baseball coach Pat Casey isn't going anywhere.  Casey says he was offered the Texas position following an interview, but he turned down the job the next morning.  The Oregon-native just completed his 22nd season at OSU, and could receive a bump to his 3.3-million-dollar annual salary. 

(Brooklyn, NY)  --  The 2016 NBA Draft is tomorrow at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.  The Trail Blazers do not own a draft pick.  The Nuggets acquired the Blazers first round selection, which is 19th overall.  Portland's second round pick went to the Chicago Bulls via the Cleveland Cavaliers.

(Portland, OR)  --  Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum is getting a summer gig.  McCollum is participating in a week-long internship with The Player's Tribune.  He will assist The Players' Tribune editorial team in covering the upcoming NBA draft, interviewing top draft picks and getting a one-on-one sit down with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.  

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Timbers have no interest in transferring striker Fanendo Adi to the Mexican side Tigres.  Adi's representatives told Goal.com that he is looking to move to a stronger league.  The "Oregonian" reports the Timbers won't be engaging Tigres on their offer for the 25-year-old.  

(Portland, OR)  --  The Cleveland Gladiators downed the Portland Steel, 58-49, at the Moda Center on Saturday.  Portland quarterback Shane Austin threw for 291 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions in the loss.  The Steel dropped to 1-and-10 on the season.  Portland returns to action on Monday, June 27th, when it hosts the Philadelphia Soul. 

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon women's basketball team has signed Sabrina Ionescu [[ yah-ness-coo ]], the "USA Today" National Player of the Year.  Ionescu averaged over 25 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals as a high school senior.  According to ESPN, she is the fourth-ranked incoming freshman in the country. 

(Portland, OR)  --  Kevin Calabro has been named the new television play-by-play voice of the Portland Trail Blazers.  Calabro is not a stranger to the NBA.  He previously spent 21 years as the play-by-play voice of the Seattle SuperSonics prior to the team moving to Oklahoma City.  Calabro has also worked for ESPN, TBS, NBA TV, and Westwood One Radio. 

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Stephen Nogosek has been named a second team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.  Nogosek finished the season with a 1.11 ERA and a 2-and-2 record.  He led the Pac-12 with 16 saves.  

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon track and field teams have been named the programs of the year.  The men's team received the John McDonnell Program of the Year Award for the fifth time in eight years.  The Oregon women's team won its eighth straight Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award.

(Portland, OR)  --  Blazers guard Damian Lillard was non-committal when asked about playing for Team USA in the 2016 Summer Olympics.  The "Philippine Star" reports Lillard said he hadn't thought about playing in Rio this summer.  Point guards Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and John Wall have already bowed out of the Rio Games, leaving a hole at the point guard spot.  Team USA will hold a training camp next month in Las Vegas.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Blazers are revamping their television and radio broadcasts after firing Mike Barrett, Mike Rice and Antonio Harvey.  Barrett was the team's lead TV announcer and Rice was the team's TV commentator.  Both had been with Blazers for 15-plus years.  Harvey has served as a radio analyst for 11 years after playing for Portland from 1999-2001.  Blazers' CEO Chris McGowan says the team is undergoing a nationwide search for their replacements.
 

(Sandy, UT)  --  The Portland Timbers return to MLS action on Saturday with a road game against Real Salt Lake.  The Timbers have 19 points in the standings, one behind San Jose for sixth place in the Western Conference.  The Timbers hope to clinch their first road win.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Oregon Ducks men's basketball team will host the University of Nevada-Las Vegas at the Moda Center on December 17th.  The Ducks fell to UNLV last year, 80-69 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.  It'll be Oregon's first game in Portland since 2013.

(St. Petersburg, FL)  --  The Seattle Mariners are in the middle of a four-game losing streak, with their latest setback being a 3-2 decision in 13 innings to Tampa Bay.  A bases-loaded walk in the 13th allowed the winning run to cross the plate for the Rays.  Nelson Cruz got a two-run homer in the 4th inning for Seattle.  The two teams will wrap up their three-game series later today.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State first baseman KJ Harrison is getting a chance to represent his country.  Harrison has accepted an invitation to join the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team over the summer.  This is the second consecutive season in which Harrison will play for Team USA, joining freshman second baseman Nick Madrigal on the squad.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  It appears Oregon State head men's basketball coach Wayne Tinkle will be staying around for another couple of years in Corvallis.  The university announced Tinkle has signed a two-year contract extension, meaning he's now scheduled to coach through the 2021-22 season.  "The Oregonian" reported in March that Tinkle had verbally agreed to the extension after the Beavers' first-round loss to VCU in the NCAA Tournament.  Before that, Tinkle interviewed for the head-coaching vacancy at Stanford before withdrawing his name from consideration.

(Cleveland, OH)  --  Warriors sharp shooter Klay Thompson says "mosquitoes love me. I grew up in Oregon."  Thompson says that will not keep him from playing in the Rio Olympics, but he is worried about the Zike virus.  Klay's dad, Mychal Thompson, was a Portland Trail Blazer from 1978 to 1986, and Thompson lived in Lake Oswego from ages two-to-14.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The University of Oregon is hosting the 2016 Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field beginning today.  The Ducks will have 32 participants, comprised of 17 men and 15 women.  The Oregon men's team is ranked fourth in the nation, and the women's team is number-three.  The championships run through Saturday.
 

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  Former Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is getting a chance to play at the next level.  Mannion is working out with the Los Angeles Rams.  He has been sharing reps with top NFL Draft pick Jared Goff and veteran Case Keenum.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners are hoping to build some new momentum after defeating Cleveland, 7-1.  Nelson Cruz clubbed two home runs last night to help the M's snap a four-game losing streak.  Wade Miley pitched seven solid innings to earn his sixth victory of the year.  Seattle and Cleveland will play the third game of their four-game series tonight at Safeco Field.

(Portland, OR)  --  Another Monday in the books, and another rap track from Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard.  The Blazers All-Star released "Isley," as for the second straight offseason Lillard is releasing a new track every Monday.  Last week he dropped "Talk to Em."

(San Antonio, TX)  --  USA Basketball won't have the services of former Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge this summer.  ESPN reports the Spurs' big man will miss the Rio Olympics due to a lingering finger injury.  The Summer Games are set to open Friday, August 5th.  Aldridge left Portland via free agency last offseason.

(Corvallis, OR)  --   Oregon State catcher Logan Ice is a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award.  The honor is given annually to the best catcher in college baseball.  Ice was named first team All-Pac-12, and hit .310 for the Beavers.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seattle Mariners are on a four-game losing streak, after falling at home to Cleveland, 3-1.  The Mariners managed only five hits and struck out 14 times.  Starter James Paxton allowed three runs on five hits over six innings to get the loss.  Seattle and Cleveland will play again tonight.

(Undated)  --  Marshawn Lynch says he's done.  As in he's "not playing football anymore."  With rampant rumors of Lynch considering coming back into the NFL after announcing his retirement earlier this year, the former Seahawks running back said in an interview on "Sports 60 Minutes" on Showtime he's retired from pro football.  The episode is slated to be shown tonight at six.

(Undated)  --  Portland's Darlington Nagbe and Jermaine Taylor each lost their opening round match of the Copa America Centenario.  Nagbe and Team USA lost to Colombia, 2-nil, at Levi's Stadium on Friday.  The U.S. will face Costa Rica tomorrow at Soldier Field.  Taylor and Jamaica fell to Venezuela, 1-nil, at Soldier Field yesterday.  Jamaica takes on Mexico at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.  The Timbers are off until Tuesday, June 14th when the San Jose Earthquakes visit Providence Park.
 

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Steel picked up their first win of the season with a 68-35 victory over Tampa Bay at the Moda Center on Friday.  The 33-point win set the franchise record for the largest margin of victory.  Portland's defense forced seven turnovers, resulting in 40 points.  Wide Receiver Tyrone Goard was named the Offensive Player of the Game for hauling in four catches and scoring two touchdowns.  The Steel hit the road this weekend as they travel to Phoenix to take on the Arizona Rattlers on Saturday.

(Arlington, TX)  --  The Seattle Mariners suddenly find themselves three games out of first in the AL West, after losing to Texas, 3-2.  The Rangers completed the sweep yesterday by scoring three fifth-inning runs.  Nelson Cruz got a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Mariners.  Seattle will be back home to host Cleveland for a four-game series, starting tonight.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The University of Oregon's men's golf team has won its first ever national championship.  Sulman Raza's putt on the 21st hole clinched the title for the Ducks over the University of Texas.  The men's golf team becomes the third program in Oregon's history to win an NCAA championship.
 

(Portland, OR)  --  Liam Ridgewell scored the lone goal of the match as the Timbers downed the Earthquakes, 1-nil, at Providence Park.  Playing in his 100th regular season game with the Timbers, Diego Valeri notched an assist.  Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson earned his first career shutout in the win.  Portland is off until Tuesday, June 14th when it hosts the Earthquakes again at Providence Park.  The Timbers are 5-6-and-4 with 19 points.

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's Koral Costa, Nikki Udria and Cheridan Hawkins have been named All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.  Costa was a first team selection, Udria was a second team choice and Hawkins was a third team selection.  The Ducks' season ended on Sunday in the NCAA Super Regionals with a record of 48-and-10.

(San Diego, CA)  --  After two wins over the Padres in Seattle, the Mariners are smarting from a 14-6 loss in San Diego.  Alexei Ramirez launched two home runs to help the Padres stop a four-game losing streak.  Seattle starter James Paxton was roughed up for eight runs on ten hits over three-and-two-thirds innings.  The Mariners and Padres will wrap up their series tonight in San Diego.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers have made some moves on their coaching staff.  "The Oregonian" is reporting that Dale Osbourne has been promoted to the front of the bench and John McCullough has been promoted to assistant coach.  Portland is coming off a 44-and-38 season.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers get back to work tonight as they welcome the San Jose Earthquakes to Providence Park.  Portland was last in action Saturday, battling to a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire on the road.  The Timbers are 4-6-and-4 with 16 points so far this season, good for eighth place in the Western Conference.

(San Francisco, CA)  --  A pair of Oregon State men's basketball players are heading down under to represent the school and Pac-12 conference.  Beavers' Stephen Thompson Jr. and Drew Eubanks have been named to a team of 12 players from 10 schools will play two games against the Australian National Team in Melbourne and another against a team from the semi-pro South East Australian Basketball League.

(Philadelphia, PA)  --  A former member of the Seattle Seahawks' vaunted "Legion of Boom" defense is retiring from the NFL.  Walter Thurmond confirmed the ESPN report in a tweet yesterday, saying he's leaving the game after only six seasons.  Thurmond, who was drafted by Seattle out of Oregon in 2010, was a member of the Super Bowl 48 champions and spent the past two seasons with the Giants and Eagles, respectively.  The "Philadelphia Daily News" reports Thurmond has aspired to be a film director and has been working on a documentary about recording artist Eddie Levert.

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon golf survived a slow start to beat LSU 3-1-1 in the opening round of match play of the NCAA Championship at Eugene Country Club.  The win gave Oregon a 3-and-0 record in the quarterfinals in the three times it qualified for match play since the format was instituted in 2009.  Ducks will have to beat Illinois, who coasted to a 4-1-0 win over South Carolina.
