High School Sports

Week-5 of High School Football under the Friday Night Lights…2nd ranked Summit and Mt. View clash on the eastside of Bend tonight. Summit looks to go to 3-0 in league play while the Cougars seek their first IMC win.

4th ranked and unbeaten Bend entertains Ridgeview. The Lava Bears one of 5 undefeated teams in the State with a 4-0 record. Elsewhere, Redmond travels to Pendleton.

In the 4-A Tri Valley League…Sisters plays at Cottage Grove with first place on the line. In the Tri-Valley, Madras makes its third straight trip as the White Buffs travel to Estacada and winless Crook County plays a
non-league game at Woodburn.

La Pine is at Glide, Culver at Stanfield, and Gilchrist plays at Triad. (try-ad)

In High School Volleyball last night, 12th ranked Mt. View swept Redmond in 3 games…Crook County is now undefeated at 17-0 with its straight set win over Estacada while Madras outlasts Molalla 3-2. 3rd ranked Sisters swept Cottage Grove 3-zip, and Glide blanks La Pine 3-to-nothing.

NFL

Bud Light Thursday Night Football from Cincy where the Bengals beat the Dolphins, 22-7. Sunday morning, the Seahawks are in New York to meet the Jets in a 10am kickoff on Fox.  And, at 130pm Sunday, the 49-ers host the Cowboys.

NCAAF

College football last night…6th ranked Houston ups its record to 5-0 with an easy 42-14 win over Connecticut.

Tonight in Seattle the 10th ranked and 4-and-oh Washington Huskies welcome 7th ranked Stanford (3-0) in a key Pac-12 north division show down. It’s a 6pm kickoff on ESPN and the Dawgs are favored by 3-1/2 points.

Tomorrow night, The Ducks will seek revenge here on FM News-100/1110 KBND when Oregon travels to Pullman, Washington to battle the Cougs of Washington State. We have the pregame Show beginning at 430pm and kickoff at 630p in the Palouse. {Duck Game Day Stop at ??}

Oregon State heads to Boulder and faces Colorado in an 1130am kickoff on the Pac-12 Networks. Elsewhere…18th rated Utah plays Cal in Berkeley at 3pm. USC entertains Arizona State in a 530p kickoff in So-Cal, and UCLA hosts Arizona at 730pm.

Major Leagues

From the big league diamond…this weekend wraps up league play and the Seattle Mariners host the A’s for the final 4-games. Last night the Mariners edge the A’s, 3-2…The M’s 2 games out of a playoff spot.

Meantime…In the National League, The Giants beat the Rockies 7-2. San Francisco is 1-game behind the Mets for the top Wildcard spot, and 1-game ahead of the Cardinals for the 2nd and final spot. The Giants close out the season hosting the Dodgers starting tonight for a weekend series and marking the end of the incredible broadcasting career of Dodger Announcer Vin Scully who will retire after 67-years.

Portland's Leonard Ahead Of Schedule

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers might be getting big man Meyers Leonard back sooner than initially thought.  Leonard underwent surgery on April 8th to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, with an expected recovery time of six-to-eight months.  The fifth-year power forward is ahead of schedule in his recovery and is hoping to be cleared for Portland's preseason game against the Lakers on October 11th.
 

Mariners Defeat Oakland, 3-2

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners are winners of four of their last five games after defeating Oakland, 3-2.  Mike Zunino homered in the seventh inning and Seattle was able to hold off the A's to win.  The Mariners remain two games back of Baltimore in the AL Wild Card race.  Seattle and Oakland will play the second game of their four-game series tonight at Safeco Field.

Ducks Favored Over Washington State

(Pullman, WA)  --  The Oregon Ducks will try to bounce back from two straight losses when they play Washington State tomorrow evening in Pullman.  The Ducks are seven-and-a-half-point favorites against the Cougars.  Oregon is two-and-two on the season, and Wazzu is one-and-two after having a bye last week.  Kickoff tomorrow is set for 6:30 p.m., pre-game starts at 4:30 on KBND.

Rapids Host Timbers

(Commerce City, CO)  --  The Timbers hope to regain the final playoff spot in the Western Conference tomorrow night when Portland takes on the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.  The Timbers are seventh in the West with 41 points at 11-12-and-8.  Despite being tied with Seattle at 41 points each, the Sounders hold the final playoff spot over Portland as a result of winning one more game on the season.

High School Sports

On the High School hardwood in Volleyball action tonight, 12 ranked Mt. View hosts Redmond…in the 4-A Tri Valley League, Top rated Crook County hits the road to Estacada and will try to make it 17 straight wins in a row without a loss. Madras entertains Molalla. 3rd ranked Sisters, 14-2, hosts Cottage Grove. In the 3-A division, La Pine travels to Glide, and

Moving outdoors…7th ranked Summit boys soccer team hosts Ridgeview today at 3pm. Third ranked Sisters is on the road at Cottage Grove for a 6pm match on the field turf under the lights. Madras, ranked 5th in the State travels to Corbett, and Crook County hosts Gladstone.

On the Girls side…3rd ranked Summit takes on Ridgeview in 5-A action. From the 4-A ranks, Sisters hosts Cottage Grove, and Madras greets Corbett, while Crook County travels to Gladstone.
 

NFL

Bud Light Thursday Night Football from Cincy tonight with a pair of 0-and-2 teams facing off. The Bengals greet the Miami Dolphins in a 530pm kickoff televised on the NFL Network.

NCAAF

There’s college football action tonight when 6th ranked Houston hosts Connecticut. The Cougars try to improve to a 5-and-oh start with a 5pm kickoff against the Huskies on ESPN-Tv.

Tomorrow night, all eyes will be on Seattle when the 10th ranked Washington Huskies welcome 7th ranked Stanford in a key Pac-12 north division show down. It’s a 6pm kickoff on ESPN and the Dawgs are favored by 3-1/2 points.

Trail Blazers To Modernize Team Brand

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers will be getting a new look next year.  Team president Chris McGowan confirmed earlier this week that the Blazers will see changes to both their uniforms and team logo in spring 2017.  Portland last updated its branding in 2002 when the Blazers added a black background and silver coloring to its logo.

Moving on to big league baseball…it’s down to the final 4-games of the regular season and the Seattle Mariners are still 2-games away from grabbing the 2nd American League Wildcard playoff spot.
The Mariners are 1-game behind the Tigers for that spot as both The M’s and Detroit won last night.

Seattle smashed the Astros in Houston, 12-4 and Detroit doubled up Cleveland, 6-3. The Mariners welcome the A’s to Safeco Field tonight for a season ending 4-game set. The Tigers host Cleveland.

Boston clinched the A-L East last night.

Meantime…In the National League, The Giants were shutout by the Rockies last night, 2-zip. SF loses a half-game ground on the N-L Wildcard chase. The Giants close out a series with Colorado tonight before hosting the Dodgers over the weekend.

Rapids Host Timbers

(Commerce City, CO)  --  The Timbers head to Denver to take on the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.  Portland is coming off a 2-1 win over C.D. Dragon in CONCACAF Champions League play on Tuesday night.  The Timbers are seventh in the West with 41 points at 11-12-and-8.  Colorado is second in the West with 48 points at 12-5-and-12.

College Football Preview

(Undated)  --  The Ducks and Beavers both hit the road on Saturday in Pac-12 conference play.  Oregon travels to Pullman for a matchup with Washington State, and the Beavers battle the Buffaloes in Boulder.  Oregon is 2-and-2, while OSU is 1-and-2.  Meanwhile, Portland State hosts Idaho State in the Vikings Big Sky conference home opener.  PSU is 1-and-3.

OSU Names Vydra Interim Director Of Athletics

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State University has named Marianne Vydra the interim athletics director.  The Beavers are conducting a national search to find a replacement for Todd Stansbury, who announced last week he was leaving OSU for the athletic director position at Georgia Tech University.  Vydra currently is the deputy director of athletics for administration at Oregon State.
 

Seahawks Sign Running Back C.J. Spiller

(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks are looking to shore up depth at running back by signing veteran C. J. Spiller.  Spiller, who was a first-round pick by Buffalo in 2010, was released by the Saints earlier this month.  Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise are out with injuries, and Spiller is being brought in to complement Christine Michael and Alex Collins in the running back corps.

Mariners Club Astros, 12-4

(Houston, TX)  --  The Mariners remain in the thick of the AL Wild Card race after a 12-4 victory over the Astros in Houston.  Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager each hit three-run homers for Seattle, which has won five of its last seven.  James Paxton struck out eight batters in picking up the victory.  The Mariners will close out their regular season at home against Oakland with a four-game series starting tonight.

High School Sports

On the High School hardwood in Volleyball action…some of the best ball being played in the State right here in our back yard as the 2nd ranked Bend Lady Lava Bears swept the Ravens at Ridgeview last night to improve to 8-and 3 overall and maintain a half-game lead over Summit for the IMC lead. The Storm blanked Redmond in 3 games on the Panthers home court.

In class 4-A action…#1 rated Crook County is on a roll again this year and ups its record to 16-and-oh with a straight set win at Madras. And, second-ranked Sisters sweeps 3 in Junction City.

Meantime…2nd ranked Culver improves to 14-and-1 with a 3-0 win on the road at Stanfield.

Moving outdoors…7th ranked Summit boys soccer team shutout Redmond-Culver 8-zip and Bend-Ridgeview played to a scoreless tie.

Today, Redmond-Culver plays at Mt. View.

In the 4A ranks…third rated Sisters scored a 2-zip win over Junction City, Madras blanks Gladstone 3-to-nothing and Molalla runs by Crook County, 7-0.

In Girls soccer matches yesterday, Number Two ranked Summit improves to 6-0 with its huge 11-zip win over Redmond-Culver, and 4th ranked Bend out kicks Ridgeview, 2-to-nothing.
 

Major Leagues

Moving on to big league baseball…The Houston Astros come from behind to jump on Seattle starting pitcher Felix Hernandez, coupled by some errors, for a 6-run 6th inning, and the Stros double up the Mariners, 8-4.
Hernandez with only 3 strikeouts on the night suffers his 7th loss against 11-wins.

Seattle is still 2-games out of the second Wildcard playoff spot, but now 1-game behind the Tigers for that spot. Seattle closes out the road trip with a day game in Houston then returns to close out the regular season hosting the A’s beginning tomorrow night. The Tigers host Cleveland the next two games, and finish with a 3-game series in Atlanta.

Toronto and Baltimore sit in the driver’s seat for the 2 Amerian League Wildcard draws.

Meantime..In the National League, The Mets keep their thin Wildcard lead over both the Giants and the Cardinals with a 12-1 win over the Marlins. SF crushes the Rockies, 12-3. The Giants host Colorado for two more games, then finish the weekend entertaining the Dodgers. The Cardinals square off with the Reds the next two games, and close out hosting the Pirates over the weekend.

Timbers Take Down CDC Dragon

(San Miguel, El Salvador)  --  Darlington Nagbe's goal in the 90th minute gave the Portland Timbers a 2-1 win over CDC Dragon in CONCACAF Champions League play.  Portland faces Deportivo Saprissa in its final group stage match October 19th.  The Timbers return to MLS play on Saturday at the Colorado Rapids.
 

Garretson Taking First-Team Reps For Beavers

(Corvallis, OR)  --  After not playing in the second half last week, Darell Garretson is back taking reps with Oregon State's first-team offense.  Garretson suffered a leg injury and gave way to walk-on freshman Conor Blount.  The Beavers look to bounce from last week's loss against Pac-12 foe, Colorado.

Blazers Continue Training Camp

(Tualatin, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers continue training camp from Tualatin.  The Blazers open the preseason slate on October 11th on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers.  Portland opens the regular season at home against Utah October 25th.

Cardinals Release Former PSU Player Canaday

(Tempe, AZ)  --  The Arizona Cardinals are releasing former Portland State football player Kameron Canaday.  The long-snapper was released following two crucial botched snaps in the first three games.  He went undrafted out of PSU before signing with the Cardinals this offseason.

Thorns' Long Named NWSL POTW

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland Thorns midfielder Allie Long is the NWSL Player of the Week.  Long scored six goals over the final five games of the regular season.  Portland will play host to the Western New York Flash in the 2016 Playoffs on Sunday.
 

Brooks Signed To Seahawks' Practice Squad

(Renton, WA)  --  Running back Zac Brooks is again a Seattle Seahawk, having been signed to the team's practice squad.  The Hawks are looking to add depth at running back, with Thomas Rawls expected to be out for several more weeks with a cracked bone in his fibula.  There was no announcement yesterday on quarterback Russell Wilson, which indicates he may play Sunday against the Jets after suffering a knee injury last week against San Francisco.

Halfway through the High School Volleyball season and tonight two matches in Redmond where the Lady Panthers host Summit, and Ridgeview entertains #2 rated Bend.

On the 4-A hardwood tonight…top ranked and 15-and-oh Crook County is at Madras while 2nd ranked Sisters travels to Junction City.

Meantime…2nd ranked Culver guns for a 14-and-1 record with a road match at Stanfield this evening.

Bud Light Monday night football from The Big Easy in New Orleans last night saw the Atlanta Falcons hand the Saints their third straight defeat to start the year with a 45-32 win.

Coming up Thursday night…a pair of 1-and-2 teams meet up in Cincy when the Bengals greet the Miami Dolphins in a 530p kickoff on the NFL Network.

Plenty of movement in this week’s College football rankings by the Associated Press…but it’s still Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Louisville and Michigan the top-5.

Then AP has Houston, Stanford 7th…Wisconsin, Texas A & M, and the Huskies make up the top-10.

Nebraska, now 4-and-oh coached by former OSU head Coach Mike Riley rises to number-15, and Utah of the Pac-12 moves up to number-18 after its win over USC.

LSU, Oklahoma and Iowa all fall out of the top-25.

Moving on to big league baseball…The Mariners grab another road win, this one last night in Houston and in 11-innings as Seattle beats the Astros, 4-3.

The M’s are tied with the Tigers just 2-games out of the last American League Wildcard playoff spot behind the Orioles. Seattle sends 11-game winner Felix Hernandez to the mound tonight in Houston in Game-2 of that series.

In the National League, The Giants enjoyed yesterday off and are back home tonight to host the Rockies. SF holds a 1-game lead over the Cardinals for the final National League Wildcard playoff spot.

Carroll Not Guaranteeing Wilson Will Play Against Jets

(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll isn't saying for certain whether quarterback Russell Wilson will play Sunday against the Jets.  Carroll says Wilson is doing "remarkably well" after having suffered a sprained MCL in the third quarter of Sunday's win over the 49ers.  But the coach also says how Wilson responds this week to practice and rehab will be key to whether he plays this weekend.  Running back Thomas Rawls, meanwhile, will be out for several more weeks because of a cracked bone in his left fibula.

Blazers Tip Training Camp

(Tualatin, OR)  --  The Portland Trail Blazers tip training camp today from the team's training facility in Tualatin.  The Blazers open the preseason on October 11th on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers.  Portland earned a playoff spot last season with a 44-and-38 record.

Oregon, Oregon State Look To Bounce Back

(Undated)  --  Oregon and Oregon State will each look to bounce back this week following losses.  The Ducks fell to Colorado, while the Beavers lost to Boise State.  Oregon will visit Washington State, and OSU visits Colorado.

Timbers Meet C.D. Dragon Tonight

(San Miguel, El Salvador)  --  The Portland Timbers meet C.D. Dragon tonight in El Salvador.  The two teams meet for a CONCACAF Champions League matchup.  A victory or draw for the Timbers would set up a winner-take-all group stage finale on October 18th at Providence Park.  Opening kick from El Salvador at 6:00.
 

High School Sports

Week-4 of Prep football under the Friday Night Lights and we recap the winners and losers…first, 2nd Summit notches a 27-14 on the road at 7th ranked Hermiston while 6th ranked Bend improves to 4-and-0 with its 42-12 win at Hood River. Redmond pounded Mt. View, 56-28 and in a game that saw 5-lead changes, Pendleton outlasts Ridgeview, 29-25.

In 4A action…Sisters hammered Sutherlin 44-zip, Estacada outscores Crook County 47-12 and Molalla mauled Madas 55-to nothing. La Pine scored its first League win in 5 years with a 24-8 over Oakridge in the 3A ranks. Culver ran past Vernonia 40-to-8, and Gilchrist tags North Lake with a 78-20 loss

NCAAF

LSU knocked off by Auburn Saturday, 18-13 fired head coach Les Miles yesterday after 12-plus seasons. The ‘Mad Hatter’ as he was known won one National Title and lost another and has a career 114-34 record in Baton Rouge making him the 16th winningest coach in S-E-C history. Former USC interim Head Coach, Ed Orgeron (orge-err-on), takes over.

Meantime, there are rumblings in Eugene that may cost Oregon Coach Mark Helfrich his job soon, too, if things don’t change after the Ducks suffered their 2nd straight loss Saturday falling to Colorado, 41-38.

Oregon hasn’t lost two in a row since 2007 and the Duck defense gave up 600-plus yards in total offense to the Buffaloes. It was Colorado’s first win in Eugene since 1967. The Ducks, 2-2, head to Pullman Saturday to face 1-and-2 Washington State Saturday night at 630pm.

Elsewhere...Boise State defeated the Beavers 38-24. Stanford escapes the Rose Bowl with a 22-13 win over UCLA. The Huskies beat Arizona 35-28. Arizona State upsets Cal, 51-41 and Utah rallied for a 31-17 win over USC Friday night.

Moving on to big league baseball…The Mariners win 2 out of 3 in Minnesota this past weekend to keep alive in the Wildcard playoff race. Seattle begins a 3-game series in Houston tonight just 2-1/2 games out of the 2nd and final Playoff spot in the American League.
 
In the National League, The Giants have today off then host the Rockies tomorrow holding a one-half game lead over the Cardinals for the last National League Wildcard playoff position. The Dodgers clinch the West pennant with a 4-3 win over the Rockies in 10-innings yesterday.

NFL

From the NFL yesterday….in Seattle the Seahawks jumped on Chip Kelly’s 49-ers early and go on to 38-17 win over San Francisco. Seattle, 2-1, heads to New York to meet the Jets Sunday morning, and the Niners drop to 1-and-2 and host the Cowboys Sunday afternoon.

Trail Blazers Open Training Camp

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers open training camp this week.  The team will hold its annual media day today with training camp officially beginning tomorrow.  The team's preseason opener is against the Utah Jazz on Monday, October 3rd at the Moda Center.  The Blazers will be looking to improve on last year's 44-win season.

Dynamo Down Timbers

(Houston, TX)  --  The Houston Dynamo jumped out to a one-nil halftime lead en route to a 3-1 win over the Timbers at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday night.  Diego Valeri scored the lone goal for Portland, which dropped to 11-12-and-8 on the season.  The Timbers are sixth in the Western Conference with 41 points.  Portland travels to El Salvador tomorrow night for a CONCACAF Champions League matchup against C.D. Dragon.

Buffaloes Edge Ducks

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon dropped its second straight game of the season as the Ducks fell to Colorado, 41-38, at Autzen Stadium on Saturday.  Oregon rallied from a 33-17 second-half deficit but came up short in the final minute when Dakota Prukop's pass was intercepted in the end zone.  Prukop threw for 293 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.  Tony Brooks-James led the ground attack with 120 yards and a touchdown.  The 2-and-2 Ducks will take on Washington State on Saturday in Pullman.

Vikings Lose Third Straight

(Cedar City, UT)  --  The Vikings committed five turnovers in a 45-31 loss to Southern Utah on Saturday.  Quarterback Alex Kuresa provided the majority of the offense for PSU, rushing for 133 yards and a touchdown and passing for 264 yards and two scores.  The Vikings have lost three straight to drop to 1-and-3 on the season.  Portland State hosts Idaho State on Saturday at Providence Park.

Beavers Fall To Broncos

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Boise State jumped out to a 31-7 halftime lead en route to a 38-24 win over the Beavers at Reser Stadium on Saturday.  Freshman quarterback Conor Blount rallied the team in the second half, but it wasn't enough.  He finished with 138 yards on 11 completions.  Ryan Nall led the ground attack with 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Oregon State travels to Boulder to face Colorado on Saturday.  The Beavers are 1-and-2 on the season.

We start with High School Volleyball where it was a night of shutouts last night as 4TH ranked Bend improved to 7-and-3 by blanking 8th ranked, and defending 5A Champion Summit 3-zip, and Mt. View sweeps Ridgeview in 3-sets

In the 4A ranks…2nd ranked Crook County is now unbeaten in 12-matches after shutting down Gladstone 3-games to none. And, on the down side, Madras was swept by Gladstone in 3-games. Elsewhere, Creswell takes La Pine 3-zip, and Culver crumbles Pilot Rock 3-nill.

2nd ranked Summit travels to meet #7 Hermiston…the 6th rated Bend Lava Bears play at Hood River. Redmond hosts Mt. View, and the Ridgeview Ravens greet Pendleton.

Stansbury Departs OSU For Georgia Tech

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State's athletic department is in need of a new leader.  Todd Stansbury, the vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics at OSU, has accepted the Athletic Director position at Georgia Tech University.  Stansbury had been at Oregon State since August 2015.  It was his second stint with the Beavers.  He previously worked for OSU from 2003 to 2012.  Stansbury graduated from Georgia Tech in 1984.

College Football Roundup

On the grid iron, The Beavers host Boise State tomorrow at Reser Stadium at 12:30 televised on Fox Sports One. The 1-and-1 Beavers will try to give the 2-and-0 Broncos their first loss of the year.

The Oregon Ducks open Pac-12 play against the Colorado Buffaloes tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at Autzen Stadium. Both teams are 2-and-1 on the season.  We’ll serve up the pregame show at 12:30pm on the home of the Ducks, FM News 100 / 1110 KBND.

Tonight, 24th ranked Utah, 3-0, entertains 1-and-2 USC.

Last night 5th ranked Clemson dominated Georgia Tech, 26-7. Clemson improves to 4-and-0.

Portland State will look to end a two-game losing streak when it opens Big Sky Conference play on the road against Southern Utah tomorrow night.  The Vikings are 1-and-2 on the season, while the Thunderbirds are 1-and-1.

Moving on to big league baseball…The Mariners are in Minnesota for a weekend series with the Twins. Seattle is 2-games out of a Wildcard playoff spot with 10-games to go.
 
In the National League, The Giants edge the Padres 2-to-1.San Francisco tied with the Mets for a Wildcard spot and the Cardinals a half-game back.

NPRA Rodeo

Finally…The Northwest Professional Rodeo Association Finals begin tonight in Prineville 7pm at the Fairgrounds. Saturday’s finals also at 7:00 p.m.

Dynamo Host Timbers

(Houston, TX)  --  The Houston Dynamo host the Timbers tomorrow night at BBVA Compass Stadium.  Portland is fifth in the Western Conference with 41 points at 11-11-and-8.  The Dynamo are last in the West with 29 points at 6-11-and-11.  The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m.

Wilson Says Ankle "Feeling Better"

(Renton, WA)  --  Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson says he's feeling better this week as he recovers from the high ankle sprain he suffered in the Miami game.  Wilson says he was battling through pain last week in the Seahawks' loss to the Rams.  The team continues to prepare for their game Sunday against the 49ers at CenturyLink Field.

Mariners' Clevenger Apologizes For Tweets

(Seattle, WA)  --  Seattle Mariners backup catcher Steve Clevenger is apologizing for two tweets he sent out about police shootings and protests.  The tweets, which were issued yesterday, referred in particular to the protests happening in Charlotte, North Carolina.  One tweet called the Black Lives Matter movement and President Obama "pathetic" and said "everyone involved should be locked behind bars like animals."  The Mariners later released a statement, saying they "strongly disagree with the language and tone" of Clevenger's comments.

Major Leagues

Moving on to big league baseball…the 3-game series came to a close last night in LA with the Dodgers jumping on the Giants early, and going to a
9-3 win over San Francisco.

LA takes 2 out of 3 from the Giants and the Dodgers lead the West now by 6-games with 10 to play in the regular season. SF still in the mix for one of 2 Wildcard playoff spots as the Mets lost.

LA hosts the Rockies tonight for a 4 game series, and the Giants move south to San Diego to face the Padres.

In the American League…the Mariners avoid a sweep by the Blue Jays as Seattle beats Toronto, 2-1 in 12-innings yesterday. The M’s are tied for 4th in the American League Wildcard playoff hunt with 10-games to play and have today off then play in Minnesota Friday.

Hardwood action on the IMC volleyball courts tonight as 4TH ranked Bend (6-3) entertains cross-town rival and 8th ranked, and defending 5A Champion Summit at 6pm.

NPRA Rodeo

Top rodeo cowboys and cowgirls from across the region will be in Prineville this week end for the  Northwest Professional Rodeo Association Finals set for Friday and Saturday 7pm in the indoor arena at the Crook County Fairgrounds.

The NPRA is billed as the largest regional rodeo organization in the western United States. Each year, the association sanctions more than 40 rodeos in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and California, culminating this weekend with the NPRA Finals.

Among the featured contestants in the finals field is Terrebonne cowboy Shane Erickson, who this past weekend won the all-around championship at the Pendleton Round-Up.

Timbers' Melano On MLS Under 24 List

(Portland, OR)  --  Timbers forward Lucas Melano has been named to the 2016 MLS 24 Under 24 list.  Melano comes in at tenth in the annual rankings, which recognizes the best young players in the league.  Melano has scored three goals and dished out five assists this season for Portland.  The Timbers travel to Houston to face the Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday night.

Portland's Lillard Named Among Top PGs In NBA

(Portland, OR)  --  Sporting News has named Portland's Damian Lillard among the top point guards in the NBA.  Lillard checks in at fourth on the list of the Top 15 NBA point guards in the league.  Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry and Chris Paul are the only players who Sporting News believes are above Lillard.

Ducks Announce Pac-12 Schedule

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon women's basketball team has announced its Pac-12 Conference schedule for the upcoming season.  The Ducks open conference play with home games against Washington on December 30th and Washington State on New Year's Day.  They'll close out the regular season at home against Stanford on Sunday, February 26th.

Ducks Announce Phil Knight Invitational

(Eugene, OR)  --  The University of Oregon has announced the PK80 - Phil Knight Invitational, a 16-team tournament that will honor the Nike co-founder's 80th birthday.  The three-day event will take place at the Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum during Thanksgiving weekend in 2017.  The tourney will include college basketball powerhouses such as Duke, Georgetown, North Carolina and Michigan State.  Oregon, Portland and Portland State will also participate.

(Undated)  --  The 2-and-1 Oregon Ducks return to Autzen Stadium to open Pac-12 play against the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday afternoon.  Oregon is coming off a 35-32 loss to Nebraska.  Oregon State will face its toughest matchup of the young season when Boise State comes to town on Saturday.  The 1-and-1 Beavers will try to give the Broncos their first loss of the year.  Portland State will look to end a two-game losing streak when it hits the road against Southern Utah on Saturday night.  The Vikings are 1-and-2 on the season.

Beavers Announce Conference Schedule

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Oregon State women's basketball team has announced its conference schedule for the upcoming season.  The Beavers will open Pac-12 play against Washington State on Friday, December 30th at Gill Coliseum.  OSU will follow that up with a New Year's day matchup at home against Washington.  The Beavers close out the regular season of conference play by hosting Cal on Sunday, February 26th.

High School Sports

Week-3 under the Friday Night Lights recap and the defending 5A champion Summit Storm blew past Pendleton in the I-M-C League opener, 55-17. Summit, 2-1, travels to Hermiston Friday night.

Meantime, Bend ups its record to 3-and-0 with a 42-28 win over Redmond. The Lava Bears head to Hood River this week.

Ridgeview notches its first win of the early season with a 12-6 overtime win over Hood River and Hermiston beat Mt. View, 35-21.

Ridgeview hosts Pendleton and Mt. View plays at Redmond Friday.

Ducks Out Of Coaches Poll

(Undated)  --  The Oregon Ducks are in an unfamiliar position, which is out of the USA Today Coaches Top 25.  Oregon dropped out of the rankings this week after losing to Nebraska Saturday.  Other teams in the PAC-12 remained in the same spots as last week, with Stanford at number six and Washington in ninth place.  Utah broke into the Top 25, landing at 23rd.

Ducks Fall At Nebraska

(Lincoln, NE)  --  Oregon suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday as Nebraska downed the Ducks, 35-32, in Lincoln.  Quarterback Dakota Prukop was 14-of-23 for 146 yards and added 87 yards on the ground.  Kani Benoit rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on six carries, and Tony Brooks-James added 37 yards and three touchdowns.  The 2-and-1 Ducks host the Colorado Buffaloes at Autzen Stadium on Saturday here on Newstalk KBND at 2:30 p.m., pre-game show at 12:30 p.m..

Beavers Easily Down Bengals

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Elsewhere, Oregon State won its home opener as the Beavers run past Idaho State, 37-7 at Reser Stadium on Saturday.  OSU jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way.  Victor Bolden Junior led the Beavers' ground attack with 111 yards and a touchdown.  He added two receptions for 56 yards.  The 1-and-1 Beavers host undefeated Boise State at Reser Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 12:30.

7th ranked Stanford ran over USC, 27-10 in Palo Alto Saturday night to improve to 2-and-0. 8th ranked Washington cruised by Portland State, 41-3. Stanford plays at UCLA and Washington visits Arizona Saturday night.

Huskies Hammer Vikings

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Washington Huskies showed why they are a top-10 team with a 41-3 victory over Portland State on Saturday.  PSU struggled to get its offense going and was limited to 182 total yards on the day.  A third-quarter field goal was the only points the Vikings could manage.  Portland State fell to 1-and-2 on the year.  The Vikings travel to Cedar City to face Southern Utah on Saturday.

Rams Top Seahawks, 9-3

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  The Seahawks will try to find some solutions to their sluggish offense, after losing yesterday to the Rams in Los Angeles, 9-3.  A fumble by running back Christine Michael put an end to Seattle's final chance to put up a go-ahead score.  Russell Wilson completed 22 of 35 passes for 254 yards and was sacked twice.  The Seahawks will host the 49ers next Sunday.

NFL

From the NFL…first home game in LA for the Rams in a decade and L-A out kicks the Seahawks, 9-3. Chip Kelly and the 49-ers blasted by the Panthers in Carolina, 46-27. Niners play in Seattle Sunday. Tonight…the Bud Light Monday Night game has the Bears hosting the Eagles.

award over the weekend is 36 year old Shane Erickson of Terrebonne.

Erickson competed and placed in multiple roping events that gave him the top position among nearly 700 cowboys at this year’s Round-Up.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers used a pair of second-half goals to power past the Philadelphia Union, 2-1, at Providence Park on Saturday.  Diego Valeri and Fanendo Adi each found the back of the net for Portland.  The Timbers travel to Houston to face the Dynamo on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium.  Portland is fifth in the Western Conference with 41 points at 11-11-and-8.  Houston is last in the West.

Trail Blazers Open Camp Next Week

(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers open training camp next week.  The team will hold its annual media day on Monday, September 26th.  Training camp will officially begin on Tuesday, September 27th.  The Blazers will be looking to improve on last year's 44-win season.

Moving to college football Thursday night play…6th ranked Houston had its hands full with Cincinnati tied 10-10 at halftime, but the Cougars pick off the Bearcats twice for scores late in the game to beat Cincy, 40-to-16. Houston is now 3-and-oh and plays at Texas State next Saturday.

The Oregon Ducks make their first road trip of the year, and have a big test in Lincoln, Nebraska as they meet Mike Riley’s Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Both teams are 2-0, and kickoff is set for 1230pm and nationally televised on ABC. We will bring you the pregame Show at 1030am here on the home of the Ducks, FM news 100 and 11-10 KBND.

Huskies' Petersen Says Portland State "Presents Challenges"

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Portland State Vikings, after coming off a 66-35 loss at San Jose State, will play the Washington Huskies on the road tomorrow.  The Huskies are 2-and-0 after breezing past Idaho last Saturday.  Washington head coach Chris Petersen says Portland State creates "interesting challenges" with its pistol offense.  The Huskies and Vikings are scheduled for kickoff tomorrow at five p.m. in Seattle.

Former Duck, 49er Quillan Dies At 60

(San Francisco, CA)  --  The San Francisco 49ers say former Oregon Duck and 49ers standout center Fred Quillan has died at age 60.  The NFL team's website says Quillan died Monday.  He played on two Super Bowl championship squads as a member of the 49ers from 1978 to 1987.  Quillan was a Portland native who graduated from Central Catholic High School, and played for the Ducks from 1975 to 1977.

Former Beaver Named Hall Of Fame Finalist

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Former Oregon State football player Herman "Buddy" Clark is one of 18 finalists for the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame.  The six-member class will be announced on October 12th, and the enshrinement ceremony will take place in Hawaii on Saturday, January 21st, 2017.  Clark played for the Beavers from 1949 to 1951.

The Seattle Mariners enjoyed a day off yesterday and will get back to work tonight hoping to win their 9th straight game when they host the Houston Astros.

The M’s are 8-1/2 games back of the A-L West division leading Rangers with 16-games to play in the regular season.

In Kansas City, the A’s complete a 4-game sweep pounding the Royals, 14-to-5.

IN the NFL last night…the New York Jets hold off a 2nd half rally by Buffalo to beat the Bills, 37-31. On Sunday, the Seahawks are in L-A to face the Rams, and the 49-ers take on the Panthers in Carolina.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers return to MLS action on Saturday afternoon at Providence Park against the Philadelphia Union.  Portland is coming off a 4-2 loss to Deportivo Saprissa in CONCACAF Champions League action.  The Timbers are sixth in the Western Conference with 38 points at 10-11-and-8.  Philly is fourth in the East with 41 points at 11-10-and-8.

OSU To Upgrade Track & Field Center

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State University will be updating the Whyte Track & Field Center in preparation for the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships.  The Beavers will host the heptathlon and the decathlon events in May 2017.  OSU has not hosted the conference championships since 1987.

PSU Women's Basketball Releases Schedule

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland State women's basketball team has released its schedule for the upcoming season.  The Vikings open the 2016 season with a pair of road games against Cal State Northridge and Boise State.  PSU's home opener is scheduled for Sunday, November 20th against Pacific Union.  The Vikings will host 11 home games this season at the Peter W. Stott Center.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Portland State football team will face its toughest test of the season on Saturday when the Vikings travel to Seattle to take on the eighth-ranked Huskies.  PSU opened the year with a 17-point win over Central Washington.  The Vikings fell last weekend to San Jose State, 66-35.

Wilson On Pace To Start Vs. L.A.

(Renton, WA)  --  Russell Wilson appears he'll be ready to go for Sunday's game against the Rams.  Wilson was back at practice yesterday after recovering from a sprained ankle he suffered during the Miami game.  Head coach Pete Carroll says Thomas Rawls will start at running back Sunday.  Offensive guard Germain Ifedi is nursing an ankle sprain and probably won't play Sunday, meaning J'Marcus Webb would start in his place against the Rams.

Portland's Sanchez Named Player Of The Week

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland's Eddie Sanchez has been named the West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week.  Sanchez scored twice last week to lead the Pilots to the 2016 ProRehab Classic title.  The senior midfielder was featured on SportCenter's Top 10 for his bicycle kick goal against Evansville.

Philomath Cancels Football Season Following Hazing Incident

(Philomath, OR)  --  Philomath High School is canceling the remainder of its football season.  Six players and one assistant coach have been cited in an alleged hazing incident at a team training camp in July.  The school initially had decided to cancel its first three games, but the Philomath School Board opted to cancel the remainder of the varsity season.  The program's coaching staff is on paid administrative leave as law enforcement and the district continue to investigate.

NCAAF Rankings

Week three of the College football rankings from Associated Press sees a change in the top-5, and the Ducks jump a few spots.

Alabama remains the unanimous number-one team in both the AP and Coaches poll. The Crimson Tide open S-E-C play Saturday at 19th ranked Ole Miss.

Florida State replaces Clemson at Number-2, and Ohio State and Michigan all move up one spot.

So, it’s Bama, Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson the top-5.
Florida State plays at #10 Louisville, and Ohio State visits 14th ranked Oklahoma in Norman. Meantime, Michigan hosts Colorado.

Houston remains rated sixth in the nation, followed by Stanford and Washington of the Pac-12.

Stanford entertains USC Saturday night in the Pac-12 opener while the Huskies host Portland State.

Georgia drops from number-9 down to 16th, and Wisconsin and Louisville move up to round out the top-10 behind Stanford and Washington.

Monday Night Football

Bud Light Monday Night Football double-header saw The Steelers beat the Redskins in Washington, 38-16. Pittsburgh quarterback Big Ben Rothelsberger threw 3 TD’s and DeAngelo Williams ran for 143 yards and two scores in the win.

The nightcap game in Santa Clara saw Chip Kelly’s 49-ers shoutout the Rams, 28-zip.

Niners defense held L-A to just 60 yards rushing and picked off Case Keenum twice while SF was only penalized twice on the night amassing 320-yards in total offense.

The Niners head to Carolina Sunday at 10-am to face Cam Newton and the Panthers next. The Rams host the Seahawks Sunday afternoon.
 

Carroll: Wilson Plans To Play Sunday

(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll says he's confident that quarterback Russell Wilson will play Sunday against the Rams, despite suffering a sprained ankle in the Miami game.  Carroll says X-rays have revealed no structural damage and Wilson will practice tomorrow.  The coach also says running back Thomas Rawls and tight end Jimmy Graham showed no ill effects yesterday after seeing their first regular-season action last Sunday since being injured last year.

Timbers To Meet Deportivo Saprissa Tomorrow

(San José, Costa Rica)  --  The Portland Timbers meet Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica.  The two teams square off in CONCACAF Champions League group play.  The Timbers resume MLS play on Saturday at home against the Philadelphia Union.
 

Mariners Win Again, 8-1

(Anaheim, CA)  --  On the big league Scoreboard…Seattle beats the Angels, 8-1 in Anaheim. The Seattle Mariners are in sole possession of second place in the AL West. Robinson Cano  had his 33rd homer of the year and Leonys Martin scored three runs to help Seattle win its sixth straight game.  Mariners starter Ariel Miranda earned his fourth win of the year against one loss.  Seattle and L.A. will play again tonight in Anaheim.

Report: Blazers Signing Stiemsma

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Trail Blazers are adding front court depth.  The Vertical reports the Blazers have signed big man Greg Stiemsma to a training camp deal.  Stiemsma has played for the Celtics, Timberwolves, Pelicans and Raptors in a four-year NBA career.

High School Sports

We start with recapping Week two of High School Football under the Friday night lights where Summit entertained Ashland High in a rematch of the Class 5A Football Championship game last December, and the Storm backed up their Title with their first win of the young season by beating the Grizzlies 35-to-21.

The Bend Lava Bears hold off Corvallis in a wild night at Punk Hunnel Stadium, 50-41. The Lava Bears are 2-and-0 and ranked Number-1 in the OSAA Power rankings and kickoff I-M-C League play hosting Redmond this week, while Summit entertains Pendleton.

Elsewhere…Mt. View starts 2-and-oh with a 24-14 win over Central, and Ridgeview blanked at Eagle Point, 44-zip.

Defending 4A champion Cascade edged Sisters, 12-10. Sweet Home gets by Crook County 27-20, and Madras shutout by Cottage Grove, 63-to-nothing.
 

NCAAF Ducks

The Oregon Ducks start 2-and-oh with a 44-26 win over Virginia at Autzen Stadium Saturday night. Transfer Quarterback Dakota Prukop (prooh-cop) threw for 3 TD’s and Royce Freeman ran for 207-yards and 2 scores.

The Ducks amassed 632 yards in Total Offense and picked off 2 Virginia passes for the win.

Oregon makes its first road trip of the year to face former Beaver Head Coach Mike Riley and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  Nebraska is 2-and-oh after its 52-17 win over Wyoming.

Kickoff Saturday from Lincoln is set for 1230pm…The Duck pregame Show begins at 1030am here on Newstalk KBND.

Timbers Blank RSL

(Portland, OR)  --  Fanendo Adi's first-half goal pushed the Timbers past Real Salt Lake, 1-nil, at Providence Park on Saturday.  Adi has scored the fourth-most goals in the MLS this season.  His 14 goals are three behind the league leader.  Portland improved to 10-11-and-8 with 38 points.  The Timbers take on Deportivo Saprissa in CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday.

NFL

The Seattle Seahawks opened NFL league play with a 12-10 win over the Dolphins at Century Link Field.

The Seahawks pulled the win out with 31-seconds to play on a Russell Wilson to Doug Baldwin TD pass.

The Hawks play in L-A Sunday facing the Rams in a 1pm kickoff.

The Raiders hold on for a 35-34 win over the Saints in Nola. Oakland hosts the Falcons this weekend.

Coming up tonight…it’s Bud Light Monday Night Football and a doubleheader with Washington hosting the Steelers at 4pm, followed by Chip Kelly and the 49-ers entertaining the Rams at 720pm on ESPN-TV.

Ducks Thump Cavaliers

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon football team improved to 2-and-0 with a 44-26 victory over the Virgina Cavaliers at Autzen Stadium on Saturday.  Quarterback Dakota Prukop led the air attack with 331 yards and three touchdowns.  Running back Royce Freeman added 207 yards on the ground and a pair of TDs.  The number-21 Ducks travel to Lincoln to face Nebraska on Saturday.

Beavers Prep For Bengals

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Oregon State football team continues to prepare for its upcoming matchup against Idaho State.  The Beavers were off this past weekend.  They'll kick off their home opener on Saturday afternoon against the Bengals at Reser Stadium.

On the Major League Scoreboard….Seattle wins its 5th straight game as the Mariners sweep the A’s three games in Oakland over the weekend, including yesterday’s 3-2 win.

The M’s are tied with Houston now just 9-1/2 games back of the A-L West division leading Rangers with 19-games to go in the regular season.

Seattle in Anaheim tonight to face the Angels.

Week 2 of the Prep Football season takes to the grid iron tonight under the Friday Night Lights….where defending 5A State Champion Summit entertains Ashland in its home opener. The Storm and Grizzlies played in the 5A Title game last December.

Meantime, Bend entertains Corvallis in the Lava Bears season opener.
Mt. View greets Central of Independence.

Redmond travels to Silverton, and Ridgeview plays at Eagle Point.

In the 4A divison…Sisters travels to the Valley to tangle with defending 4A champion Cascade. Crook County ventures to Sweet Home, and Madras entertains Cottage Grove.

Elsewhere…LaPine plays host to the Culver Bulldogs in a 3A vs. 2A matchup.

(Undated)  --  Oregon hosts the Virginia Cavaliers at Autzen Stadium tomorrow night.  The Ducks are looking to remain unbeaten after a 53-28 win over UC Davis.  Oregon State is off this week but will host Idaho State at Reser Stadium on Saturday, September 17th.  The Beavers are 0-and-1 after losing to Minnesota, 30-23.  Portland State hits the road against San Jose State tomorrow afternoon.  The Vikings are 1-and-0 after a 43-26 win over Central Washington.

Report: Lynch May Return To Football

(Undated)  --  Several reports are circulating that former Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch may renounce his retirement.  Lynch, who retired after the end of last season, is currently "up in the air" about coming back, according to Mike Florio of "Pro Football Talk."  The Seahawks still hold Lynch's rights and have him placed on the reserve-retired list.  Florio quotes a source as saying Lynch could be back on the field as early as Week 4 or 5.

Mariners Win Series With Texas

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will head to California today after taking three games out of four against the Texas Rangers.  Last night's 6-3 Seattle win was aided by home runs from Kyle Seager and Dae-Ho Lee.  Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker got the victory.  The Mariners will play at Oakland tonight to start a three-game series.

Hops Fall To Emeralds

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Emeralds jumped out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 6-2 win over the Hops in game two of the Northwest League South Division playoff series.  Bo Takahashi struggled out of the gate, allowing five runs on seven hits over one-and-a-third innings.  The teams meet tonight in Eugene to decide the three-game series.  The winner advances to the face either Spokane or Everett for the Northwest League Championship.

Beavers Announce Basketball Schedule

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Oregon State men's basketball team has released its schedule for the upcoming season.  The Beavers open the regular season against Prairie View A&M on Friday, November 11th.  Southern Cal comes to town to open Pac-12 play on Wednesday, December 28th.  OSU closes out the regular season with the civil war matchup against Oregon on Saturday, March 4th.  The Beavers were 19-and-13 last season.

High School Sports

On the High School Volleyball hardwood tonight, two perennial powers clash on the west side of Bend when Summit, the defending 5A State Champions entertain the class 4A State Runnerup Sisters Outlaws.

Summit, 1-and-3 on the year, is looking to snap a 3 match losing streak after Crook County swept the Lady Storm 3-games on Tuesday night.

Sisters takes on its second straight IMC power after falling at Bend Tuesday night, 3-1.

Elsewhere, the Lady Lava Bears of Bend and Crook County clash in Prineville tonight. Ridgeview entertains The Dalles, and Redmond travels to South Eugene.

Moving outdoors…on the Soccer field, Ridgeview boys can improve to a
4-and-0 start with a win today at Wilsonville. Summits hosts defending 4A Champion Sisters…and Redmond/Culver hosts Crook County

On the Girls side, defending 5A Champion Summit greets Sisters and Ridgeview hosts Wilsonville’s girls.

NWSL SOCCER

The Portland Thorns women’s professional Soccer team clinched a National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth for the first time in 4-years as the The Thorns blanked Houston, 3-zip in front of over 13-thousand fans at Portland’s Providence Park.

Portland, 10-3-and-5 on the year have two league games remaining, and will host a Semifinal match. The Thorns won the inaugural season of the N-W-S-L in 2013.

Portland hosts Western New York Flash Sunday night.

NFL

The NFL season kicks off tonight in Denver when the Broncos host Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Kickoff set for 530pm and televised on NBC.

On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks open the season hosting the Dolphins with kickoff from Century Link Field at 130pm.

Number-23 Ducks Host Cavaliers

(Eugene, OR)  --  The number-23 Oregon Ducks host the Virginia Cavaliers at Autzen Stadium on Saturday night.  UVA is coming off a 37-20 loss to Richmond, while Oregon is looking to remain unbeaten after a 53-28 win over UC Davis.  The Ducks dropped a spot in the poll this week despite the 25-point victory.

Major Leagues

On to Big League baseball….The Seattle Mariners ended their 7-game home stand with an 8-3 win over A-L West leading Texas. The M’s cut the Rangers lead to 11-1/2 games in the division with 21 games to play.

In the National League…another 1-run game for the San Francisco Giants, but the Giants come up short losing to the Rockies in Denver, 6-5

The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks, 3-1, and LA now leads the Giants by 5-games for the N-L West lead.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Oregon women's basketball team has announced its non-conference schedule for the upcoming season.  The Ducks will entertain a dozen non-conference games, including matchups against Michigan State, Mississippi State, Clemson and Ole Miss.  Oregon is coming off a 24-and-11 season and an appearance in the WNIT semifinals.

Carroll Says Graham's Chances To Start Sunday "Good"

(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll says the chances of tight end Jimmy Graham playing Sunday against Miami are "good."  Carroll says he'll be watching Graham's progress during the week to make the final decision on whether he'll dress out against the Dolphins for the regular-season opener.  The coach says running back Thomas Rawls will also be ready to go Sunday, but will be restricted in the number of plays he participates in.

Timbers Prep For RSL

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers continue to prepare for their upcoming match against Real Salt Lake at Providence Park on Saturday night.  Portland is coming off a 3-1 loss against FC Dallas.  The Timbers occupy the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.  Portland is 9-11-and-8 with 35 points.  RSL is second in the West with 44 points at 12-8-and-8.

Mariners Thump Texas, 8-3

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will wrap up their four-game series with Texas tonight, after beating the Rangers, 8-3.  A grand slam homer in the first inning and a solo home run in the third by Adam Lind last night helped Seattle earn the win.  Mariners' starting pitcher Ariel Miranda got the victory.  Seattle and Texas will complete the series tonight at Safeco Field.
 

College Football Roundup

The opening weekend of College football was full of upsets of top-ranked teams where Number 3, 5, 9 and 10 were all dumped.

Oklahoma, LSU, Tennessee, and Notre Dame among some of the biggies that suffered losses last week.

Both the AP and Coaches poll for week-2 was released yesterday and Alabama and Clemson still the number-one, and number-two rated teams.

IN the AP poll, Florida State moves up to number-3 bumping Oklahoma down to 14th. Ohio State is rated 4th and Michigan 5th.

Houston jumps up to number-6 and two Pac-12 teams follow with Stanford ranked 7th and the Washington Huskies 8th.

Georgia and Wisconsin round out the top-10.

Tennessee fell to 17th, and Notre Dame with its loss to Texas dropped to 18th, while LSU is now rated 21st.

The Oregon Ducks are ranked 24th and will host Virginia at Autzen Stadium Saturday here on Newstalk KBND with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

From the Big League diamond…

On the big league diamond…the Seattle Mariners were defeated by the Texas Rangers 10-7. The M’s are 2-games above 500 with a 70-and-68 record, but trail Texas for the A-L West lead by 12-1/2 games. Seattle finishes the 7-game home stand at SafeCo Field tonight with Texas. The M’s have 22 games to play after tonight.

In the National League…the San Francisco Giants rally to beat the Rockies in Colorado, 3-2.  SF closes out the series tonight in the mile-high city before heading to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks over the weekend ending a 10-game road trip. The Giants trail the Dodgers by 4-games for the N-L West lead, but lead the Wildcard playoff race by one-half over St. Louis.

Ducks' Dye Earns Pac-12 Honor

(Walnut Creek, CA)  --  Oregon freshman linebacker Troy Dye is the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week.  Dye racked up 11 tackles, including four and-a-half for a loss, and a sack in the Ducks 53-28 season opening win over UC Davis.  It was the most for an Oregon freshman since Walter Thurmond the Third had 14 tackles in 2006.

Oregon Reveals New Uniforms For Virginia

(Eugene, OR)  --  Per usual, the Oregon Ducks will be dawning some new duds for their upcoming game against Virginia.  The program revealed its yellow-themed uniforms on Twitter.  The Ducks will wear black helmets with yellow face masks, and wear yellow from their shoulders to toes.  It will be a yellow-out at Autzen on Saturday.  Oregon defeated UC Davis 53-28 to open the season.

Beavers Host Idaho State Saturday

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Beavers are 0-and-1 after falling to Minnesota last Thursday.  They can bounce back on Saturday as they host Idaho State at Reser Stadium.  Oregon State opens Pac-12 action on October 1st at Colorado.
 

Megan Rapinoe Joins Kaepernick In Protest

(Bridgeview, IL)  --   Former University of Portland and women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe took a knee on Sunday before her Seattle Reign took on the Chicago Red Stars in NWSL action.  Rapinoe is also a star for the U.S. women's national team.  She told ESPN that she's disgusted with the way San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been treated since his protest of the anthem.

Winterhawks Continue Preseason With Win

(Everett, WA)  --  The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Everett Silvertips 4-1 in preseason action to remain undefeated in exhibition play.  After allowing a goal in the second period, the 'Hawks scored four unanswered to improve to 3-and-0.  The Hawks will continue preseason play with three games this week in Kennewick, Washington, beginning Thursday.  The regular season begins September 24th.

Wilson, Chancellor Voted Seahawks Team Captains

(Renton, WA)  --  The Seattle Seahawks are continuing preparations for their season opener against Miami.  The team has voted to appoint quarterback Russell Wilson and safety Kam Chancellor as offensive and defensive team captains, respectively.  Punter Jon Ryan and defensive back DeShawn Shead have been named special-teams captains.  Kickoff Sunday at CenturyLink Field is set for 1:05 p.m.
