Elks Drop Series To Knights, UO & OSU Football Camps, Bend North Softball LLWS

 College Football: 

The University of Oregon and Oregon State start training camps this week. It will be with swirling rumors about the fate of the Pac 12. On Friday Oregon State issued a statement supporting the conference in the wake of Colorado leaving for the Big 12. This weekend conflicting reports said the U of O could be going to the Big 10 or Big 12 next season, and the announcement could come over the next 2 weeks. Washington, Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State were also included in reports as schools that could be switching conferences. The Ducks 2023 camp starts Wednesday. Today is media day. Oregon State’s camp opener is Thursday.

NFL:

Seattle Seahawks saw injuries sideline their 2 young running backs at training camp this weekend. Kenneth Walker, a runner up for the offensive rookie of the year last season has a groin problem, and this year’s 2nd round pick Zach Charbonet has a shoulder issue. No timeline was given for either  R-B to return to practice.

MLB:

San Francisco won their series over Boston winning 4 to 2 in 11 innings yesterday. The Giants at 58 and 48 are in 2nd place, 2 games behind the Dodgers, and first place in the wildcard. Now S F can put some distance between them and Arizona who is two games back in the NL West.  First pitch against the Diamondbacks is at 6:45

Seattle shut out the Diamondbacks yesterday 4 to nothing behind another solid performance from Luis Castillo. The Mariners are 54 and 51, winners of 4 of their last 5, but the big question remains if they’re going to try to compete or toss in the towel at the trade deadline tomorrow.. 

Soccer: 

The PortlandThorns lost to Angel City 2 to 1 Saturday in match 5 of 6 of the group stage of the NWSL Cup. The Thorns finish group play next Sunday against rival OL Reign.

The Portland Timbers have advanced in the Leagues Cup. They’ll meet Monterey in the round of 32 knock-out stage this Friday.

Local:

The Elks lost to Corvallis last night (Su)…dropping the rubber match of the series to the first place  Knights. Bend is 7 games out of first in the South division. Next up is a mid week home series against Springfield. First pitch from Vince Genna Stadium is at 6:35.

The Bend North Little League Softball team is headed to the Little League World Series. Their first game will be next Monday.  

Elks Win, Lanning Adds Another Year At UO, OSU Committed to Pac 12

College: 

The University of Oregon approved a contract extension for Dan Lanning. The 2nd year head Football coach added another year to his deal…now going to 2029. There’s also a salary bump starting with this year. Oregon locks down its coach amid upheaval in the Pac 12 with more speculation that Oregon, and Washington could also leave the conference at some point.

 

Oregon State University released a statement saying the school remains committed to playing in the Pac 12.

 

The Ducks and Beavers baseball teams will be starting next season playing in Texas for some exhibition games with other high profile schools. The U of O plays February 16th through 18th and OSU will play February 23rd through 25th. 

MLB:

Seattle takes on the Diamondbacks in Arizona. The Mariners are 52 and 50, 7 and a half in back of first place Texas. The D Backs are 3rd in the NL West and have struggled of late, losing 7 of their last 10. Game 1 of the 3 game series starts at 6:40 tonight 

San Francisco hosts Boston for a series starting tonight. The Giants at 56 and 47 are in 2nd place, 3 games behind the Dodgers. The Red Sox have won 6 of their last 10, are in 4th place in the AL East but stand at 55 and 47. First pitch at 7:15

Soccer: 

 

The PortlandThorns play Angel City in an NWSL Cup match tomorrow night at 7. The Thorns are in second place in the group and could use the win to clinch a spot in the knockout stage

Local:

The Elks bats finally got going in Walla Walla last night. Bend won 13 to 6 with 13 hits. The Elks avoid the sweep and come back home with a record of 9 and 9 in the second half of the season. 21 and 24 overall. Corvallis is in town tonight. The Knights are leading the south division at 15 and 3 and have won 9 of their last 10. First pitch from Vince Genna Stadium is at 6:35.

Mt Bachelor Gravity Race Series is today, the downhill mountain bike series goes to the end of August.

Bend’s Pine Nursery Courts are packed with Pickleball players for the Pacific Northwest Classic through Sunday. 

UO Extending Lanning, Seahawks Camp-No Rookie Witherspoon, Timbers Lose

College Football: 

Officials at the University of Colorado are reportedly talking about a return to the Big 12 conference. Reports say meetings were held yesterday and are scheduled today (Th) to discuss a hasty exit from the Pac 12 for the conference they left back in 2010. Leaders for the Big 12 schools have voted to accept Colorado’s application to the conference should one be submitted. There has also been talk of the Big 12 eyeing Arizona and Arizona State for expansion possibilities. USC and UCLA are already going to the Big 10 next season. 

A committee for the University of Oregon’s board of trustees meets this morning at 10 to consider a contract extension for Dan Lanning. The 2nd year head Football coach is currently signed through 2027.

NFL:

Seattle Seahawks training camp did not have number 5 overall draft pick Devon Witherspoon participate on day one. The Cornerback is the only player from the 2023 draft to not have a contract. Head coach Pete Carrol isn’t worried, telling a post practice press conference he thought the rookie would be in camp soon.

MLB:

Seattle held on to beat Minnesota 8 to 7 yesterday. Julio Rodriguez homered. The Mariners head to Phoenix to take on the Diamondbacks next. Game 1 of the 3 game series is tomorrow. 

San Francisco beat Oakland 8 to 3 last night to get the two-game sweep. JD Davis hit a 2-run homer. The Giants move into second place by themselves, 3 games behind the Dodgers. The homestand continues tomorrow (Fr) against Boston.

Soccer: 

The Timbers lost to Tigres last night 2 to1 in the Leagues Cup group match Portland had only 10 players in the second half as Evander was sent off with two yellow cards just before halftime. The Timbers will likely still move on to the knockout stage of the inaugural tournament thanks to goal differential in their group. Tigres will play San Jose Saturday in the final match of group play.

Local:

The Elks lost to Walla Walla 7 to 2 last night. Bend again matched the Sweets in hit total with 6, but couldn’t plate more runs. The Elks will try to snap their losing streak and salvage the series tonight. First pitch is at 6:35.

Elks Fall To Sweets, Pickleball PNW Classic Begins, Seahawks Start Training Camp

College Football: 

The Pac 12 is considering moving to an eight game conference schedule next season. A report says a committee of four athletic directors is exploring the idea of cutting a match up with a conference opponent, whether or not they expand following UCLA and USC’s departure next season. Another game would be scheduled with a non-conference school at some point in the season.

NFL:
The Seattle Seahawks Training Camp begins today. They’re one of the more intriguing teams in the NFL after making a surprise run to the playoffs last season following the trade of quarterback Russell Wilson. The 2022 Comeback player of the year QB Geno Smith will have a lot of weapons to work with on offense. Seattle’s Defense looks to be upgraded also. They do look to be playing a tougher schedule than last year though.

MLB:

San Francisco got past Oakland 2 to 1 last night on a Mike Yastzremski 8th inning go-ahead double. The Giants stopped their six game losing streak but still only managed four hits. SF keeps even with Arizona and 3.5 behind the Dodgers. Game two against the A’s is tonight. First Pitch at 6:45.

The Mariners completed the comeback in Minnesota yesterday, scoring seven runs combined in the 8th and 9th innings to win 9 to 7. Paul Sewald earned his 20th save. Julio Rodriguez hit two homeruns. Seattle is a game over .500 at 51 and 50. They can get the series win on a Game 3 get-away day. First Pitch is at 10:10 this morning. 

Soccer: 

The Timbers face Tigres from Liga MX tonight in match two of Group stage play of the Leagues Cup. Portland has 3 points after Saturday’s win. Tigres have a four match unbeaten streak. Game time is 8 pm from Providence Park.

Local:

The Elks lost 6 to 2 to Walla Walla last night. Bend matched the Sweets with eight hits but couldn’t do much with runners in scoring position…. Game two starts at 6:35 tonight.

Hundreds of Pickleball players of all ages will be competing for part of a $34,000 cash purse in the Pacific Northwest Classic at the Pine Nursery Courts starting today through Sunday.

OSU gets OL Commit, Seahawks Sign OLB Nwosu, Elks at Walla Walla

College Football: 

Oregon State picked up another commitment for the 2024 season. Payton Stewart, an offensive Lineman from Kelso Washington is the 11th high school player to announce their intention to play for the Beavers next season. The 6’7” 275 pound tackle recently decommitted from Northwestern University in the wake of a hazing scandal.

NBA:
The Portland Trail Blazers preseason schedule is out. They tip-off October 12th against the New Zealand Breakers. They also play at Phoenix and Utah, and face the Suns at the Moda Center for the 4 game warm-up. There has been no movement on a Damian Lillard trade.

NFL:
The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed Outside Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu to a 3 year deal. Nwosu tied for the team lead with 9 and a half sacks last season, and finished 9th in the League with 26 QB hits. The 5th year player was a Pro-Bowl alternate after his first season with Seattle. Seahawks Training Camp begins Wednesday. 

MLB:

The Mariners lost 4 to 3 in 10 innings to Minnesota yesterday. It was an exciting finish with the Ms going ahead with a 2 run homer from Kolten Wong in the top of the 9th on a 2 outs, and the Twins tying it in the bottom of the 9th before pushing across the winning run in the 10th. Paul Sewald took the loss for Seattle. Game 2 First Pitch against the AL Central leaders is at 4:40 today.

San Francisco lost 5 to 1 to Detroit yesterday in a make-up game from earlier in the season. The losing streak is now at 6 as the Giants bats stayed cold, managing just 4 hits. Wilmer Flores hit his 13 homer, accounting for the only run. S F will look to get in the Win column as they start a series against Oakland tonight. First Pitch is at 6:45 tonight.

Local:

The Elks are in Walla Walla for a three-game mid-week series against the Sweets. Bend is in the middle of the South Division at 8 and 7 in the season’s 2nd half… and 20 and 22 overall.  Walla Walla is at the bottom of the division losing their last 4. Game 1 starts at 6:35 tonight.

 

Elks Win Series, Pac 12 ADs Hopeful On TV Deal

College Football: 

Pac 12 athletic directors expressed hope that the conference would soon be securing a new media rights contract.  Oregon’s A.D. Rob Mullens told reporters the TV deal was 'critical'. Mullens also called the U of O a proud member of the Pac 12. Oregon is one of the school’s rumored to also be looking at leaving the conference. Maybe following UCLA and USC to the Big 10. 

MLB:

San Francisco lost to the Nationals 6 to 1 yesterday. It was a rough sweep for the Giants who only scored 5 runs in the series. They’re tied with Arizona four games behind L.A. in the West. Today the Giants are in Detroit for a make-up game from earlier in the season. First Pitch is at 10:10 this morning.

Seattle lost 4 to 3 to the Blue Jays yesterday. No sweep for the Ms but they did win the series over Toronto to stay a game above .500. Now in a scheduling quirk, the Mariners face the Twins again, like last week, this time for a 3 game series in Minnesota. First Pitch against the AL Central leaders is at 4:40 today. 

With the trade deadline approaching August 1st there are many rumors floating about players on the move. The Giants look to be buyers. There’s talk of them checking into pitcher Justin Verlander from the Mets if they continue to struggle this week. The Mariners, likely sellers, could part with Closer Paul Sewald.

Soccer: 

The Thorns play Angel City in their next NWSL Cup match on Saturday, after easily outscoring San Diego Friday. …The Portland Thorns Sophia Smith scored 2 goals for the Women’s National Team in their World Cup opener against Vietnam on Friday.

The Timbers face Tigres UANL from Liga MX on Wednesday night after beating San Jose in Group stage play of the Leagues Cup on Saturday.

Local:

The Elks lost 5 to 2 to Portland last night, not completing the sweep but winning the series against the Pickles. The win keeping Bend right ahead of them in the South Division in the second half standings. Next up is a trip to Walla Walla for a three-game mid-week series against the Sweets starting tomorrow night.

 

Pac 12 Media - Ducks 4th, Beavs 5th + Coach & Player Interviews Times

College Football:

The Pac 12 media picks for the 2023 season have USC winning the conference. Washington received the 2nd most votes, Oregon is picked to finish 4th with Oregon State right behind them at 5th. The Huskies received four first place votes…the Ducks got one. Washington State is picked to finish 7th. The media has picked the correct conference champion in six of the last twelve years. Last year’s conference winner Utah is predicted to finish 3rd… Pac 12 media day with player and coach press conferences is today in Las Vegas. Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith is scheduled for 11:40 this morning… followed by Beavers Wide Receiver Anthony Gould and Defensive Back Kitan Oladapo at 12:05. Ducks coach Dan Lanning is at the podium at 1:35 with Quarterback Bo Nix and Linebacker Jeffrey Bassa at 2:05

MLB:

San Francisco lost to the Reds 5 to 1 yesterday, splitting the 4 game series. Alex Cobb gave up the 5 runs in 4 and a third… The Giants head to the Nation’s capital today to start a series against the Nationals. First Pitch is at 4:05.

Seattle shutout Minnesota yesterday, getting a split of the 4 game series.. George Kirby struck out 10 in 7 innings. The Mariners plated 5 runs including homers from Teoscar Hernandez and Mike Ford. The Ms are back in Seattle tonight to take on the Blue Jays at 7:10.

The Thorns play San Diego in an NWSL Cup match tonight (Fri) at 7:30

The Timbers play San Jose in Group stage play of the Leagues Cup tomorrow (Sat) at 7.

The Boys Under 18 Bend FC Timbers soccer team is at Nationals in Florida. They played to a scoreless draw against an Illinois club yesterday. With 2 losses and a tie the Bend Timbers won’t make it to the semifinal round.

The Mt Bachelor Gravity Race Series is this afternoon starting at 3:30.

Elks Lose, Bend FC Timbers Final Match Today, Blazers Guarantee Walker Contract

College Football:

Pac 12 media day with player and coach press conferences is tomorrow in Las Vegas, but Colorado coach Deion Sanders won’t be with them as he is scheduled for another foot surgery. The other 11 team’s coaches and 2 players will be available to the media throughout the day. There is also the Pac 12 new media rights deal still hanging over the conference. It may not be announced by tomorrow. Negotiations have been going for 9 months with various TV and Online platforms. Tomorrow could be one of the final media days for the Universities of Oregon and Washington who could leave the conference eventually, according to various reports… following USC and UCLA next season.

NBA:

The Rose Garden Report cites a league source saying Portland will guarantee the contract of 2nd year Power Forward Jabari Walker. He averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Trail Blazers during last week’s Summer League games. Yesterday was the deadline for team’s to finalize those deals.

MLB:

Seattle lost 6 to 3 to Minnesota last night. Luis Castillo struck out 11 but took the loss. Eugenio Saurez homered in his 3rd straight game. The Mariners will try to avoid the Game 4 sweep today. First pitch is at 12:40.

San Francisco lost to the Reds 3 to 2 yesterday despite out hitting them…The loss allowed Arizona to catch up to them for 2nd place in the division. The Giants go for the 4 game series win this morning at 9:35.

Local:

Bend got roughed up by Wenatchee 13 to 5 last night… Dropping back into 4th place. The Elks are back at Vince Genna tomorrow to start a weekend series with Portland who are right behind them in the South Division. 

The Boys Under 18 Bend FC Timbers soccer team is at Nationals in Florida. They lost 2 to 1 to a Maryland team yesterday. The final match of Bracket play is against an Illinois team today at 3.

 

Elks Lose, Pac 12 Preseason All-Conference, Bend U18 Timbers Drop Match 1 - Play Today,

College Football:

Preseason All-conference teams were announced by the Pac 12 Media yesterday. Earning First Team honors are Oregon State running back Damien Martinez, offensive linemen Joshua Gray and Taliese Fuaga.  Kitan Oladapo was selected to the Defense, Anthony Gould is the return specialist. Oregon had 2 first teamers; running back Bucky Irving, and defensive line-man Brandon Dorlus. The Beavers and Ducks each had 2 second team selections. The U of O had 8 Honorable Mentions including quarterback Bo Nix. OSU had 5 honorable mentions… Pac 12 media day with player and coach press conferences is Friday. We’ll also get team rankings and championship picks from the media and coaches this week.

MLB:

San Francisco beat the Reds 4 to 2 in 10 innings in the continued game that was postponed from Monday. In last night’s originally scheduled game the Giants held off Cincinnati 11 to 10. Wilmer Flores had 2 home runs and had 5 rbi. It’s a 7 game win streak for SF and they’re a game and a half out of first in the division behind the Dodgers. Game 3 of the 4 game series is today at 4:10 from Great American Ball Park.

Seattle lost 10 to 3 to Minnesota last night. Eugenio Suarez homered again, the Mariners offense managed 9 hits but never got anything going as they dropped back to .500. The Mariners offense ranks near the bottom of MLB coming in 27th in average and 18th in Runs.  The Ms can still get a split of the 4 game series though. Game 3 is tonight starting at 6:40.

Local:

Bend lost 8 to 5 to Wenatchee last night… They got down early and couldn’t come back. Game 3 is a chance for The Elks to salvage the series before coming back to Bend for the weekend. First pitch tonight is at 6:35.

The Boys Under 18 Bend FC Timbers soccer team is at Nationals in Florida. They lost in match play 3 to 1 against a Missouri team yesterday. Bend plays again today at 3 against a team from Maryland. 

The final Bend Summer Crit series is today at Pacific Crest Middle School. The first bike racers start at 5.

 

Elks Lose, U18 FC Timbers At Nationals

College Athletics:

There are a lot of questions about who will be playing in the Pac 12 in the next few seasons as the conference’s football media day in Las Vegas approaches. Oregon State will have coach Jonathan Smith and Wide Receiver Anthony Gould representing them. Oregon will have coach Dan Lanning and Quarterback Bo Nix available to the press. It will be the last time for UCLA and USC as they leave for the Big 10 next season. Pac 12 media day is Friday.

MLB:

Seattle came back and then held on to beat Minnesota 7 to 6 last night. Geno Suarez homered and Paul Sewald got the Save, his 50th in his career with the Mariners. Game 2 is tonight. First pitch is at 6:40.

San Francisco’s game with the Reds was suspended due to thunderstorms last night and will be resumed at 2:40 today with a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning. The Giants will play game 2 in Cincinnati 90 minutes after the first game ends.

Local:

Bend lost at Wenatchee last night. The Applesox broke out of their slump to end the Elks winning streak. Wenatchee pounded out 11 runs on 11 hits including plating 8 in the 5th inning. The Elks scored 5 in the 4th but couldn’t match offenses. Game 2 is tonight at Paul Thomas Field. First pitch is at 6:35.

The boys Under 18 Bend FC TImbers soccer team is at Nationals in Florida playing in match play against a Missouri team today starting at 3. It’s the first time the Bend side has made it to the national level. 

Elks Sweep, Timbers Win, Trail Blazers Finish Summer League

NBA: 

The Trail Blazers finished Summer League this weekend, maybe fittingly playing against the Miami Heat. That’s supposed to be the team Damian Lillard could get traded to if a deal can work out. The Blazers lost to the Heat finishing Summer League at 4 and 2; nobody got seriously injured…and Michael Devoe played well at guard for Portland. 

College Athletics:

Oregon State Football received a commitment Saturday to its 2024 team from an Offensive Lineman out of Hawaii. 

MLB:

The Giants beat Pittsburgh 8 to 4 in 10 innings yesterday to get the sweep of the Pirates. San Francisco has won 5 in a row, and is in 2nd place, 1.5 games behind the Dodgers. The Giants are in Cincinnati today to face a Reds team which just gave up the NL Central lead.

The Seattle Mariners beat Detroit 2 to 0. The Shutout win salvaged the series. Bryce Miller picked up his 6th Win going 5 innings. Paul Sewald got his 18th Save. The Ms are back to .500 at 46 and 46. They welcome AL Central-leading Minnesota tonight. First pitch is at 6:40

Soccer: 

The Timbers beat Columbus  3 to 2, getting their first win in 6 matches. At Saturday’s game, Timbers legend Diego Valeri was honored and enshrined in the Ring Of Honor at Providence park. Valeri signed a 1 day contract on Friday so he could retire as a Timber. He transferred in 2021 to his favorite Argentinian team. Valeri was a part of the Timbers 2015 MLS Cup team and was MLS MVP in 2017.

Local:

The Bend Elks beat Port Angeles 13 to 2 yesterday on only 4 hits but 14 walks. The Elks got the sweep of the Lefties to run the second half record to 6 and 3, and overall record to 18 and 18. Bend is at Wenatchee tonight to play an Applesox team who have been having a good season but have lost 3 in a row. First pitch is at 6:35.

Elks Win, Trailblazers Win, High Cascades 100

NBA: 

The Trail Blazers beat Orlando yesterday to run their summer league record to 3 and 1. Guard Michael Devoe continued to impress, leading the Blazers with 18 points. He is getting that extra playing time since Scoot Henderson was out with a shoulder injury. Portland will play again this weekend and has an outside chance to make the top 4 playoffs depending on the results of games today. 

MLB:

The season resumes today.

The NL West is bunched up with the Giants, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks separated by 3 losses. The 3rd place Giants at 49 and 41 are in Pittsburgh to take on the scuffling Pirates. First pitch is at 4:10.

The Seattle Mariners are 45 and 44, in 3rd place, 6 games out of first behind the Texas Rangers in the AL west. The Mariners are back against Detroit in T Mobile Park after the long road trip for the All Star Break.  First Pitch from Seattle is at 7:10 with Luis Castillo going for the Ms.

Soccer: 

The Timbers haven’t won in over a month and are in 12th place in the MLS western conference. They’re back in Portland tomorrow against a good Columbus team, sitting in 5th place in the Eastern Conference. The match starts at 7:30

Local:

The Bend Elks blew out Cowlitz 16 to 3 last night, pounding out 18 hits. The Elks salvaged the series against the first place Black Bears and snapped a 3 game losing streak. Bend will try to keep those bats going on the road in Port Angeles tonight. First pitch is at 6:35.

Mt Bachelor’s Gravity Series Racing begins today (Fri)… The downhill mountain bike series is on six different racecourses all over the Bike Park. Racing goes from 5 to 7.

The High Cascades 100 mountain bike endurance race is tomorrow (Sat) on trails West of Bend. Start time is 5:30 AM from the Athletic Club of Bend.

 

Elks Fall To Cowlitz, Timbers Draw, NBA Summer League Winds Down

NBA: 

The Trail Blazers play Orlando at 6. It’s the 4th summer league game. After tonight (Th), Portland’s record and point differential will be ranked for a final match up with an equal opponent. .Right now the young Blazers have 2 wins against 1 loss and are in the middle of the pack in scoring…and points allowed. 

MLB:

Soon to be free agent Shohei Ohtani got a warm welcome and fan chants of ‘come to Seattle’  at the All Star game on Tuesdsay. He then told the sports media at news confererence he likes the city. That of course got Ms fans excited about the prospects of being in the Free agency sweepstakes for the pitcher and designated hitter.

Soccer: 

The Portland Timbers finished the second half of a game against Colorado that was suspended last Tuesday due to a rainstorm. It ended in a scoreless draw. The 12th place Timbers haven’t won a match in over a month. They’re back in Portland Saturday against a good Columbus team. 

Local:

The Bend Elks lost again to Cowlitz, this time 9 to 2, as the Elks could only manage 5 hits and 2 late runs last night at Vince Genna Stadium. Bend will try to salvage the series in game 3 tonight. First pitch is at 6:35.

Mt Bachelor’s Gravicross Racing begins tomorrow. The downhill mountain bike series has six different racecourses all over the Bike Park.

 

Blazers' GM Jolted, Ducks Drafted, Rutschman's All Star Debut

NBA: 

Portland Trail Blazers General Manager Joe Cronin says he wasn't surprised with star guard Damian Lillard’s requested trade, but it was a jolt when it happened.  

At a news conference in Las Vegas Monday, Cronin said he's frustrated he wasn't able to build a team that Lillard feels could win a championship now. "The effort being there which it was, that’s one thing but actually following through and getting that result is another, and, to that extent, I do feel like I failed Dame.”

Cronin says a team with Jerami Grant, Matisse Thybulle, and Shaedon Sharpe has the potential to be “win-now” soon.  

He hasn't lost hope, and Cronin says he wouldn't be surprised if something different happens than they were originally expecting.

College Athletics:

Four Oregon Ducks, Sabin Ceballos, Jace Stoffal, Colby Shade, and Josh Mollerus were selected in Day two of the Major League Baseball Draft in rounds 3 through 10. Oregon State's Garret Forrester was also selected in the 3rd round.The draft finishes today.

MLB:

The Mariners Julio Rodgriguez hit a record 41 bombs in the first round of the Home Run Derby Monday, but could only manage 20 in the next round. He lost to eventual Finals winner Vladimir Guerrero Jr... Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman blasted 27 while switch-hitting. The All Star game is in Seattle today starting at 5 PM

The Bend Elks are 3 and 1 in the 2nd half of the West Coast League season. The Elks are back at Vince Genna Stadium starting a series with Cowlitz today. First pitch is at 6:35 pm.

The U18 Bend FC Timbers boy’s soccer team is the first Central Oregon squad to qualify for the US Youth Soccer National Championships being held in Florida. A Go Fund Me has been set up to help pay for the trip.

Elks Win Series, Blazers' Henderson Hurts Shoulder

NBA: 

The Trail Blazers’ Scoot Henderson didn’t play in yesterday’s Summer League game against San Antonio after straining his shoulder in Friday’s opening game. Portland picked up the win over Victor Wembenyama and the Spurs, even though Guard Shaedon Sharpe struggled offensively… The Blazers take on Charlotte in Summer League game 3 tomorrow in Las Vegas at 5:30.

In free agency news, Forward Jerami Grant has signed a new 5 year deal to stay in the Rose City. Grant along with Matisse Thybulle who signed last week were the two main free agents on the Trail Blazers’ roster. 

There has been no movement on trade talks between Portland and Miami about Damian Lillard, according to reports this weekend.

MLB:

The Mariners beat Houston 3 to 1 yesterday to win the 4 game series. The Ms enter the All Star Break at 45 and 44, 6 games behind the Rangers in 3rd place in the AL West. 

The Giants beat Colorado in a 1-0 complete game from Logan Webb to get the series win over the Rockies. San Francisco is 2 and half games behind L A and Arizona heading into the break.

All Star week continues in Seattle with the Home Run Derby today starting at 5. The Mariners Julio Rodgriguez, last year’s runner-up, and Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman are competing. The All Star Game is tomorrow.

Soccer: 

The Portland Thorns lost 2-1 to Gotham FC yesterday. It was the 2nd consecutive loss for the Thorns who are off until July 21st as the NWSL season pauses for the World Cup.

The U.S. Women's National Team beat Wales 2-0 in a friendly tune-up before the World Cup starts on the 21st.

The U.S. Men's National Team advances to Wednesday's CONCACAF Gold Cup Semi-final, after beating Canada on Penalty Kicks 2-2 (3-2).

Local:

The Bend Elks lost last night to Portland but the Elks took the series from the Pickles. The Elks are in 5th place in the South Division, winners of 6 of their last 10. They’re back at Vince Genna Stadium starting a series with Cowlitz tomorrow.

At yesterday’s conclusion of the Oregon 12 or 24 hour mountain bike race at Wanoga sno-park, 10 women, and 21 men finished the solo 24 hour portion.

 

Elks Win, Blazers' Summer League, Oregon 24 MTB

NBA: 

A glimpse of the Trail Blazers near future could be seen this afternoon as Summer League begins in Las Vegas. Second year guard Shaedon Sharpe and this year's number 3 overall pick Scoot Henderson could get some court time together during the 10 day, 5 game developmental season for rookies and younger players. The Blazers tip-off against Houston at 4.

As Free Agency deals continue, Portland has matched the Dallas Mavericks contract offer to Restricted Free Agent Matisse Thybulle.

College Baseball:

D1 Baseball has picked Oregon State as a likely team to wind up in Omaha next summer at the College World Series. The Beavers are returning a lot of players who came up just short of advancing to the Super Regionals this season. Oregon also received votes.

MLB:

The Mariners beat Houston 5 to 1 last night. All Star George Kirby picked up the win. Eugenio Suarez had 3 hits including a home run. Game 2 of the 4 game series First Pitch is at 5:10 today (Fr)

The Giants welcome last place Colorado for a weekend series. San Francisco is 2 and a half games behind slumping Arizona. The Dodgers have been hot recently and are just a half game out of first place. Rockies vs Giants first pitch is 7:15 tonight.

The 2nd place Portland Thorns play Gotham FC Sunday afternoon.

The Thorns will be without Crystal Dunn and Sophia Smith who will be playing for the U.S. Women’s Team in a friendly against Wales as a final tune-up before a Women’s World Cup match on the 21st.

The Bend Elks jumped out early and held off a 9th inning rally by Yakima Valley last night at Vince Genna Stadium. Bend takes the series against the Pippins and moves to 12 and 15 on the season; 5 and half games out of first. The Elks are in Portland tonight to start a series with the first place Pickles; winners of 8 of their last 10.

The Oregon 24 hour or 12 hour Mountain Bike race is tomorrow and Sunday starting and finishing at Wanoga Sno-Park. Watch for riders and support crews on the trails in that area.

Elks Win In Extras, Beavers Get 2 Commits

NBA: 

Damian Lillard is still a Portland Trail Blazer as of this writing. While insiders say Miami is the most likely destination, a new report said Boston and Utah have expressed interest in Lillard. If a deal does happen it will likely involve more than 2 teams swapping players. 

In other Blazers news,  Restricted Free Agent  Matisse Thybulle has reportedly signed an offer sheet with the Dallas Mavericks.  UPDATE: Portland has matched the Mavs’ Contract.

College Athletics: 

In football recruiting news, Oregon State has had back to back days of verbal commitments for its 2024 class, getting Offensive and Defensive Lineman. Oregon landed a 2024 running back commit earlier in the week.

MLB:

San Francisco shut out Seattle 2 to Zip last night, avoiding the sweep, and staying 3 games behind Arizona. The Giants welcome the last place Rockies for a series starting tomorrow

Blazers Look For Dame Deal, Elks Lose

NBA: 

Damian Lillard to Miami is still the most talked about scenario of the teams that could afford Dame’s contract but the Trail Blazers have not heard the right players offered up in the proposed trade, according to various reports. The Portland Trail Blazers announced the signing of second-round pick Rayan Rupert [RYE-enn roo-PAIR] to his rookie deal.

College Athletics: 

The Pac 12 conference may go to direct subscription to its network after no agreement was apparently reached with a tv provider. College football insiders say the Big 10 is interested in bringing in Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and Cal. USC and UCLA and the Los Angeles television market  leave for the Big 10 next year. Utah and Colorado are reportedly considering a move to the Big 12.

MLB:

Seattle shut out San Francisco 6 to nothing yesterday behind a complete game from Logan Gilbert. The Mariners get to .500 with the win that also saw Mike Ford collect 4 hits including a home run on his birthday. 

The Giants are losers of 7 of their last 10 after the 10 game winning streak and 4 games behind Arizona in 3rd place in the West. Game 3 of the series is tonight at 6:05 with the Ms going for the sweep.

MLB announced yesterday Seattle center fielder Julio Rodríguez and right-hander George Kirby were added to the American League All-Star roster as injury replacements for next Tuesday’s midsummer Classic in Seattle. Former Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman will represent the Orioles and be part of the Home Run Derby this Monday.

Soccer: 

The Portland Timbers match against Colorado was suspended last night in Denver after a lengthy weather delay caused the match to start nearly 2 hours late. The game is scoreless at the half and will be finished at a later date.

Lillard Asks For Trade, Elks Win

NBA: 

Damian Lillard has reportedly asked for a trade. The Portland Trail Blazers are actively taking offers and looking for the most value for their all-star guard, the leading scorer in Trail Blazers history. The Miami Heat have been mentioned in trade talks. 

College Athletics: 

San Diego State has decided to return to the Mountain West conference after notifying conference officials they had intended to leave the conference; presumably for the Pac 12. This has to do with the uncertainty over the Pac 12s’ television rights deal, USC and UCLA leaving, Oregon and Washington potentially leaving the conference.

MLB:

San Francisco lost to the Mets yesterday, dropping the series. The loss dropped the Giants back into 3rd place by a half game behind the Dodgers.

Seattle beat Tampa yesterday to win the series over the Rays. The Mariners remain 2 games below .500 as they travel to San Francisco to start a series with the Giants tonight at 6:45

Soccer: 

The Portland Timbers lost 4 to 1 Minnesota Saturday. The Timbers play Colorado tomorrow night

The Portland Thorns lost to  KC.

The U.S. Men’s National Team beat Trinidad last night to move on to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. 

Local:

The Bend Elks beat Walla Walla last night to win the series against the Sweets. The Elks host Yakima Valley at Vince Genna Stadium tomorrow night…First Pitch is at 6:35.
