(Seattle, WA) -- The Mariners topped the A's 4-2 in Seattle to stay half-a-game back in the AL Wild Card race. Logan Gilbert allowed one run in five-and-two-thirds innings and Diego Castillo earned the win in relief. Jarred Kelenic put the Mariners on the board with a two-run double in the sixth, Ty France hit a sacrifice fly the next inning, and Abraham Toro iced the game with a solo homer in the eighth. Oakland was eliminated from postseason contention with the loss. The Mariners are off today before starting a three-game home series against the Angels tomorrow night.

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The Timbers topped Los Angeles FC 2-1 in SoCal. Yimmi Chará put Portland on the board in the first half and Dairon Asprilla scored in the second half. The Timbers are now fourth in the Western Conference standings with 43 points.

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The Dodgers rattled off four homers in the eighth as they came back to beat the Padres 11-9 in Los Angeles. Max Muncy, AJ Pollock and Cody Bellinger each hit solo bombs to tie the game at 9-apiece. Corey Seager capped off the comeback with a go-ahead two-run blast to give Los Angeles its third straight win. David Price earned his fifth win in relief, while Kenley Jansen notched his 37th save of the year. The Dodgers still trail the Giants by two games for first place in the NL West. They wrap up the series tonight.

(San Francisco, CA) -- The Giants put on a pitching clinic as they edged the Diamondbacks 1-0 in San Francisco. Alex Wood threw six scoreless innings to pick up the win for San Francisco. The Giants held the Diamondbacks to just four hits. Kris Bryant drove in the only run of the game in the seventh inning for the Giants, who have won 104 games. San Francisco still holds a two-game lead over the Dodgers with in the NL West. They wrap up the series tonight.

(Arlington, TX) -- The Angels score five unanswered runs as they beat the Rangers 7-2 in Arlington. Jack Mayfield had two RBI, one which kicked off a four-run rally in the sixth. Juan Lagares plated two runs for Los Angeles, which has split its last four. Janson Junk took a no-decision after allowing two runs in four-and-a-third frames. Jose Quijada picked up his first win in relief, with three strikeouts in an inning of work. The Angels wrap up the series today

(Arlington, TX) -- The Cowboys are making a statement in primetime. Dak Prescott threw for three touchdown as Dallas blasted the Eagles 41-21 in Arlington. Dalton Schultz caught two touchdowns from Prescott while Cedrick Wilson caught the other. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns for the Cowboys, who improve to 2-and-1. Jalen Hurts passed for 326 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions for the Eagles. Fletcher Cox recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown for Philadelphia, which drops to 1-and-2.

(Seattle, WA) -- Mitch Haniger hit two three-run homers in the Mariners 13-4 win over the A's in Seattle. Haniger went deep in the fourth and sixth innings, Ty France recorded four hits, four RBI and three runs scored, and Luis Torrens drove in two runs. Chris Flexen gave up four runs over five innings to pick up the win for Seattle. The series continues tonight.

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Giannis Antetokounmpo [[ YAHN-iss ah-dedo-KOON-bo ]] wants to be a part of another parade. When asked if the Bucks were content after winning the 2021 NBA championship, Antetokounmpo said, "I'm not satisfied. I'm not even close to being satisfied." The Greek superstar also said that he doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last year. Antetokounmpo averaged 35-point-2 points and 13-point-2 rebounds per game in the NBA Finals and won Finals MVP.

(Kansas City, MO) -- Wide receiver Josh Gordon is attempting another NFL comeback. ESPN reports Gordon is planning to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs, after he was informed by the NFL of his reinstatement. The 30-year-old Gordon was suspended indefinitely by the league in January after breaking the terms of his conditional eligibility with the Seattle Seahawks. Since making the Pro Bowl in 2013, Gordon has played on-and-off again in the NFL and missed two full seasons due to suspensions. He's expected to first join Kansas City's practice squad before being promoted to the active roster.

(San Francisco, CA) -- The San Francisco Giants are losing their first baseman right before they head into the postseason. The Athletic reports Brandon Belt suffered a fractured left thumb after he was hit by a pitch in Sunday's game. An X-Ray revealed the fracture and it's expected he will miss the remainder of the regular season. The 33-year-old will meet with team doctors this week to determine a timetable for his return. Belt leads the Giants with 29 home runs this season, while batting .274 with 59 RBI.

(Oakland, CA) -- Oakland A's shortstop Elvis Andrus is done for the season after breaking his leg. Andrus suffered a fractured left fibula as he rounded third base and scored the winning run Saturday over Houston. It is not clear if he will require surgery. Andrus hit .243 this season with 60 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, and 37 RBI. Second baseman Jed Lowrie was also put on the Injured List with a sprained right hand. Lowrie drove in 69 runs for the A's this season in 139 games.

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The Seahawks allowed the Vikings to score 23 unanswered points and lost to Minnesota 30-17 in Minneapolis. Seattle gave up 453 yards of offense to the Vikings. DK Metcalf and Chris Carson scored touchdowns early to put Seattle up 17-7 halfway through the second quarter, but the Vikings took control the rest of the way. Wilson passed for 298 yards and a touchdown for the Seahawks. Carson had 80 rushing yards and Metcalf paced Seattle with 107 receiving yards. The Seahawks have lost two straight to dip to 1-and-2.

(Undated) -- The Oregon State Beavers did something they hadn't done since 1960 over the weekend. The Beavs trounced USC 45-27 in Los Angeles, marking Oregon State's first win in the Coliseum in 61 years. Washington beat Cal 31-24 in overtime on Saturday night and Oregon smoked Arizona 41-19. Wazzu took another L, losing to Utah 24-13 in Salt Lake City.

(Anaheim, CA) -- The Mariners scored four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Angels 5-1 in Anaheim. Shohei Ohtani posted ten strikeouts and gave up one run over seven innings, but took the no-decision and Jose Quijada was tagged with the loss in defeat. The Angels had just three hits, one being a solo shot by Kurt Suzuki. The Angels have split their last four games. They start a road series with the Rangers tomorrow night.

(Santa Clara, CA) -- Aaron Rodgers and the Packers outlasted Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers 30-28 in a thriller on Sunday Night Football in Santa Clara. "Jimmy G" and the Niners took their first lead of the game at 28-27 with just 37-seconds remaining. However, that was more than enough time for Rodgers as he led the Packers on a six-play, 42 yard drive that was capped off by a Mason Crosby 51-yard field goal as time expired. Rodgers finished 23-of-33 for 261 yards and two touchdowns for Green Bay, which has won two straight after opening the season with a 38-3 loss to the Saints. Garoppolo was 25-of-40 for 257 yards and two TD's, but also had an interception and lost a fumble as the Niners fell to 2-and-1.

(Kohler, WI) -- Team USA is celebrating a victory in the 43rd Ryder Cup. The Americans combined for 19 points to claim its 27th Ryder Cup title. It's the first time since 1979-1983 that the Americans have won back-to-back Ryder Cups on home soil. Patrick Cantlay, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Daniel Berger all won their singles matchups, but it was Collin Morikawa that clinched the victory for Team USA.

(Las Vegas, NV) -- Denny Hamlin is hitting the jackpot in Las Vegas. Hamlin held off the field to win the South Point 400 at Las Vegas. With the win, Hamlin is moving on to the round of eight in the NASCAR Playoffs. Chase Elliott finished second. Kyle Busch took third. Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top five.

(Cincinnati, OH) -- The Dodgers are heading out of town as they start a series with the Red this afternoon in Cincinnati. Los Angeles has won six straight and cut the Giants' lead in the NL West to one game. They send Walker Buehler to the mound for the opener. The All-Star sports a 14-and-3 record with a 2.32 E-R-A this year. Opposite him is Luis Castillo for Cincinnati. The righty is 7-and-15 with a 4.24 earned run average.

(Chicago, IL) -- Alex Cobb and Jack Mayfield came to play in the Angels 9-3 win over the White Sox in Chicago. Cobb recorded five strikeouts over five scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Angels, who have split their last four games. Mayfield drove in four runs, and Luis Rengifo and Jose Rojas each hit two-run homers. Los Angeles starts a home series with the A's tonight.

(San Francisco, CA) -- Fernando Tatis Jr. launched his 39th homer as the Padres beat the Giants 7-4 in San Francisco. The shortstop hit a solo bomb for San Diego, which split the series with the victory. Evan Longoria homered for San Francisco, which has lost back-to-back. Kevin Gausman suffered his sixth loss, allowing four runs over five innings.

(Henderson, NV) -- The Raiders are losing their backup quarterback for the next couple weeks. The NFL Network reports Marcus Mariota will miss at least a few weeks after aggravating his quadriceps during a run in Week One. Mariota picked up 31 yards on the ground, but now leaves Las Vegas without its backup QB. The Raiders will turn to Nathan Peterman as the backup to Derek Carr moving forward.

Week Three of college football is here as the action kicks off this weekend. Number-4 Oregon hosts Stony Brook Saturday at 4:30 on KBND. 13th-ranked UCLA welcomes Fresno State to the Rose Bowl on Saturday night. USC hits the road as it ventures up North to Pullman to face off with Washington State. The Trojans were upset last week against Stanford, leading to the dismissal of head coach Clay Helton. Cal plays host to Sacramento State as it still seeks its first win of the season. Stanford rounds out the action as the Cardinal visits Vanderbilt in Nashville.

(Chicago, IL) -- The Angels hung on for a 3-2 win over the White Sox in Chicago. Brandon Marsh broke a late tie in the eighth inning after he launched his second home run of the season. Mike Mayers was credited with the win and Raisel Iglesias earned his 32nd save of the year. The Angels bullpen combined for eight strikeouts over the final three innings. They wrap up the series today.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers avoided a loss thanks to an extra time goal from Sebastián Blanco.  Portland drew the Colorado Rapids 2-2 in Providence Park.  Blanco found the back of the net down 2-1 in extra time, and Felipe Mora put the Timbers on the board in the 67th minute.  Portland is now fifth in the MLS Western Conference with 34 points.

(San Francisco, CA)  --  The Giants keep on rolling.  Buster Posey homered as the Giants hammered the Padres 6-1 in San Francisco.  Brandon Belt, Tommy La Stella, and Darin Ruf also drove in runs for San Francisco.  Anthony DeSclafani allowed just one run over six-and-two-thirds innings to earn the win for the Giants, who have won nine straight.  They continue the series tonight.

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland State head coach Bruce Barnum is feeling generous.  In an interview on 750 The Game, Barnum said he will buy beer for all who attend Portland State's home opener on Saturday.  The Vikings host Western Oregon on Saturday at 2 PM in Hillsboro Stadium.

(Chicago, IL)  --  Jared Walsh hit his 27th homer of the year as the Angels fell 9-3 to the White Sox in Chicago.  The first baseman hit a two-run shot in the fourth, while Phil Gosselin mashed a solo shot in the first.  Packy Naughton took his second loss, surrendering four runs in two-and-two-thirds innings.  Los Angeles has lost four of its last five and continues the series today.  

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  USC could be eyeing a Kansas City Chiefs' coach for its coaching vacancy.  ESPN reports Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has emerged as a candidate to become the Trojans next head coach.  Bieniemy, who is from Southern California, has said in the past that USC is one of few college jobs that would interest him.  The Trojans fired longtime head coach Clay Helton on Monday and are conducting a national search for his replacement over the next several months. 

(White Sulphur Springs, WV)  --  The San Francisco 49ers are losing their starting running back for the season.  Raheem Mostert announced on his social media Tuesday that he will undergo season-ending knee surgery and miss the 2021 season.  San Francisco originally estimated the running back would miss eight weeks with "chipped cartilage" after Mostert got injured in the first quarter of the team's season opener.  Mostert missed eight games last season with knee and ankle injuries and is in the final season of his three-year contract.  

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  The Dodgers are booking their ticket into the postseason.  Tony Gonsolin threw five shutout innings as Los Angeles beat the Diamondbacks 8-4 in Los Angeles.  The right-hander allowed only two hits and struck out six to earn his third win of the year.  Max Muncy, Trea Turner and Will Smith all homered for the Dodgers, who have won five straight and became the second team to clinch a playoff spot.  Ketel Marte racked up three hits and three RBI for Arizona, which has lost eight of its last 10.  Luke Weaver was dealt his fifth loss, allowing four runs over four frames. 

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon will be without one of its best offensive players for the rest of the season.  Former Summit Storm player and current Ducks tight end Cam McCormick suffered a season-ending right leg injury in Oregon's 35-28 win over Ohio State.  The Bend native caught one pass for 16 yards against the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes are 9-and-0 against the Ducks, all time, with the latest win coming in the college football playoff championship game in 2015 in Dallas with Ohio State claiming a 42-20 win over Oregon.

The two teams were to play last fall in Eugene, but because of COVID-19 that game was cancelled. Tomorrow, the 12th ranked Ducks and Buckeyes meet in Columbus where Oregon last played in 1987.

Elsewhere among PAC-12 teams, Oregon State hosts Hawaii in an 8pm kickoff tomorrow night televised on Fox Sports One.

(Eugene, OR) -- Oregon Ducks fans are mourning the death of a longtime coaching legend at the University of Oregon -- Joe Schaffeld -- who passed away this week.  Schaffeld was 85 when he died Monday.  Schaffeld played for the Ducks when the team played in the Rose Bowl in 1958.  He started his coaching career with Oregon in 1974 and spent 24 seasons as an assistant coach.  Schaffeld helped lead the Ducks back to Pasadena in 1994.  The Oregon football program memorialized Schaffeld with an award that's handed out each year to the team's top defensive lineman.  There's a room at the team's football complex that's named after him as well.

(Oakland, CA)  --  Sean Manaea had White Sox batters dancing at the plate all day as the Athletics topped Chicago 3-1 in Oakland.  Manaea pitched seven innings and struck out nine while allowing just one run.  Matt Chapman and Tony Kemp drove in runs for Oakland, which took two-of-three in the series.  The A's stay home to start a series with the Rangers tonight. 

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Trea Turner was a lone bright spot as the Dodgers fell 2-1 to the Cardinals in St. Louis.  The shortstop recorded two hits and an RBI  for Los Angeles, which has split its last four.  The Dodgers were held to four hits and split the series after winning the first two games.  Tony Gonsolin tossed three innings in his return from the injured list and Phil Bickford suffered his second loss in relief.  The Dodgers return home to host the Padres tonight. 

(Houston, TX)  --  With the game tied at four apiece in the ninth, the Mariners scored four runs in the final inning to beat the Astros 8-5 in Houston.  Jose Marmolejos hit a two-run single and JP Crawford hit a two-run homer in the ninth for Seattle.  Abraham Toro and Jarred Kelenic each hit two-run doubles as well.  Tyler Anderson gave up four runs in four-and-two-thirds innings and Diego Castillo earned the win in relief after striking out the side in the eighth inning.  The Mariners are off today before hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks tomorrow night.

(San Pedro Sula, Honduras) -- The United States Men's National Soccer Team is celebrating their first victory in World Cup qualifiers.  Ricardo Pepi led the way for the U.S. with a goal and three assists to help lift his country to a 4-1 win.  The FC Dallas star became the second youngest player in the history of the men's national team to appear in a World Cup qualifier.  Honduras scored the first goal of the match in the 27th minute before the U.S. stormed back with four unanswered in the second half.  The men's national team is now tied with Panama and Canada for second place in the table with five points.  Mexico leads the way with seven points.

(Undated)  --  The 2021 NFL regular season will kick off tonight in Tampa.  The defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers will fire the cannons and raise their second Super Bowl banner in franchise history as they host the Dallas Cowboys.  It will be 44-year-old Tom Brady leading the Bucs against the returning Dak Prescott and the Cowboys.  The rest of the action will be on Sunday, when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs host the Cleveland Browns.  The Green Bay Packers will clash with the New Orleans Saints in Jacksonville after the game was moved as a result of Hurricane Ida.  Hearts will be heavy as the New York Giants plan to honor those who gave their lives on 9/11 when they host the Denver Broncos 20 years after one of the deadliest tragedies in American history.  Sunday night, the Chicago Bears visit the Los Angeles Rams.  Monday night, it's time for the Las Vegas Raiders and Baltimore Ravens to roll the dice in Sin City.

(Flushing, NY)  --  The US Open continues as the best tennis players in the world compete in New York.  On the men's side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic moved one step closer to completing his calendar-year Grand Slam with a four-set win over sixth-seeded Matteo Berrettini.  Number-4 seed Alexander Zverev cruised to the Semifinals with a straight-set win over Lloyd Harris.  The two will join Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev as the final four men remaining in the field.  On the women's side, 17th-seeded Maria Sakkari booked her ticket to the Semifinals with a two-set sweep of Number-4 seed Karolina Pliskova.  18-year-old Emma Raducanu has yet to drop a set in the tournament as she beat 11th-ranked Belinda Bencic to advance.  Raducanu is the second teenager in the Semifinals, joining 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez.  Rounding out the final four women is Number-2 seed Aryna Sabalenka.  
 

(Cooperstown, NY)  --  "Mr. November" is officially immortalized in Cooperstown.  Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and former Players Association boss Marvin Miller were all inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday.  Jeter closed his speech with "It's been a hell of a ride" to a crowd that was full of Yankees fans.  Jeter spent his entire 20-year career with the Yankees, where he won five championships, made 14 All-Star games and won the AL Rookie of the Year in 1996.  Walker, who hit .313 with 383 career homers and won the 1997 NL MVP in his 17-year career, became the second Canadian-born Hall of Famer and the first player to be enshrined as a member of the Colorado Rockies.  Simmons was selected by an era committee during the 2019 winter meetings and made eight All-Star teams as a catcher with the Cardinals and Brewers in the 70s and 80s.  Miller, who passed away in 2012, had his speech given by his MLBPA successor Donald Fehr.  

(Eugene, OR)  --  Some good news out of the Oregon program as linebacker Justin Flowe was named Pac-12 freshman of the week.  Flowe had 14 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and a forced fumble in Oregon's 31-24 win over Fresno State.  Elsewhere, Ducks defensive backs DJ James and Jamal Hill have agreed to a court diversion program for shooting off airsoft guns in downtown Eugene in early August.  Both James and Hill have been approved by the program to play against Ohio State on Saturday.  In other new, the Ducks men's basketball team will also play the defending national champion Baylor Bears in Eugene on December 18th.

(Houston, TX)  --  The Mariners led 4-2 in the ninth but still lost to the Astros 5-4 in 10 innings in Houston.  Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer in the ninth and Carlos Correa walked it off for the Astros with an RBI double in the bottom of the 10th.  JP Crawford hit a two-run double in the fifth, Kyle Seager hit a solo shot in the sixth and Luis Torrens hit an RBI single in the ninth.  Logan Gilbert allowed two runs in four-and-one-third innings and Yohan Ramirez took the loss.  The series wraps up this morning.  Seattle also announced yesterday that Kyle Lewis has a bone bruise in his right knee and is out for the season.  

(Denver, CO)  --  Logan Webb provided a strong outing as the Giants toppled the Rockies 12-3 in Denver.  The right-hander struck out six over seven innings of three-run ball to earn his ninth win.  Mike Yastrzemski and Steven Duggar each recorded three RBI for San Francisco, which has won three straight.  Brandon Crawford had three of the Giants' 15 total hits in the winning effort.  They wrap up the series with Colorado this afternoon.  

(San Diego, CA)  --  Jo Adell knocked in three runs as the Angels beat the Padres 4-0 in San Diego.  Adell broke a no-hit bid by Blake Snell with his two-RBI single in the seventh.  Luis Rengifo homered in the ninth to add insurance for Los Angeles, which has won three of its last five.  Jimmy Herget earned his second win in relief, tossing a pair of scoreless innings.  The Angels wrap up the series tonight.  

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Albert Pujols homered in his return to St. Louis as the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals 7-2.  In his first game at Busch Stadium since 2019, Pujols launched a solo shot in his first at-bat.  Justin Turner also went deep with a pair of home runs for Los Angeles, which has won three of its last four.  Will Smith hit his 23rd homer with a solo shot in the sixth.  Alex Vesia picked up his third win out the bullpen as the Dodgers used nine pitchers in the game.  They continue the series this afternoon.  

Taking a look at the opening week results from last Friday and the weekend:

First, in the 6-A, the Bend Lava Bears made a statement with its home stomping of Grants Pass beating the Cavemen, 27-7.

Mt. View had no problems handling Century in a 42-22 win for the Cougars in Hillsboro.

Summit's game at Roseburg was pushed back to Saturday night because of smokey conditions in Douglas County. Roseburg notched a 23-7 win over the Storm.

Elsewhere under the Friday night lights and smoke, Ridgeview defeated Crook County in Prineville, 26-20. Redmond lost its opener on the road at Central, 40-to-24.

And, both Sisters and Madras' home games were cancelled because of COVID issues with their opponents.

But, it was smoke in LaPine Friday night that postponed the 2nd half of the Lapine vs. Cascade Christian game with the home team Hawks trailing, 7-zip. That game did not resume Saturday as planned.

One other game in the 2-A level saw Culver lose at Weston-McEwen, 43-6.

In college football, the Ducks kicked off their season at home; holding off Fresno State, 31-24.

The Beavers used two quarterbacks and lost at Purdue, 30-to-21.

Washington was shocked by Montana, 13-7. Kansas state thumped Stanford, 24-7

UCLA scored a huge upset win beating LSU in the Rose Bowl, 38-27.

USC ran past San Jose State, 30-to-7.

Cal lost to Nevada, 22-17. BYU got by Arizona, 21-16. And, Utah state stopped Washington state, 26-23.

In top rated games, #1 Alabama cruised past Miami of Florida, 44-13. #2 Oklahoma edged Tulane, 40-35, 3rd Clemson lost to #5 Georgia, 10-3, and 6th ranked Texas A&M downed Kent State, 41-10.

(Eugene, OR)  --  It's looking like Kayvon Thibodeaux's ankle sprain may not be that bad.  Mario Cristobal said his injury is "day-to-day" ahead of the Ducks road matchup vs. Ohio State on Saturday.  Cristobal also said defensive backs DJ James and Jamal Hill will be back this week after missing Week One because they were suspended for allegedly shooting airsoft guns in downtown Eugene last month.  Elsewhere in Oregon, Jonathan Smith said the Beavers starting quarterback will be decided late in the week, as he decides between Sam Noyer and Chance Nolan.  Oregon State hosts Hawaii on Saturday night.

(Anaheim, CA)  --  Hits were hard to come by as the Angels fell 4-0 to the Rangers in Anaheim.  Los Angeles mustered only five hits, with Jared Walsh leading the way with two.  Jaime Barria allowed just three runs over seven innings to take the loss for Los Angeles, which has dropped two straight.  The Angels split the series and head to San Diego to start a series with the Padres tonight.  

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Max Scherzer continues to dominate in Dodger blue as the Dodgers beat the Cardinals 5-1 in St. Louis.  Scherzer struck out 13 batters over eight scoreless frames to pick up his 13th win of the year.  Chris Taylor hit a two-run homer, while Mookie Betts and Corey Seager each added an RBI for Los Angeles, which has won five of its last seven.  They continue the series with St. Louis this afternoon. 

(Denver, CO)  --  Kevin Gausman shined on the mound as the Giants defeated the Rockies 10-5 in Denver.  The All-Star pitcher struck out nine over seven frames to earn his 13th win of the season.  He also chipped in at the plate with a hit, RBI and run scored for San Francisco, which has won four of its last five.  Thairo Estrada mashed a pair of home runs, while Darin Ruf and Buster Posey each added solo shots.  The Giants continue the series tonight.  

(Flushing, NY)  --  The US Open continues as the best tennis players in the world compete in New York.  On the men's side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic overcame a rough first set to take down American Jenson Brooksby in four sets.  Number-4 seed Alexander Zverev [[ zeh-ruhv ]] cruised to the Quarterfinals with a straight-set win over Jannik Sinner.  Number-22 seed Reilly Opelka was eliminated in a four-set loss, leaving no Americans left in the tournament. On the women's side, Shelby Rogers was upset in a straight-set loss to 18-year-old Emma Raducanu.  She was the final American women left in the field.  Number-4 seed Karolina Pliskova [[ pleesh-kow-vuh ]] and Number-11 seed Belinda Bencic each advanced to the Quarterfinals with two-set victories.  
 

(Undated)  --  The alleged fake school that made its way on to ESPN for a high school football game is now making it clear it is indeed not a school.  New Bishop Sycamore head coach Tyren Jackson told NBC4 of Columbus that the program doesn't provide a curriculum to its players, nor is it a school.  Jackson says the mistake that featured a team of players, who may or may not be of eligible age, boils down to a paperwork issue.  Jackson used the phrase "post-grad academy" to describe the program.  The school has become a viral sensation after they were thoroughly embarrassed 58-0 by IMG Academy of Florida on ESPN which led to the subsequent firing of head coach Roy Johnson, who reportedly has an active arrest warrant.  Allegations were made that the players consisted of junior college drop outs as well as the fact they were sleeping on the floors of hotels in addition to other disturbing claims.

On the college gridiron last night, 4th ranked ohio state held off Minnesota outscoring the golden gophers, 45-31.

#24 Utah outscored Weber (wee-ber) state, 40-to-17 in a game delayed for one hour because of thunder and lightning in salt lake city.

25th ranked Arizona state ran past southern utah, 41-14. 

Boise state with new head coach Andy Avalos who left the ducks staff last winter lost at central Florida, 36-31. That game was also delayed because of weather in Orlando.
And, eastern Washington in double overtime slipped by unlv, 35-33 at allegiant stadium in sin city.

Coming up today at 3pm, 10th ranked north Carolina visits Virginia tech on ESPN, followed by Michigan state playing at northwestern.

Colorado of the pac-12 hosts Northern cColorado at 6 on the pac-12 network.

Tomorrow morning here on kbnd, the Oregon Ducks kick off their season in an 11am start hosting Fresno state.

The high school football season kicks off tonight in its regular season, unlike what we experienced seeing the season postponed last fall because of the corona virus, and schools playing a shortened schedule this past march and April.

Tonight, in the high desert, the Bend Lava Bears welcome the Grants Pass Cavemen while summit travels to Roseburg, and Mt. View plays at Century in Hillsboro.

Elsewhere tonight, in the 5a classification, Ridgeview plays at Crook County, and Redmond travels to west Salem to face Central High.

In class 4a openers, Sisters welcomes burns and madras greets corbett.

Meantime, Lapine hosts Cascade Christian of Medford in the 3a division.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Blazers are bringing in a former NBA lottery pick.  ESPN reported that Portland signed guard Dennis Smith Jr. to a deal to play in training camp with the team.  Smith was picked ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2017 NBA draft.  Smith averaged 6.7 points per game last year in 23 games with the Knicks and Pistons.

(Detroit, MI)  --  The A's jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held on to beat the Tigers 8-6 in Detroit.  Jed Lowrie hit a three-run bomb and Mark Canha added a solo shot in the first inning and Yan Gomes hit a two-RBI double.  Frankie Montas posted seven strikeouts and allowed three earned runs in six-and-two-thirds innings to pick up the win for Oakland, which has won four of its past five games.  

(Houston, TX)  --  The Timbers are back in action tonight in a road match against Houston Dynamo FC.  Portland beat the Sounders 2-0 in its last game on Sunday.  The Timbers are sixth in the MLS Eastern Conference with 27 points.

(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks are adding a former hooper to their practice squad.  Seattle signed former Baylor basketball player Mark Vital to the practice squad on Thursday.  Vital is listed as 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds on Baylor's team website.  He helped the Bears win the 2021 men's basketball championship and averaged 5.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as a senior last year.  Vital told KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, Louisiana, that he's already been compared to Antonio Gates by scouts and added "I feel like I can be a Hall of Famer". 

(Atlanta, GA)  --  Patrick Cantlay is tallying four birdies and a bogey to maintain a two-shot lead atop the Tour Championship after one round.  One week after the BMW Championship and earning a two-shot advantage to start the Tour Championship, Cantlay finished with a three-under 67 to maintain his lead over Jon Rahm.  Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau are tied for third place at eight-under.  A three-way tie among Justin Thomas, Viktor Hovland, and Cameron Smith rounds out the top five at seven-under.

(Flushing, NY)  --  The US Open continues as the best tennis players in the world compete in New York.  On the men's side, top-seed Novak Djokovic won in straight sets to advance to continue his bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam.  American Reilly Opelka advanced to Round Three with his three-set win over Lorenzo Musetti.  Number-4 seed Alexander Zverev cruised to victory, while American Maxime Cressy was eliminated from the tournament.  On the women's side, top-ranked Ashleigh Barty rolled to a straight-set win over Clara Tauson.  Americans Shelby Rogers and Jessica Pegula each won to advance to the third round.  Lauren Davis was ousted in a two-set loss to sixth-seeded Bianca Andreescu.  

(Darlington, SC)  --  The road to the championship begins for the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday.  The Cook Out Southern 500 will take place from Darlington as the 16 drivers in the playoffs work their way toward the next round.  Ryan Blaney is on the pole for the race while Denny starts in second.  Kurt Busch will start third while Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman round out the top five in the starting grid.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners could barely muster a hit, but their pitching staff was so good it didn't matter.  Despite finishing with just three hits, Seattle beat the Astros 1-0 in T-Mobile Park to clinch the series.  Logan Gilbert was fantastic in his start for the Mariners, striking out four over five scoreless innings.  Justus Sheffield picked up the win in relief and Paul Sewald had three strikeouts in his four-out save for Seattle.  Abraham Toro drove in the Mariners' only run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.  Seattle is off today before starting a three-game road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks tomorrow night.

(San Francisco, CA)  --  The bullpen faltered late as the Giants fell 5-2 to the Brewers in San Francisco.  Dominic Leone allowed the go-ahead run in the seventh to take his third loss in relief.  Kris Bryant added two hits and an RBI for San Francisco.  Buster Posey hit an RBI single, but the Giants managed to plate only 2-of-14 runners in scoring position.  They fall to second in the NL West and wrap up the series with Milwaukee this afternoon. 

(Anaheim, CA)  --  Gerrit Cole sat 15 batters down via strikeout as the Yankees beat the Angels 4-1 in Anaheim.  The All-Star right-hander set a season-high in punchouts and allowed only one run over seven frames of action. David Fletcher had two hits and an RBI for Los Angeles, which had won three straight coming in.  Packy Naughton took the loss in his major league debut, allowing six hits and three runs.  The Angels host the Rangers for a series starting tomorrow night.  

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  AJ Pollock played the hero as the Dodgers beat the Braves 4-3 in Los Angeles.  Pollock hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth after Justin Turner tied the game earlier in the inning.  Max Muncy and Austin Barnes delivered solo shots for Los Angeles, which has won three straight.  Max Scherzer struck out nine over six scoreless frames, but took a no-decision.  Phil Bickford got his third win, with Joe Kelly securing his second save.  The Dodgers moved to first place in the NL West and start a pivotal series with the Giants tomorrow night. 

(Detroit, MI)  --  Matt Olson knocked in three runs as the Athletics lost 8-6 to the Tigers in Detroit.  Olson and Jed Lowrie batted in runs in the fifth to give Oakland a 6-3 lead.  The A's went on to allow five unanswered runs, with A.J. Puk taking his second loss and second blown save.  Josh Harrison added three hits and two runs scored for Oakland, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.  The A's wrap up the series with Detroit today. 

(Atlanta, GA) -- Dustin Johnson looks to defend his Tour Championship title starting today at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.  Patrick Reed returns to play after being hospitalized with bilateral pneumonia last week.  Reed tees off the tournament with Billy Horschel.  The winner of last week's BMW Championship, Patrick Cantlay, begins his quest for another tournament victory with Tony Finau.  Cantlay starts the tournament at ten-under, Finau is eight-under, DeChambeau is seven-under, Jon Rahm is six-under, and Cameron Smith closes out the top five starting positions at five-under par.  

(Flushing, NY)  --  The US Open is officially underway as the best tennis players in the world compete in New York.  On the men's side, second-seeded Daniil Medvedev won in straight sets to advance to Round Three.  Number-3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was strong with a four-set win over Adrian Mannarino.  Americans Marcos Giron and Brandon Nakashima were both ousted from the tournament on Wednesday.  On the women's side, Sloane Stephens was victorious in the much-anticipated showdown with fellow American Coco Gauff.  Stephens pulled out a two-set sweep to advance to the Third Round.  Defending US Open champion Naomi Osaka advanced after her opponent, Olga Danilovic withdrew with an illness.  Simona Halep and Aryna Sabalenka each won in straight sets to move into Round Three action.

(Portland, OR)  --  Timbers midfielder Eryk Williamson is out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.  He suffered the injury in Portland's 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.  The Timbers announced that Williamson will have surgery on the injury this week.

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  Mookie Betts homered as the Dodgers came back to beat the Braves 3-2 in Los Angeles.  Betts went deep in the fourth for his 19th homer of the year.  Los Angeles tied things in the seventh, before Corey Seager hit a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth.   The Dodgers have won three of their last four and cut the Giants lead in the NL West to half-a-game.  They wrap up the series with Atlanta tonight.  
 

(Seattle, WA)  --  It took just one hit for the Mariners to beat the Astros 4-0 in Seattle.  With the game locked in a scoreless tie in the eight, Abraham Toro mashed a grand slam that essentially iced the game for Seattle.  Yusei Kikuchi was a big reason why the Mariners needed just one big hit to win because he tossed seven scoreless innings that kept Seattle in the game.  The series wraps up this afternoon.

(Anaheim, CA)  --  Shohei Ohtani continues to steal the show, this time stealing home on a double-steal in the Angels' 6-4 victory over the Yankees.  The steal of home was Ohtani's second swipe of the game and 22nd of the season, part of a five-steal night for Los Angeles.  Jared Walsh hit his 25th home run to give the Angels the lead for good in the fourth inning.  The Angels have won their last three games and wrap up the series this afternoon. 

(San Francisco, CA)  --  Brandon Belt was a bright spot in the Giants' 6-2 loss to the Brewers in San Francisco.  The first baseman launched a solo homer with Wilmer Flores doing the same.  San Francisco was 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and has lost four of its last five.  Johnny Cueto was charged his seventh loss, allowing six runs in three-and-two-thirds frames.  The Giants continue the series with Milwaukee tonight.

(Foxborough, MA)  --  The New England Patriots are releasing three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Cam Newton.  He signed a one year, five-million-dollar contract with the Patriots in March after spending last season with the team as well.  Newton rushed for 12 touchdowns and threw for 2,657 yards in his lone season with the franchise.  New England is rolling with Mac Jones as its new starting QB. 

(Detroit, MI)  --  Matt Chapman mashed a pair of longballs as the Athletics beat the Tigers 9-3 in Detroit.  Chapman launched a two-run shot in the third, then followed it with a solo bomb in the ninth for Oakland, which has won three straight.  Josh Harrison and Mark Canha each added a pair of RBI in the victory.  Cole Irvin allowed three runs over four-and-two-thirds frames but took a no-decision.  Deolis Guerra got his third win in relief.  The A's continue the road series tonight.  

(Flushing, NY)  --  The US Open continues as the best tennis players in the world compete in New York.  On the men's side, world number-1 Novak Djokovic won his opening match with a four-set victory over Holger Rune.  Fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev cruised past American Sam Querrey in a three-set sweep.  Ninth-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta was upset in five-sets by Maxime Cressy.  On the women's side, top-seeded Ashleigh Barty advanced to Round Two with a two-set win over Vera Zvonareva.  American woman Amanda Anisimova was victorious, setting her up with a match against Number-4 seed Karolina Pliskova on Thursday.

(Queens, NY)  --  A pair of New York Mets players are apologizing for "booing" the team's fans with their thumbs-down gesture.  Both Javy Baez and Francisco Lindor said their "thumbs-down" celebration after getting hits was intended to keep the team close and focused.  This follows Baez' comments on Sunday in which he said the "thumbs-down" was a boo towards the fans and their criticisms.  It's been a rough second half of the year for the Mets who were in first place for months but now trail both the Phillies and Braves.
