Timbers Win... Ms Win... Ducks Ready

College Football:

Oregon coach Dan Lanning says he’s pleased with his team’s progress from Fall Camp to Game week preparations. He also says the team is excited to be in Autzen with the fans … Saturday’s pregame starts at 10 leading up to kick off at Noon against Portland State and then all the reaction in the post-game. A programming note for KBND Financial Focus will air Sunday at 1.

Baseball: Oregon State announced Zak Taylor, a former OSU  infielder and 2018 National Champion, has joined the Oregon State staff as the Director of Beaver Baseball Personnel.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks claimed two defensive players off of waivers shoring up the cornerback and linebacker corps. The Seahawks also signed a couple of rookie defenders to the practice squad.

In San Francisco…a local reporter says the 49ers and hold-out defensive end Nick Bosa will come to an agreement on a contract deal and Bosa should be suited up for Week 1 against Pittsburgh.

MLB:

Seattle came back to beat Oakland 5 to 4 yesterday with a three run homer from Teoscar Hernandez and a two-run Knock by J. P. Crawford in the 7th that ended up being the game winner. Julio Rodriguez sat again with a pinched nerve in his foot. The Mariners finished 21 and 6 for the month giving them their best August in team history. They’re back in first in  the AL West tied with Houston. The Mets are in Seattle for a series starting Friday.

The Giants lost 4 to 1 to Cincinnati yesterday. They’re still in the last wildcard spot. The Giants go to San Diego for a four game series starting  tonight at 6:40

Soccer:

The Portland Timbers beat Real Salt Lake 2 to 1 last night.

The Portland Thorns’ Sofia Smith has a knee sprain from Sunday’s match…She is listed as week to week.

College Football:

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning told his media availability he expects the usual start to a season opener as far as managing expectations but said he wants his team to create explosive plays on offense and takeaways on defense. Some of the defensive players are still getting healthy. Hear more from Lanning on the Oregon Coaches show tonight at 7 on KBND. Oregon State coach Jonathon Smith told his media press conference he’s happy with the current health of his players being mostly free from injury. Looking ahead towards San Jose State he acknowledged the challenges of playing on the road to start the season but said it’s a good test. He admitted the advantage the Spartans have with a game under their belts. That was a loss to USC last Saturday. Kick off is Sunday at 12:30

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks cut down to their 53 player roster yesterday. All this year’s draft picks made the team, along with two undrafted free agents. The rookies and 2nd year players make up 20 of the 53.

In San Francisco…The biggest name not on the final 53 is Defensive End Joey Bosa who is on the Reserved/Did Not Report list as he remains in a contract hold-out

MLB:

The Giants nearly no-hit Cincinnati last night. Pitcher Alex Cobb was one out away when he gave up an RBI double for the only Reds run. San Francisco's 6-1 victory and the Diamondbacks loss moves them back into 2nd in the NL West, and back into the last Wildcard spot. S F goes for the series sweep today. Game 3 against the Reds is at 12:45.

Seattle threatened in the 9th but came up short against Oakland last night managing only 2 hits in the 3 to 1 loss. That drops the Mariners into a 3 way tie for first in the AL West with Texas and Houston. Game 3 As vs Ms First pitch is at 1:10 today.

Soccer:

The Portland Timbers try to get back in the win column against Real Salt Lake tonight at 7:30.

Local:

Ms Win...No Pac 4 decision yet...High School Schedule

College Football:

The latest on the Pac 12 conference realignment is the timeline on any decision could be later than Labor Day. Cal and Stanford are still trying to work a deal into the ACC. Oregon State and Washington State still are being courted by the Mountain West and the American Athletic. Various reports indicate there won’t be any sort of Pac 12 conference next season.

Oregon’s season opener is Saturday. The 15th ranked Ducks are at Autzen against Portland State. Seattle shut out Oakland 7 to nothing last night keeping a 1 game lead in the AL West.  It was a 4 for 5 night for Julio Rodriguez with a homerun and 3 RBI. Game 2 As vs Ms First pitch is at 6:40 tonight.

The Giants beat Cincinnati 4 to1 yesterday. Rookie Wade Meckler had an RBI. San Francisco remains 3rd in the NL West, a game and half behind the Diamondbacks in the division and a game behind the Cubs for that last Wildcard spot. Game 2 against the Reds is at 6:45 tonight.

Local:

Volleyball: Caldera and Crook County are playing at Sisters, Redmond takes on South Salem; Summit’s in a tournament at Sheldon , La Pine hosts Burns; Central Christian and Trinity Lutheran are also in action.

Girls soccer: Crook County at Sisters, Mountain View at Silverton, Summit hosts North Medford , Ridgeview at Mountainside

College Football:

Week Zero is in the books. USC started off looking dominant by walloping San Jose State.

Oregon State linebacker Cory Stover says the defense feels confident about the season, especially with so much experience at all positions. 18th ranked OSU’s first game is Sunday the 3rd at San Jose State.

The Heisman Hype for Ducks’ Quarterback Bo Nix continues with a full page ad in the Sunday edition of the New York Times. Oregon’s season opener is Saturday the 2nd. NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks had a lot of good game experience in Green Bay on Saturday according to coach Pete Carrol. He said the Packers fans were able to create regular season game scenarios for the back up players who saw a lot of time against Green Bay’s starters early in the contest. Tomorrow rosters go from 90 players to the regular season 53. 16 will be assigned to the practice squad. The Rams will be in Seattle September 10th in a key early season division match-up.

In San Francisco the trade of quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas on Friday led to much media and fan chatter over the weekend about dealing the former number 3 overall pick who the 49ers gave up three 1st round picks for back in 2021… and there is speculation what that means for the futures of GM John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan. Starter Brock Purdy will be backed up by Sam Darnold when the 49ers open the season September 10th at Pittsburg

MLB:

Seattle held off the Royals 3 to 2 yesterday to get the sweep of KC and take a 1 game lead in the AL West.  Luis Castillo picked up his 11th win. The Mariners were 10 games behind Texas 5 weeks ago but winning 9 of their last 10 and the Rangers losing 9 of their last 10 has pushed them into the division lead; something that looked unlikely at the trade deadline. They could extend that lead with series coming up against Oakland and the Mets this week. As vs Ms First pitch is at 6:40 tonight.

The Giants beat Atlanta 8 to 5 yesterday to avoid the sweep. San Francisco remains 3rd in the NL West, a game and half behind the Diamondbacks in the division and more importantly that last Wildcard spot. S-F hosts another team who has had August Swoon in the Cincinnati Reds. First pitch is at 6:45 tonight.

Soccer:

Different coach, same result as the Portland Timbers lost to Vancouver 3 to 2 Saturday night, sinking further out of playoff contention. It’s a quick turn around for the Timbers as they play Real Salt Lake Wednesday night.

The Portland Thorns tied with Washington yesterday 1-1. The Draw keeps them on top of the NWSL standings but the Thorns lost Sofia Smith to an apparent leg Injury. She was seen on crutches and will be evaluated.   Smith leads the League in goals, and is second in assists.

College Football:

Oregon’s season opener is next Saturday, September 2nd. The 15th ranked Ducks are at Autzen against Portland State. Coach Dan Lanning and Quarterback Bo Nix both recently said they would have to execute well against the Vikings, and don’t want to overlook them at their Week 2 match up at Texas Tech.  The Ducks begin game preparation practices today. 

Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith told the media yesterday camp is wrapped, and the Beavs will begin game prep practices going forward. Which means a lot less live hitting drills. 18th ranked OSU’s first game is next Sunday, September 3rd at San Jose State.

A Yahoo sports report says Mountain West and American Athletic Conference presidents are presenting expansion pitches to Oregon State and Washington State officials, as it looks more likely that Stanford and Cal will go to the ACC. 

NBA: 

Damian Lillard told Andscape's Marc J. Spears he did request a trade to the Miami Heat this summer. Lillard said he wouldn’t speak any more about the Trail Blazers though.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks will have first round pick Devon Witherspoon back at practice next week. Coach Pete Carrol said the cornerback is recovering from his most recent hamstring injury. The final preseason tune-up is tomorrow morning in Green Bay starting at 10.

49ers GM John Lynch told San Francisco’s KNBR radio Thursday Quarterback Trey Lance might get traded if there’s a good offer but will likely start the season on the roster. Lance should see a good amount of playing time tonight, maybe showcasing for potential teams, although backup Sam Darnold will also see significant first half action in the final preseason game against the Chargers. Kick off at 7.

MLB:

The Giants are a half game out of the Wild Card…and tied with the Diamondbacks for 2nd but are 12 and half games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. They're back in S F to play Atlanta. They still hold the best record in baseball since the Giants played them last weekend. FIrst pitch tonight is at 7:15. 

Seattle moved ahead of Houston thanks to the Astros' loss to the Red Sox yesterday for both the 2nd wild card spot and 2nd place in the AL West. The Mariners are back at T-Mobile Park today to take on the Royals. First pitch is at 7:10.

Soccer:

The Portland Timbers play Vancouver tomorrow night at 7:30

Beavs' Uiagalelei, Ducks' Nix On Unitas QB Watchlist

College Football: 

Fresh off getting the starting nod at quarterback Oregon State’s DJ Uiagalelei has been named to the preseason watch list for the Unitas Golden Arm Award. The trophy is given to the nation’s top upperclassmen quarterback. The Beavs first game is next Sunday, September 3rd.

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix is also on the Unitas watchlist. The Ducks wrapped Fall camp yesterday. The team will have a day off today, and then resume game week practices starting tomorrow. Oregon’s season opener is next Saturday, September 2nd. 

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed Defensive End Jordan Ferguson and waived running back Bryant Koback. Ferguson is back in camp to shore up the D line…while Koback is injured and didn’t play in the Seahawks game last Saturday. The final preseason tune-up is Saturday in Green Bay.

Reports suggest the San Francisco 49ers have named Sam Darnold their backup QB to starter Brock Purdy. That means the 9ers could be looking at trading former number three overall pick Trey Lance who missed most of last season with an ankle injury.  San Francisco’s final preseason game is tomorrow night against the Chargers.

MLB:

Seattle lost  5 to 4 in 10 innings to Chicago last night, snapping the eight game win streak. The Ms finish their road trip going 8 and 2, staying a half game behind Houston for both the 2nd wild card spot and 2nd place in the AL West. The Mariners are back at T-Mobile Park tomorrow to take on the Royals.

The Giants scored three runs in the 10th to get past Philadelphia 8 to 6 yesterday. The win has them tied with Arizona and Cincinnati for the third spot in the Wild Card, and a tie with the Diamondbacks in the NL West. They're off today and back in SF tomorrow to host Atlanta for the weekend.

 

OSU's Gould All-American, Mariners' 8th Win In A Row

College Football: 

Oregon State wide receiver and punt returner Anthony Gould has been selected as a preseason First-Team All-American by The Sporting News, making the squad as a return specialist. ...Multiple reports say DJ Uiagalelei will be the Beavs starting quarterback. The transfer started 28 times in his three years at Clemson.

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix has a new billboard for his Heisman Trophy campaign. This one is up on a building in Dallas, TX.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks could have linebacker Jordyn Brooks back by week 1. He returned to practice yesterday. Safety Jamal Adams is also getting healthier and could return to the practice field soon. Coach Pete Carrol briefed the press yesterday that the veteran defensive players are making progress. Seattle’s final preseason game is Saturday against Green Bay.

MLB:

The Mariners topped Chicago 6 to 3 last night, running the win streak to 8…staying a half game behind Houston for both the 2nd wild card spot and 2nd place in the AL West. Seattle goes for the sweep of the White Sox  today starting at 11:10.

The Giants gave up two runs in the 9th, losing 4 to 3 to Philadelphia yesterday. San Francisco dropped a half game behind Arizona for the third spot in the Wild Card…and third in the NL West. The series against the Phillies finishes today at 1:05.

Timbers Fire Savarese, Ducks Preview Airs Tonight, Ms Stay Hot

College Football: 

OSU Coach Jonathon Smith met with the media yesterday telling the reporters he mostly liked what he saw from the Beavers Saturday scrimmage. Smith said this week will have a transition from training camp activities to game week preparations.

Meanwhile…Oregon State and Washington State are waiting on Stanford to make a move…somewhere. That is the state of the latest Pac 12 news.

In Eugene, The Ducks began morning practices yesterday to get into the regular season routine. Programming note: Tonight – The Oregon Football Preseason Special starts at 7:00 on KBND. The Coaches Show will air each Wednesday through the season…beginning next week.

Kick off is less than 2 weeks away.

College Basketball: Oregon State is bringing assistant coach Stephen Thompson back to the bench. Thompson was part of Head Coach Wayne Tinkle’s staff from 2014 to the 2021-2022.

NBA: The Portland Trail Blazers signed point guard Ashton Hagans to a one year contract and Center Moses Brown to one year deal. The players are expected to compete for one of the final roster spots when training camp opens in October. 

MLB:

The Giants lost 10 to 4 in Philadelphia yesterday. San Francisco dropped to 3rd behind the Cubs in the Wild Card…and are three games behind the Phillies after the loss. First pitch for Game 2 is at 3:40

Seattle breezed to win number 70 blowing out Chicago 14 to 2 last night. The Ms, winners of 7 in a row, are a half game behind Houston for both the 2nd wild card spot and 2nd place in the AL West. Mariners vs White Sox game two today starts at 5:10.

Soccer:

The Portland Timbers have fired head coach Giovanni Savarese. The club announced yesterday Assistant coach Miles Joseph is interim head coach for the rest of this season. Savarese served six seasons as head coach that included two MLS Cup appearances and the MLS is Back championship. The Timbers missed the playoffs last season and are currently 12th in the Western Conference out of a playoff spot with 10 games remaining.

Ducks FB Scrimmage, Mariners Red Hot, Thorns Win

College Football: Oregon held a scrimmage Saturday where coach Dan Lanning said learning about depth charts is a take away from the session. The Ducks begin morning practices today to get into the regular season routine. Programming note: Tomorrow night – Oregon Football Preseason Special, from  7:00 – 8:00 PM on KBND.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks played their starters in limited action Saturday against Dallas. Coach Pete Carrol said he liked what he saw from the first team. Quarterback Drew Lock also played well when he took over for Geno Smith in the second quarter. Seattle closes out the preseason Saturday against Green Bay.

The 49ers preseason game Saturday saw former OSU Quarterback Jack Colletto catch an 11 yard touchdown pass in San Francisco’s game against Denver. The undrafted rookie is trying to make the team at fullback. 

MLB:

The Mariners swept Houston this weekend after hanging on for a 7 to 6 win yesterday. Julio Rodriguez only went 1 for 4. He has had 18 hits in his last 5 games. His 17 hits in 4 games had not been done since 1901. Seattle has won 6 in a row and 14 of their last 17. The Ms are a half game behind Houston for 2nd place, and 3 behind Texas in the AL West. They have a half game lead in the last wild card spot. Mariners vs White Sox starts today. First pitch from Chicago is at 5:10.

The Giants beat Atlanta yesterday on a go ahead run in the 9th to win 4 to 3, avoiding the series sweep. They’ll see the Braves again this weekend. San Francisco has a half game lead on the Cubs for 2nd in the Wild Card. They’re 2 and a half behind the Phillies for the first wild card spot. They can make up some ground starting today in Philadelphia. Game 1 of the 3 game series starts at 3:40

Soccer:

The OSU women lost to number 19 Santa Clara yesterday.

The Portland Thorns got back into the NWSL season last night against North Carolina. The Thorns’ Sophia Smith came on in the 2nd half to score what would be the match winner. The Thorns 2 to 1 win moved them ahead of North Carolina for first place in the NWSL standings.

The Portland Timbers had a rough return to MLS Play in Houston last night, getting blown out 5 nil. They were down 3, in the first 14 minutes. The Timbers are trying to climb back into the Western Conference playoff race but their 10th loss of the season didn’t help.

Another Awards Watchlist for OSU RB Martinez, Blazers Open Season Vs Clippers

College Football: 

Oregon State sophomore running back Damien Martinez added to his preseason honors Thursday being named to the watch list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, given to the top offensive player with ties to the state of Texas. This is the third preseason watchlist for Martinez. Three Ducks and Three Beavers also made the Polynesian player of the year watchlist.

NBA:

The Portland Trail Blazers will begin their 2023-24 regular season in Los Angeles against the Clippers on Wednesday, Oct. 25 before their home opener against Orlando on Friday, Oct. 27th. The Trail Blazers will play four of the first five games of the season on the road.  New to the NBA this season is the Inaugural In-Season Tournament which will tip off on Friday, Nov. 3 with the Championship on Saturday Dec. 9

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks play Dallas tomorrow night in preseason game 2. Coach Pete Carrol briefed reporters during yesterday’s media session that Rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon is still out with a hamstring injury, also last week’s stand out running back Bryant Koback won’t play and hasn’t practiced all week with a sprain. Carrol didn’t say whether starters would play in this 2nd to last preseason game. Kick off against the Cowboys is tomorrow night at 7 PM from Lumen Field.

MLB:

The Mariners beat Kansas City 6 to 4 yesterday behind another big game from Julio Rodriguez. He went 5 for 5 with five RBI and including a clutch home run. J-Rod has had 9 hits in the last two games helping the Mariners earn their sixth straight road series win. Seattle is now a half game behind Toronto for the last Wildcard spot. The Ms have a huge series in Houston this weekend. First pitch against the Astros is at 5:10.

The Giants are in Atlanta to take on Baseball’s best team for a weekend series starting today at 4:20. San Francisco is a game and a half up on the Cubs for 2nd in the Wild Card.

Soccer: 

The OSU Women shut out San Francisco 1 to nothing in their first game of the season…The Oregon Women began the season against Baylor last night. The Ducks were shut out by the Bears 2 Nothing. 

The 2nd place Portland Thorns’ return to NWSL play Sunday against first place North Carolina starting at 7:30

The Portland Timbers return to MLS Play att Houston on Sunday at 5:30. The Timbers are trying to climb back into the Western Conference playoff race.

Local:

Mt Bachelor Gravity Race Series is today, the downhill mountain bike series goes to the end of the month. 

Report-Oregon State Looks To Rebuild Pac 12, OSU & UO Women's Soccer Openers,

College Football: 

The Oregonian reports Oregon State is working on rebuilding the Pac 12. Athletic Director Scott Barnes tells the media outlet keeping California and Stanford in the conference is the main priority. Those two universities along with Washington State would join OSU in inviting more schools to the conference. The AD says the timeline is urgent and the hope is to have something started within the next week. There is also a report that Stanford could jump to the Big 10 or the ACC.

Oregon Quarterback Bo Nix has his own giant poster on a building in New York City just like Joey Harrington did during his Heisman Trophy Campaign over 20 years ago. The Ducks are off today but have practice tomorrow and a scrimmage Saturday.

Soccer: The Oregon Women begin the season hosting Baylor today at 5. The OSU Women play San Francisco today at 6

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks activated linebacker Jordyn Brooks off the physically unable to perform list Tuesday after he passed his physical. Brooks tore his ACL and had surgery in January. He says he wants to play week one. The Seahawks practice yesterday was the last one open to fans.

MLB:

The Giants lost 6 to 1 to Tampa last night. San Francisco maintains a game and a half lead over Chicago for the second spot in the Wild Card. They’re 10 games behind the Dodgers in 2nd place in the West. The Dodgers are red hot with 10 wins in a row. The Giants lost the series to Tampa…Now it’s on to Atlanta to take on Baseball’s best team for a weekend series starting tomorrow.

Beavs Fuaga On Lombardi Watchlist, Ducks Vball Top 10, Lillard New Album-Still A Blazer

College Football: 

Oregon State offensive lineman Taliese Fuaga is on the watch list for the 2023 Lombardi Award, for the nation's best offensive or defensive lineman.

Volleyball:

Oregon is Number 9 on the AVCA Top 25 preseason poll. The volleyball coaches have Stanford, Washington State, and USC also ranked. The Ducks open their season next Friday the 25th at a tournament in Hawaii.

Basketball:

Oregon head women's basketball coach Kelly Graves has announced the Ducks' 2023-24 non conference schedule, which officially begins with the season opener against Northern Arizona on November 6th at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks will play four non conference teams that were in last year’s NCAA Tournament


Two NBA insiders have separately said in the past few days that the Trail Blazers are not in active trade talks with the Miami Heat or any other team about moving Damian Lillard. Dame requested a trade from Portland six weeks ago. Reports say Lillard’s agent told teams that Miami was the only team the guard would play for, prompting a warning from the league about trade manipulation. Meanwhile Dame D.O.L.L.A has a new rap album, Don D.O.L.L.A coming out tomorrow. …In other Blazers’ news, 3rd overall draft selection Scoot Henderson made a bold prediction on a podcast recently saying he would be this season’s Rookie of The Year. Henderson has the third best odds to win the R.O.Y behind San Antonio’s Victor Wembenyama and Chet Holmgren from OKC.

MLB:

The Mariners gave up a 7 run lead and Kansas City took them to 10 innings but the Ms pulled out a 10 to 8 win last night. Seattle remains two games behind Toronto for the last Wildcard spot. Game three of the four game series against the Royals is today at 5:10.

The Giants shut out Tampa 7-0 last night. Former Beaver Wade Meckler went two for four and scored a run in his second big league game. San Francisco maintains a game and a half lead over Miami for the second spot in the Wild Card. The series against the Rays wraps today with the rubber match. First pitch from Oracle Park is at 12:45.

Ducks DE Dorlus Up For Bednarik Award, Preseason Rankings - UO No. 15, OSU No. 18

College Football:
The Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll was released. Oregon is ranked 15th and Oregon State is 18th. It’s the same positions the Ducks and Beavers have for the Coaches’ poll. USC is the highest ranked Pac 12 team at number 6. Washington is 10th. Utah is 14th. For OSU it’s their highest preseason AP ranking since 2001. The U of O is ranked inside the top 15 for the sixth straight season.
Oregon defensive end Brandon Dorlus was named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award on Monday. Dorlus was announced for the Nagurski award last week. Both honor the outstanding defensive player in college football.
NFL:
The Seattle Seahawks return to practice today after yesterday’s off day. Running back Kenneth Walker III is expected to be in practice today after recovering from a groin strain.
MLB:
The Giants lost 10 to 2 to Tampa last night. San Francisco now has only a half game lead over Miami for the second spot in the Wild Card, and they fall nine games behind the first place Dodgers who have won 9 of 10 while S F has lost 7 of 10. Julio Rodríguez accounted for five of the runs with 4 RBI on 2 hits and he scored a run. The Ms remain 2 games behind Toronto for the last Wildcard spot. OSU-'preserving Pac 12', Seahawks RB Walker Back At Camp

College Football:

Oregon State president Jayathi Murthy released a statement Friday addressed to OSU community members saying the university ‘continues to believe that preserving the Pac-12 is in the best interests of OSU student-athletes and the remaining universities, and so we are doing everything in our control to stabilize and rebuild the conference.’

The statement went on to say updates would be provided.

An Oregon legislator told KBND News this weekend of the concern over the financial implication the conference split has for Oregon State.

Meanwhile it seems the most likely scenario is for merging the Mountain West conference…schools like Boise State and UNLV with the four remaining in the Pac 12 as the vote to add Stanford and Cal to the ACC is apparently not there. There is also a longer shot for the Pac 12 to combine with the American Athletic Conference…that includes Alabama Birmingham and South Florida, and several Texas teams. 

The 2023 season is 3 weeks away for the Ducks and Beavers, both squads held scrimmages over the weekend. 

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III, who has been out since early in camp with a groin injury returned to practice Saturday, bringing positive news to the team that is feeling good about the running back situation early in camp. The Seahawks are off today and resume training camp tomorrow preparing for Dallas coming to Lumen Field Saturday night. 

MLB:

The Mariners lost their 6 series win streak, falling 5 to 3 to Baltimore in 10 innings yesterday. They’re a game and half out of a wild card spot behind Toronto. Next Seattle is in Kansas City tor a series against the Royals starti today at 5:10.

The Giants are 8 and a half games behind the Dodgers now after winning 3 to 2 yesterday to avoid the sweep by the Rangers. San Francisco continues to scuffle losing 6 of their last 10 but are still in 2nd in the wildcard by a game and a half, eight games above .500 at 63 and 55. Inter-league play continues…Tampa is at Oracle Park tonight. The Rays are 2nd in the  AL East. First pitch is at 6:45.

Ducks, Beavers Football Awards Watchlists, Haulin' Aspen Tomorrow

College Football:

Oregon linebacker Jestin Jacobs is on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, given to the nation’s top linebacker. Running backs Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington have been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list for the top RB. There are 13 Ducks on preseason awards watch lists.

Oregon State sophomore Damien Martinez has been named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award. Martinez is also in the running for the Maxwell Award. 6 other Beavers are on awards watchlists.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks opened their exhibition season against Minnesota last night. Drew Lock, trying to earn the back up QB spot threw for 191 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Rookie Running Backs Zach Charbonnet and Bryant Koback had strong opening performances. The Seattle Defense played well, allowing only 248 total yards in the 24 to 13 win.

Cade Johnson is reportedly in stable condition at a Seattle hospital, after leaving the game on a stretcher.

MLB:

The Giants are six and a half games behind the Dodgers now and are in 2nd in the wildcard, nine games above .500 at 62 and 53. They're back in San Francisco tonight to take on the AL West leading Rangers. First pitch is at 7:10

The Mariners are riding a 7 game win streak, and have won nine of their last 10. They’re also 10 games above .500 at 62 and 52. They’re 2 games out of a wild card spot, and three games behind the Astros for 2nd place in the West. Next Seattle hosts a huge series against Adley Rutschman and the East Leading Baltimore Orioles starting tonight at 7:10.

Mt Bachelor Gravity Race Series is Friday, the downhill mountain bike series goes to the end of August. 

The Haulin’ Aspen Full marathon, Half Marathon, and 6 and half mile trail race is Saturday at Wanoga Sno Park. Watch for race traffic on the trails, and busier activity up Century Drive.

College Football:

The Mountain West is taking a look at Oregon State and Washington State becoming members. The officials of the 12 member conference didn’t give a timetable for a decision. 

The ACC schools have not voted to add Stanford and Cal. The presidents chose not to decide last night. Media outlets stated not all the schools are on board with bringing in the Northern California schools. Another report says Stanford is determined to stay in a Power Five conference.

Even with the conference uncertainty, recruiting season continues…

Crook County Wide Receiver Eddie Freauff announced his commitment to Oregon State this week. The 6’4” 3-star prospect is the 13th commitment to the Beavers 2024 class.

The Ducks flipped a commitment on Monday from a cornerback out of Southern California who had committed to USC. Reportedly one of the reasons USC didn’t want Oregon to get into the Big 10 with the Trojans was to keep the Ducks from recruiting in SoCal.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks have their first preseason game tonight hosting Minnesota. Rookie Devon Witherspoon won’t be in the line-up. The cornerback continues to deal with a sore hamstring, ‘same leg, different spot’ according to coach Pete Carrol. On the other side of the ball…Several running backs are expected to see action. Kickoff against the Vikings from Lumen Field is at 7 tonight.

College Football:

The latest on Conference realignment: The ACC is looking at adding Cal and Stanford…The Mountain West is considering Oregon State and Washington State.

Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith told media yesterday he wasn’t sure if the Beavers would continue their rivalry games with the Ducks…also players were following the drama of the conference upheaval but mostly focused on what’s happening at camp.

At Oregon Camp, Olympic Sprinter and NCAA Champion Micah Williams is trying to make the Ducks receiving corps. Williams hasn’t played football since his freshman year of high school but as Coach Dan Lanning told the media yesterday ‘you can’t coach fast’. 

College Basketball: The OSU Men will play against Baylor November 22nd in the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. The Beavers were previously announced as part of the 4 team tournament in May. Now we know they’ll play the Bears first, and then either Florida or Pittsburgh.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks have their first preseason game tomorrow. They will likely give a lot of time to QB Drew Lock who is trying to be the backup to Geno Smith after competing for the starting spot with him last season. The Seahawks continue to see running backs get banged up with rookie Kenny McIntosh spraining his knee Friday, He could still be back for the start of the season. Yesterday rookie defensive back Devon Witherspoon sat out practice with a wrap on his leg. Coach Pete Carrol didn’t talk to the media but is scheduled to today, and may give an update who will play tomorrow when they host Minnesota.

MLB:

The Mariners shutout San Diego two to nothing. The Ms have a six game win streak. The series against the Padres finishes tonight. First pitch is at 6:40.

San Francisco lost 7 to 5 to Anaheim. The Giants are four and a half games behind the Dodgers and still first place in the wildcard. They play the Angels again tonight at 6:38

The Bend North Little League Softball team lost 9 to 5 in 8 innings to Milan, Italy yesterday in an elimination game at the Little League World Series. The Bend team sent the game to extra innings but couldn’t complete the comeback. It was a memorable season for the softball squad and the entire state was rooting for them.

The first preseason USA TODAY- Sports Top 25 Coaches Poll was released yesterday. Oregon comes in at number 15… Oregon State is ranked 18th…Utah is 14th, Washington is 11th and USC is the highest rated Pac 12 team at 6th.

The latest on conference realignment is the Big 12 is not interested in adding Oregon State or Washington State. The ACC could take a look at bringing on Cal and Stanford.

2023 Watchlist Award announcements for Ducks and Beavers include Oregon wide receivers Troy Franklin and Tez Johnson werenamed to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s most outstanding receiver. Trikweze [TRY-kwez]  Bridges was named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy for community service… and wide receiver Kris Hutson for the Paul Hornung Award… Oregon State wide receiver and punt returner Anthony Gould has also been named to the Hornung Award watch list for most versatile player, and defensive back Akili Arnold has been selected to the Wuerrfel Trophy watch list.

MLB:

San Francisco beat Anaheim 8 to 3 scoring 6 runs in the 9th to come back to beat the Angels. The Giants are 4 games behind the Dodgers and first place in the wildcard. Game 2 against Angels is tonight at 6:38.

The Mariners are back in Seattle for a two game meeting with San Diego. The Ms have a five game win streak and eight of their last ten. First pitch is at 6:40 tonight against the Padres.

Local:

The Bend North Little League Softball team lost to Puerto 4 to 2 yesterday at the Little League World Series in Greenville, North Carolina. Bend plays MIlano, Italy at 1 this afternoon in an elimination game.

 

Elks Season Ends, Pac 12 (4) latest, Thorns Draw

College Football:

The fallout from 5 schools announcing Friday they intend to leave the Pac 12 after this season continues as speculation heats up on what conference the four remaining teams will be playing in. There is the possibility of merging with the Mountain West which includes Boise State, Nevada, and San Diego State. The Big 12 could be a possibility for Oregon State if that conference wants to continue expansion west after taking in Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State Friday… OSU and the other three remaining schools, Washington State, Stanford, and Cal are expected to make some kind of decision soon.  The Pac 12 television deal not being supported by Washington and Oregon is what led to the conference exodus, according to Arizona State’s president, Michael Crow. 

The University of Oregon released a statement Friday saying its teams would still compete against Oregon State. Likewise, the University of Washington said its teams would still play Washington State. Both the Ducks and Huskies will be in the Big 10 conference starting in the 2024 season.

MLB:

The Mariners beat the Angels 3 to 2 in 10 innings yesterday to get the sweep…and win number 60 on the season. It’s also a five game win streak and eight of their last ten. It puts them two and half behind Toronto in the last AL wildcard spot and six games behind Texas in the West. The Ms are off today and back in Seattle tomorrow for a two game meeting with San Diego  [First pitch is at 6:40.]

San Francisco lost 8 to 6 to Oakland yesterday, dropping both of the Bay Bridge series games to the As. The Giants are three and a half games behind the Dodgers and tied with the Phillies for first in the wild card.

Soccer: 

The Portland Thorns played a scoreless draw with O-L Reign yesterday in the final match of the group stage of the NWSL Challenge Cup. The Thorns will not advance to the next round. The Thorns are in 2nd in the NWSL regular seasonwith their next match August 20th against first place North Carolina.

The Portland Timbers lost to Monterey Friday night, knocking them out of the League’s Cup. The Timbers return to MLS Play August 20th against Houston.

Local:

The Elks allowed 4 runs in the 9th and Cowlitz won 7 to 6 yesterday. The Elks end the season at 25 and 29…5th place in the South Division.

Pac 12 Upheaval, OSU Football Fall Camp, Elks Win Series

College Football:

Oregon and Washington were approved by Big 10 schools’ leaders to have conference officials explore expanding with the Pacific Northwest schools. The Ducks and Huskies have been mentioned joining the Wolverines and Buckeyes in the same conference for over a year. Now that seems closer to reality. The time has come for more upheaval within the conference of champions. Oregon State and Washington State could move to the Mountain West in another scenario if the Pac-However many can’t stay cohesive enough. Arizona, Arizona State and Utah could also leave the conference. 

All of that is at least a season away though…

Oregon State opened camp yesterday with high expectations after a 10 win season and bowl victory last year. They will lean on their running game and have a quarterback battle in camp with transfer D J Uiagalelei and Ben Gulbranson.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks had some good news at camp yesterday…Running back Zach Charbonnet returned to practice after sitting out with a sore shoulder. Running Back Kenneth Walker is still sidelined with a groin injury. Seattle’s first preseason game is next Thursday.

MLB:

San Francisco shut out the Diamondbacks 1 to Zip yesterday to get the 4 game series win. A solo shot from Lamonte Wade Jr was all they needed. The Giants have won 7 of their last 10 and are 2 and half games behind the Dodgers, with a game and half lead in the Wildcard. It’s a 2 game series against the As in Oakland tomorrow afternoon. 

The Mariners beat the Angels 5 to 3 last night surviving a dominant performance from Shohei Ohtani who left with hand tightness after pitching 4 scoreless innings. He also hit his 40th home run. Seattle has a game and a half lead on the Halos. They’re back at it today in Anaheim. First pitch is at 6:38.

Soccer: 

The Portland Timbers take on Monterey tonight at 7 in the round of 32 knock-out stage of the League’s Cup. 

Local:

The Elks took down the Drifters 10 to 2 last night, breaking the game open with a 6-run 3rd inning. Bend wins the series and heads to Cowlitz tonight for a weekend series with the second place Black Bears who have won 9 in a row. First pitch from Story field is 6:35 tonight.

OSU Football Fall Camp, Beavs' Awards Watchlists, Elks End Homestand Tonight

College Football:

Oregon State camp begins today. Beavers on national awards watchlists include running back Damien Martinez on the Maxwell list for most outstanding player… Defensive back Kitan Oladapo is up for the Nagurski award for best defensive player. Offensive linemen Joshua Gray and Taliese Fuaga have been named to the Outland Trophy list for best interior lineman. OSU’s season kicks off September 3rd at San Jose State

Yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon Oregon opened camp. Second year coach Dan Lanning said they have a lot to work on with the experienced players needing to help the true Freshman and transfers. The Ducks open the season September 2nd against Portland State.

MLB:

San Francisco rallied to beat the Diamondbacks 4 to 2 last night with JD Davis hitting a 2 run double, and scoring a run. Win number 60 of the season puts the 2nd place Giants two games behind L-A and stretches the lead to 3 over Arizona. They have a one game lead in the NL Wild card. S F will go for the series win today. First pitch for game 4 is at 12:45

Eugenio Saurez stayed hot, going 3 for 4, knocking in one, and scoring a run… Seattle is a half game ahead of the Angels for third in the AL West. The Ms are in Anaheim for a series starting tonight. Bryan Woo is on the mound for the Mariners against Shohei Ohtani. First pitch is at 6:35.

Soccer: 

The Portland Timbers acquired Antony, a Brazilian winger at the opening of the international transfer window. He scored 8 goals in 63 appearances for his pro team in Portugal. Portland hopes the attacker can help them get back into playoff contention in the MLS.  Next match for the Timbers is Thursday night against Monterey in the round of 32 knock-out stage of the League’s Cup.

Local:

The Elks lost 6 to 4 to Springfield last night. Bend got down early and couldn’t muster a comeback again. They’ll go for the series win tonight and try to keep their division lead over the Drifters. First pitch from Vince Genna is at 6:35.

Ducks On National Watchlists, Pac 12 on AppleTV+?

College Football:

Several reports say the Pac 12 is considering Apple TV+ as the primary home for most of the conference’s games in a new media rights deal. Terms of the contract are not known but will be difficult to estimate when they are available as viewer subscriptions will play a factor. No vote has taken place by University officials. They will meet again to discuss the offer.

Training camp starts today for the Oregon Ducks. Several players are on national awards watchlists.  Brandon Dorlus and  Evan Williams for the Nagurski Trophy for best defensive player. Joshua Conerly Jr is up for the Outland trophy, the best interior lineman, and QB Bo Nix is up for the Maxwell Award, the most outstanding player.

Oregon State camp begins tomorrow. I’ll run down the Beavers’ watchlist players then.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks put rookie Devon Witherspoon in with the first team defense at yesterday’s practice and the cornerback excelled in the spot, showing why the Seahawks made him the 5th overall pick … Seattle’s first preseason game is next Thursday the 10th.

MLB:

San Francisco came back to beat the Diamondbacks 4 to 3 last night. The win moves the Giants 2 and half games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, and a game ahead of Arizona. San Francisco didn’t make any major moves at the trade deadline.  First pitch tonight for game 3 of the 4 game series is at 6:45

The Mariners lost to Boston 6 to 4 last night. Eugenio Saurez hit a home run and had 3 RBI… The Game 3 rubber match is today at 1:10. 

Seattle traded for Baltimore closer Eduard Bazardo at the deadline yesterday afternoon, giving up a minor league prospect.

Soccer: 

The Portland Timbers acquired midfielder Bryan Acosta from the Colorado Rapids for cash considerations. The Timbers have advanced in the Leagues Cup. They’ll meet Monterey in the round of 32 knock-out stage this Friday.

Lanning Downplays Buffs' Departure, Ducks Legacy Verbally Commits, Elks v Springfield Starts

College Football: 

The University of Oregon media day saw football coach Dan Lanning downplay Colorado leaving the Pac 12… Prompted by a question the coach asked what the Buffaloes have won since becoming a member of the conference,  then answered the question himself saying he didn’t remember anything. Media day came ahead of the Ducks opening of fall camp tomorrow.

Oregon also received the verbal commitment of Akili Smith, Jr. for the 2025 season. The four-star quarterback is the son of Akili Smith who played for the Ducks in the late  ‘90s and was the number 3 overall pick in the 1999 Draft. Smith Jr. is a number one ranked dual-threat quarterback in his recruiting class.

NFL:

The Seattle Seahawks had their first practice in pads, with contact at training camp yesterday. Rookie Devon Witherspoon was on the field for Seattle after getting his contract done and missing the first 2 days. He has a steep learning curve as Seattle’s first preseason game is next Thursday the 10th.

MLB:

The Mariners beat Boston 6 to 2 last night, breaking the game open in the 8th with 4 runs to get the series opening win. Game 2 is tonight at 6:40. 

Seattle traded closer Paul Sewald to Arizona yesterday for 3 players. They also traded the injured AJ Pollock to the Giants for a player to be named. Today’s trading deadline is at 3 this afternoon

San Francisco lost 4 to 3 to the Diamondbacks in extra innings last night. That moves Arizona two games behind the Giants in the NL West. The Giants stay two games behind the Dodgers and in First place in the Wildcard. First pitch tonight for game 2 of the series is at 6:45

The Elks start a 3 game series against Springfield tonight. Bend is in 4th place in the South Division, 7 games back. They’re 10 and 11 in the second half of the season. 22 and 26 overall. The Drifters are in back of the Elks in the division at 9 and 14. First pitch from Vince Genna Stadium is at 6:35 tonight.
